A New World 1.1

A truck hit me. Pretty generic I know. I was a Japanese teenager just crossing the street. Of course I was gonna be hit by a truck. We all knew how these stories went. So maybe I should describe my harem in another world, the busty goddess that greeted me in another land or should I mention the flying sea turtles? I don't really remember everything, it's all been a blur since I was told to defeat the Demon King. Along the way I had help from spear wielding maniacs, brawling healers, and all sorts of other fantastical creatures. Just kidding. You really thought I was gonna be handed anything? That I was gonna be given any amount of respect by my peers? I'm spending everyday washing and cleaning laundry and my only system is broken. I can't level up, my class is shattered, and all the clothes I was assigned to clean today still stink.

"Status: Report'' I said every syllable as slowly as possible. If I messed up I would wake up tomorrow with a killer headache. It kept happening without fail, last time I didn't black out. I was making progress.

Ever since I came here I was constantly buggered by the system, pop-up messages, alerts, and other strange noises would play randomly at times. The frequency of these occurrences went down thankfully but I was still scarred from it happening all the time. I looked back down at the tub of clothes I was scrubbing. I still had much more work to do before my day was done. When I was dropped here I had nothing on me, and with a broken system the Protection Guild had basically just sent me to the bath houses as a common helper. I already had a sunburn from yesterday's work. And my back was hurting from scrubbing all day long.

"You're gonna be defeated by those knickers, Mr. Adventurer?"

Sherrel walked up to me with a smirk on her face. I turned to look at her "No, not today, but I'm still thinking about my situation" she furrowed her brows and crossed her arms. She and I were arguing for the last few days on what to do about my situation.

"You can still take my brother's apprenticeship offer..."

"But I don't want to be locked down gutting fish for the next 5 years"

She scowled and then hesitated for a second

"Yui, I don't know what to say, you have no class, no skills, and you were found with no family or relatives, it's obvious that you don't have no one to rely on, you need to take the first chance you get"

I couldn't fault her for thinking that, but I was a reincarnated person from another world. I wouldn't waste this chance unless a God would just magically pluck my soul as it was running its course down the river of samsara and throw it somewhere else again.

This world had a system and supernatural powers. I saw it on my first day when one of the adventurers shot a white wave of energy from their hammer. The implications weren't lost on me and I wasn't going to spend the rest of my life toiling away in obscurity. Although I'm not ignorant either. I was flat broke and my jeans and black t-shirt would be caked in dirt if it wasn't for being assigned cleaning duty.

"Sherrel, I'll take your brothers offer bu-"

"No buts!" She got down and looked at me, our eyes level. She lowered her voice "You can't go off and be some bigwig adventurer Yui. You'll get yourself killed doing that" she turned her head away from me for a second and then looked back; Teardrops were gathering at her eyes, but they never fell "I- I can't let it happen again" I grabbed her shoulders "I promise you" I got back up and hugged her.

'I really am a massive piece of shit' I didn't want to purposefully lie to Sherrel, but seeing her like that freaked me out. I was currently standing outside the city I spawned in, massive stone walls encircling the entire place. I had a sharpened stick in my hand. The hope was to kite some mob from outside the forest. I overheard some newer adventurers talking about lower level mobs while they were taking a dip in the bath house. My system was currently unresponsive and the message 'CHILD LOCK' wasn't lost on me. I was hoping it was more of a matter of combat than time.

I kept walking down the treeline. I didn't want to accidentally aggro some high leveled mob I couldn't handle. I still remember the red-skinned troll that nearly killed me on the first day here. It was faster, bigger, and had a giant wooden club. I was taking my time; the hope was to stumble onto an encampment of hobs, small white goblin like creatures that netted a good amount of experience. I kept to the straight and narrow path, always keeping a distance of at least 2 meters from all the nearby shrubbery. It was around midday and I was hoping to get back to Sherrel's house by nightfall.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

Around 30 minutes later it happened. I had found a small encampment of hobs stationed farther into the forest. I know that I told myself that I wandered that far in, but I was getting desperate. I saw the first signs when I saw the smoke and small light from their campfire. There were 3 of them in total. Two were sleeping and the other one was slowly tending to the fire. The Hobs themselves were very similar to Goblins; except they were white and had two tiny stubby horns on either side of their head. I slowly lowered myself into some nearby bushes and then began to watch them while staying silent. The Hob that had stayed awake was currently facing away from me. The first bit of luck that I've had in the last couple of days.

The best plan I had in my head was to rush out and kill the one Hob that was still awake. It had sharp claws and although I couldn't see them, I would guess that its teeth were even sharper. I slowly circled around keeping my eyes sharp on the back of the Hob. That was my worst mistake. While my eyes were focused on the Hobs back my feet planted firmly on a small heap of sticks. I quickly shot out and lunged before the Hob could prepare himself. I tumbled and fell right on top of it. Its black beady eyes stared at me with a mixture of hatred and fear, I grabbed my sharpened stick and tried to stab it into its neck. It didn't sink in that far and it began flailing and clawing at my thighs and stomach, I quickly jumped off and began kicking it in the head. Right as I was about to turn around I felt a heavy object slam into my back. One of the other Hobs must have awoken, I felt it climb up my back while it's claws drew shallow marks. I slammed my back straight into the ground and felt the Hob break underneath me, just as I was about to stand up I felt the final hob jump up onto my chest. I felt their claws scrape all against my body. My entire world was in pain. I quickly tried to open my system. Various Characters flashed across my eyes

My head blasted into pain, I could barely see through the haze of red that my head had turned into. I heard sounds and metallic screeching noises all around me. "MAKE IT STOP" I screamed out while flailing my arms. The Hob that was on top of my stomach had grabbed my spear and was about to stab me. I felt something give within the system. The sounds stopped, and the world fell eerily silent for a second. Both Goblins screamed out and grabbed their heads. They both stayed like that for a few more seconds. I quickly crawled away and grabbed my spear. I then slammed the haft of the spear into the Hob still standing up. His stomach exploded out and his throat let out a wet gurgle. The Hob that was still on the ground was completely helpless against me and died shortly thereafter.

I quickly fell back down on the ground and felt my body tingle with adrenaline. I felt the experience inside me. It just wouldn't do anything. I slowly felt the energy diminish and some of my more severe wounds began to heal rapidly. I still had slight bleeding and tiny cuts on my stomach, but I felt much better afterwards. My breathing was still quite heavy for a while, but I started packing up and decided for a quick exit. I didn't know If there were any more predators in the forest, but the stench of 3 dead bodies would be a dead giveaway for any high level creatures deeper within.

As I walked back to the main gate I began to go over everything that happened. I was pretty sure that the EXP that I gained from the fight is what allowed some of my wounds to heal. Whenever I checked my status again, making sure to not pronounce something incorrectly, I realized that nothing had changed. My stats and everything else were still displaying exactly the same. I also kept replaying the moment I nearly died. Those hobs had suddenly keeled over in pain the moment I had flung my hands out and screamed for the system to stop. I was wondering if maybe the system itself had loopholes I still didn't know about. I needed to ask around and find out how the system worked for other adventurers. People were naturally tight-lipped about their abilities, I was escorted out of the adventurers guild after I told them my system didn't work. Apparently most citizens of this world didn't have extensive systems. Some of them had ones tailored for their professions and others received unique classes but all the other information around it was very limited.

After checking in with the Guards at the gate I power walked back towards the bath-houses. Sherrels house was close by and I caught her as she was walking back from the main market.

"Yui, I haven't seen you in a while what have got up to?" She cocked her eyebrow at me and gave me a flat stare.

I chuckled "Nothing too crazy, I was just wandering the city and talking to people, I was asking around about different jobs I could get''

She stared at me for a second "just remember that we will ask that you pay us back in the future for the food and lodging we are providing you"

Did she know? "Of course, I will earn my keep as quickly as possible. You don't worry about me being a layabout"

Both of us approached the front door of her house. It was on the small side for the residents of the city. Made of mostly wood with some stone reinforcement near the bottom of the structure. Sherrel flipped back her dirty blonde hair and then retrieved a key from the inside of her clothes. She slotted the key into the door. It opened up before she was able to retrieve it. "It's so good to finally see my big sister after all this time. I hope you have finally convinced our visitor." She turned to me and then looked at her brother again "I think his choices are very limited right now" He turned his gaze towards me and then looked me up and down with the appraisal of a butcher at the market "He is a little on the skinny side, but if he proves himself at the docks he could provide and bring his own fish in".

I gave him a firm handshake "Thanks for the opportunity and your name?".

"Jonathan, Jonathan Tilan"

I let go of his hand and we walked into the main living area "Is there anything else I should know?"

"The hammock in the corner is where you will be sleeping for now. Little sis will make breakfast in the morning" He stopped and then looked back at me "have you ever done wood carving before?" The question surprised me and even more surprising was that I did do so as a kid. I also continued this throughout high school as a small hobby of mine.

"I have"

"If you want you can help me carve some figures for the market tomorrow any extra money can help"

“Sure thing Jon”

He got out a set of small knives from the kitchen and then brought out some wood for us to start whittling together. He slowly skinned each portion of the wood off. He showed me some of the figures he made. Most of them were of fish, some of them were recreations of different Gods that people worshiped in the City. Whatever helped him grab some extra coin in the market. Most of them were targeted towards children who tagged along with their parents and the others were thrown in for free with other people's orders. Jon told me all of this while he kept sketching out the structure of his carving with his smaller knife. I didn’t know what to think about Jon so far. He was at first suspicious of me; like all older brothers should be, but he was also very welcoming to me and was easy to talk to and work with. The rest of the evening went smoothly and we finished up our work. He had gotten down three different carvings of fish, while I had made the rough draft of a more intricate figure of Jon himself. I would gift it to him later when I had gotten back on my feet.

He was about a head taller than me and he was wearing rough brown pants with a white button up shirt. He had a more muscular figure than me. Most men in this world did. It was the product of manual labor and years of personal toil. A small crop of black hair cropped the top of his head and he had dark eyes. Honestly you would be surprised to think that both him and Sherrel were siblings. She was the opposite of him with blonde hair and a much lighter complexion. I stuck out like a thumb compared to both of them. My Korean mother and Japanese father meant that my height and build were very different compared to the average inhabitant of this world. Most people assumed I was smuggled to the City from a faraway land.

Tomorrow evening I would start my apprenticeship with Jonathan and then I would finally see if I could pull some more information out of The Protection Guild. I decided on a course of action finally after a tumultuous first week in another world. I was going to figure out my System. I would be a Hero.
