The story goes about two brothers who sat and played dice. Again and again they threw their dice. Again and again they quarreled over who won what. Never a moment of peace did they get.
They did not even know what they were playing about, but they were always at odds with each other. After far too long the dice had rolled, one exclaimed with a voice that sounded like a thousand bells. "Brother let's stop this pointless game, nothing we get out of just throwing our dice, without goal or purpose."
The other stopped in the middle of picking up his dice again. He looked long at his 12 dice before answering his brother with his deep hoarse voice. “Right you have brother, there is no purpose to our cast and no thought is behind them. But let's change that. ”
"How do you suggest, brother, that we give this meaningless game more meaning?" Asked the first figure as he studied his two dice. “I must tell you that, my dear brother, let us fill the void. For far too long we have been alone here, it is not time for us to test how much we really can. ”
For a long time one stood and looked at the other. "How is it going to make our game more fun?" Asked the first as he rolled his two dice between his fingers.
"It's easy brother, we use our throws to control how the world behaves" His brother replied as he stacked his many dice. "If we're going to play about something as big as a world's fate, shouldn't we first shape a referee so we can not cheat?" Even such a heavy question sounded light and logical when said with such a harmonious voice. After a hesitation, the other bridge's hoarse voice sounded. "How do we ensure that this judge does not choose a side?"
For a long time, the two sat and wondered before coming up with a solution together.
"What if we give him some of our strength?" Started one "We can let him be the ultimate power in this new world." Continued the other. "Nothing shall pass by him" Begin the first again, "And no one shall escape him" Answer the second. "Even we must obey him" Sang the first one again this time up and standing ass a mysterious light began to shine from him. "For he will be the last to disappear, everything must yield to his power" exclaimed the other, while the light that radiated from his brother, veered from the shadows that flowed from him.
“A new created a mixture of light and darkness, neader good or evil, but nonetheless powerful. A third player to keep us in check ”Said the brothers together and their elements met. Out of nowhere, another man appeared.
Even though he was only seconds old, it looked like he had lived in eternity already. Unlike the two young men who had been there all along, who looked so young and beautiful, this third player looked like an old man who was near death, which was the most ironic thing one could say to him.
Before the two brothers had fallen down again, the old man had sat down at the table. "Light, darkness come and sit down, my old bones can not stand like that." He commented in a voice that sounded like a faint echo. “Self-evident death. We just need air again. ” The answer light as he sat down again.
"Hello dead, do you agree with what is going to happen?" Asked darkness. "Yes, yes, darkness, you have created me with ample knowledge of what my task is and what you have planned and I must say that this will be exciting." He replied as he called out his strange dice. Unlike the brothers' dice which all had 6 sides, the dice of death did not have a fixed number of sides, they constantly changed side number.
The light and the darkness sat for a long time staring at these strange cubes. "Brother, I think we've created the weirdest thing ever." Exclaimed light as he pointed to the dice that could not calm down. "Believe me brother I totally agree" replied the darkness that had pushed itself away from these mysterious dice.
"Glad you like them, but let's get started playing our game." comanded death quietly. "Yes let's see what we throw about first" asked the light happy.
For thousands of years, the ancient gods played their game. About them planets sprang up and life began. Again and again the players threw and again and again they laughed at the results. No more a sour mine between them, for their game had finally gained substance.
The game was not fair by any means, but the light enjoyed it. Never did he get tired of fighting the darkness, again and again he took his dice and threw again and again. Time and time again he lost and yet another planet fell into darkness. "Brother, we should change the rules a little, even I must admit that it will be boring to win again and again" saide the darkness quietly after another planet had fallen to the darkness. “No, only in the darkest darkness will one really appreciate the light. So we continue to play, at some point I will succeed in winning a game ”Answred the light stubbornly.
“Are you sure light. Even I have more dice than you have and I am only a regulator, ” comentet death.
"I'm absolutely sure" Answered the light and kissed his dice before throwing them again, to see what he had to work with on this planet. The first dice calmed down and showed a big clear 6. With restrained breathing, everyone waited anxiously for the second dice to land, hopfolly so this became a fun game or just another one of the same boring game.
* klang klang klang * ran the dice off the marble table. The cube stopped vertically between one of the symbols of darkness and the shining light on the other side.
The assembled gods curved their toes and braided their fingers so that it would land on the light. Even the darkness would wish it would land on it, finally there was a chance it would be a slightly longer game. All the other games were too short. Either the light had struck a too low number to begin with, or else the other had landed on a blank and some directly on one of the blacks.
A final sound sounded and in the middle of the table the sacred light of the cube shone brightly for all to see. "Yes yes yes finally, now you have to see brother, I'll probably win this time." exclaimed the light as he danced a victory dance.
"Congratulations finally brother a world where your strength is at its fullest from the beginning, what should they be called the enlightened races?" asked the darkness, slamming his hand against the planet they were sitting near. The light thought for a moment before waving its arms and creatures sprang forward. 6 species with two of each, a male and a female.
“The first must live in nature hidden between stems and leaves. Beautiful like no other and proud as the trees they call home, the bow must be their weapon. Death Tell me how long my first race will live and how they will die. ” Asked the light as he worked on shaping the first of his breeds, it was clear that they would be tall and beautiful, with pointed ears and sharp but beautiful features.
Death took without a word and threw with his dice. “Your race is lucky, they must live like their trees until I pick them up myself, no age should cut them down, they should only fear death at the hand of an enemy. But their death is final, there is nothing to come back for them ”Answered death while studying his dice. “I would call them elves. They must listen to nature and be prepared for change and adapt just as life itself does, but just like their trees, they must be stubborn and hold on to the old days, ”concluded the light before moving on to the next.
“The other of my creatures must dig the ground. In the depths of the planet they must find treasure and strength, hard as stone they must be built and as stubborn as a rock they will be. Nothing should break their fortresses and nothing should compare with the craftsmanship of their blacksmiths. pixaxe their tools and axe their weapons. Tell me then death how will these creatures cope without the light of the sun to warm them ”Asked the light as he shaped a creature far smaller than the first and gave them a much heavier stature. They looked like muscles on legs when they were finished shaping.
“They must live long but not forever, 5-600 years at most, their true strength lies in their toughness, even the hardest blow will not do them much, only violent illness and injury will bring them to me. As young people, they may be allowed to return a few times, but their total age can never reach over 600 years. ” Mumbled death as he picked up his dice again.
Again hesitating the light before he clapped his hands together with exclaimed. "Now I know, dwarves will be their name, in the earth they hide and shape it according to their will." Laughed the light before proceeding to the third species.
“Two good breeds so far, what do you want to do with the rest bro” asked the darkness as he studied the first two species he would have to fight.
"I come to that now my impatient brother" Answered the light as he went to the next species.
“The dwarves will not be alone underground, another even smaller species will wander among them, their worth will not be found in their strength but in their thoughts. Born with a strong sense of logic and system, they will build and invent more than any other. Their livelihood must be knowledge and through it they must survive. Their weapons will be their inventions. Bring it up, my old friend, what is your judgment on my creatures. ” Asked the light as he fiddled with this little creature.
“Their lives are short only 100 years, death will be a constant companion in their lives, but only rarely will their ingenuity betray them. Death at the hands of their own eccentric experiments will seldom be more than a good nap. They can not keep coming back, but they will not have to fear death like their neighbors, the dwarves ”the light could not help but laugh a little at the wording of death.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Gnomes I will call them, they must plan the cities of the dwarves and create fantastic tools for them, with the dwarves they must seek materials and security in exchange for technology."
“The fourth species must make the swamp their home, just as their primitive brother they must be covered with scales and had a mighty tail. The swamp and the darkness must be their friend. No one should be able to enter their country without knowing it. They must live off the soil and the plants. Even if they do not have to build big mighty cities, their home will be secured, because the earth itself will be a labyrinth that only they can navigate. Come you old man, how are you going to treat, my dear little lizards. ” Asked the light once more and as always death threw its dice.
“The life of this species becomes short but brutal. Only a few will live past the age of 40 years. Their lives will be followed by an eternal struggle with everything that also calls the swamp their home. Hope for them that they find a security and enjoyment in the fight for the only opportunity for them to get back to life is if they have lost it in battle initially. ” Finishing death and nodding to the light again.
"What do you call such a species… .. brother do you have an idea." Asked the light its other half.
“Komos could you call them” The answer calmly calmly.
"Yes, they must be called that and as death itself says, they must find their greatest pleasure in the fight against impossible odds." Once again, the light wandered on this time toward his fifth creature.
“Another race is to come, and once again I am faced with a choice. What should be their task and how should they live. ” here the light hesitated for a while.
“I have it now, out on the plains they must walk created with thick fur and a body that can withstand the wind. They must be traders and they must remember the history of the world. From place to place they must wander, always searching for the best deal and a good story. Then tell me a story, death about these creatures. ”
Again, death threw its dice, and like so many times before, they changed shape in the air.
“Their lives will last 100 years and not much more and they will be delicate, only the blades of the wind will not hurt them all other blades will quickly make them cold, but the skilled collector has nothing to fear, death is just an account to be settled . It will be expensive but life can be bought for them again. ” Answered death and laughed a little at himself, of all the thousands of possibilities there were for how that life could be given back, then the dice chose that this breed should bribe him.
"Under the moonlight they make camps and together with the wolves they must howl and wolfkin must be their name." Laughed the light as he made the female model let out a howl while the male just stood with a huge smile so all the teeth became visible.
"I must say, brother, that was a fine detail you got there." Laughed the darkness as he closely studied the wolfkin man.
"I also like it, but think death is the one who has the most fun with the outcome of them." The light answer as death sat and mumbled a little, “Have you heard bribe death for an extra life. Now I never have. ” Mumbled death quietly.
"Then you only need one race now my dear brother, what should this race be." Asked the darkness while actually starting to believe his brother had a chance this time. only rarely had his brother cast a six and his holy light, which was the only thing that made his creatures have a chance against his darkness, while the dice of death were gentle against them. Finally a good match, if he could also just get a few good throws, then this would be an exciting game.
“Yes only one left and they must be something very special. They shall dwell in the land, and by it they shall live. Their strength does not come from big muscles or an ingenious brain. Their strength comes from their endurance. Together they must lift the heavy weights of life and in this community they must find the strength to fight the darkness. Cities they must build and arm for them to survive, not under rocks and not in the air they must hide. No creature should be as flexible as those. As the water allways finds its way, just so they must always find a solution in the end.
No matter how the dice of death roll they will fight on, nothing should stop this creatures, they may be weak, but they never stop fighting. Then roll your dice old man and let's see what they are up against, because only you are an enemy they will never seriously defeat. ” Exclaimed the light with a voice filled with a mysterious force as he talked about this creature.
“Surely I tell you light, there is something about this creature that scares me, their life is like wolfkin in small hundred years, but that ends the simple too. Their death dice are mysterious, never before has it chosen to show two things at once, everything from a simple cold to an unfortunate cut with a knife will be able to kill them, but at the same time they will be able to survive the most extreme damage.
Their innate stubbornness means that they will be able to continue even after losing one leg and both arms. Darkness beware, for if one of these creatures sets himself for it, he will be harder to kill than even the strongest of the strongest of yours. But they also need this stubbornness and perseverance, for there is no other chance for them. They have a life and can have no more than one. What light would you call such an unbalanced creature. ” Asked death as he stared at his 3 dice.
“I know what they're called. humens must be their name and their will must be their greatest weapon, for nothing will keep them down in the long run. ” Laughed light before sitting back at the table they threw dice at.
"You have certainly gotten the most out of that light, but now it's my turn to roll my dice." Laughed the darkness and got ready to throw.
To the table ran all twelve dice, and ended in two beautiful rows. At the point it went from perhaps being an exciting game, to being the most nerve-wracking game imaginable, six dice that all showed the number six. Meant that all the creatures of darkness would have their overlords with them, which would make it almost impossible to overcome them, and at the same time the six basic elements were represented evenly distributed between them.
Death just sat staring at the dice before saying in a voice even colder than usual. "Really hope your races are as strong as you make them sound, because what you have in front of you is a true nightmare."
The light sat for a while shaking its head. "I can see that, sure he did not cheat?" Asked the light but just got a dead look from death.
"Okay I thought so, but I have confidence in my creatures, they will probably find a way through this darkness" Said the light as he leaned back in the chair. "Let us begin immediately," he exclaimed, just as darkness was about to place its overlords, in the world.
"Yes yes we should, but first let me just enjoy having all 6 basic types of magic distributed among my leaders" replied the darkness while enjoying the sight. It may well be the light has been lucky, but here stood the darkness now, with six overlords with almost perfect control over fire, water, earth, air, poison or pure energy.
"With the first round of throws, I will now declare the game started, let's start the actual game, take a standard dice each and let's see who is allowed to choose the starting place first for one of their creatures" begin death and the brothers immediately took their seats at the table again.
After a long time of planning and rolling the dice, the gods got their creatures distributed. Far to the north far up in the ice, a demon builds its home between all the beautiful ice crystals. Deep inside a dormant volcano far to the south, a fire creature hides its castle. Deep in the ocean, a octopus lays its eggs and summons monsters from the darkest depths of the ocean. In the eternal storm out in the middle of a giant desert, a formless wind slides round ready to tear everything that crosses its desert into smashes. In the deepest parts of a swamp, a lump of slime slides around, killing all that lives. Far below the ground, a giant hides and tries to sleep.
Between all these giants the creatures of light are distributed, along the edge of the desert the wolfkin is distributed, the komos find themselves in the swamp to the east despite the dangers to be found there. The dwarves and gnomes go underground by the mountains to the north, and the humens themselves grow their forest south of the desert, the people settle down along the west and east coasts. the sea is no bigger than human ships can cross it reasonably easily if they can avoid the monster from the depths.
"And that my children are is the story of the two brothers who started it all" Told the old man with a lot of pride in his voice. He always enjoyed telling this story, children were always so fascinated by it.
"What stories are you telling now" sounded it loud from the door.
Hi Dave, it's not just stories, it's the story of how our world has been shaped. you used to love the story of the brothers. ” Exclaimed the old man, as he got to work himself free of all the children he had sitting on him.
"Yes I did and then I grew up and realized that the world is not a sweet little story, but an evil and horrible place." answer Dave cold. “You are not an adult, yet, what are you now 15 years old? Just because your father died in the war and your mother disappeared, you do not have to shut down completely and get cold to everything and everyone. ” Exclaimed the old man.
“No I know, but I just do not see the big reason to keep insisting that the world is as pink as you usually color it in your stories. And I'm an adult, I can join the army and I can get a job and a girl if that's what I want, ”Dave interjected, but the old man just laughed.
“Yes you may be able to enlist in the army, but we both know you do not, you can not stand accepting orders, and how should an orphaned street boy get a proper job or a girl? If you want to become something, you have to find a way and rise in the social ranks. ” Answered the old man.
"You can easily say that, but how could a boring 1. like me get higher up the ladder than that?" Dave asked angrily as he stared into the air.
"You could learn to take orders, and try to get into the army, then it could be that you could get enough friends there in higher circles that they would be able to help you." Answer the oldman.
"So rather be a 1, for the rest of my days" Dave replied angrily before going his way.
“It's hard to have fallen from a rank 6 as a noble son and heir to a fortune, to a poor zero and nothing down here with us after all. Can understand you ”muttered the old man, but Dave still heard him.
"Yes, you should just know old man, but wait, I'm finding my way back, I promised myself." Mumbled Dave before disappearing into the crowd of people in the market.
