“I’m telling you… I don’t know.”
The security officer across the table from me scowled, “You’re telling me to believe that you just popped into existence in the middle of nowhere?”
I don’t know what to tell you chief, but that’s literally what happened to me…
As I had feared, my first contact with the station did not go as smoothly as I hoped.
I almost got shot at first sight because they thought I was a pirate ship thanks to the ship I was towing along.
When I managed to connect my comms to the security ships that came to meet me, they notified me that my ship had no form of identification on it.
Apparently that meant that I might be a spy or even a smuggler since that would usually be the case for ships that had no identification.
I just barely managed to convince them that I wasn’t someone suspicious because it wouldn’t make sense for me to just brazenly approach the station if I was actually a smuggler or a spy.
But that did not stop them from taking me aside to some security room and start questioning me though.
The security officer tapped on the tablet screen in front of him, “And you expect me to believe that you took out five pirates on your own? I might believe you if you’re at least an experienced Merc but you’re obviously not one.”
“I was lucky.”
“Uh-huh, I’m not even taking into account the fact that your ship has no identification whatsoever. Where was it made?”
“I already told you--”
“That you lost your memories, yeah, I heard that already.”
That was the best thing I could come up with, ok?!
And technically, it’s not actually a lie because I have no memory of how I ended up there or even got that ship!
He narrowed his eyes at me, “Someone with no memories is able to take out five pirates on her own and even fly their ship to a station knowing that they can sell it. How do you expect me to believe that?”
“Mu… Muscle memory…” I explained a little lamely.
The officer cocked an eyebrow at me, “Right… Even if I were to believe your claim about lost memories and stuff, the fact that you don’t show up in any records on our systems is something I can’t overlook. Unless you’re someone who came from outside the USC.”
I raised my hand meekly, “Err… What’s the USC?”
He slammed the table, “You’ve got to be shitting me right now! Are you even a human? Or did you Gene Splice yourself into one?!”
“What… What’s Gene Splice?”
The officer was looking at me in disbelief.
I gave him a forced smile and wondered what I did wrong before he slumped down on his chair.
“Ok… You’re definitely telling the truth… Or else you’re the dumbest person in this galaxy and I doubt someone like that would be able to take out five pirates and fly a ship straight, let alone know how to tether a ship and fly it to a station… Fuck this… I don’t get paid enough for this shit…”
A knock came from the door at that exact moment and we both turned to see another security officer walking in.
I'm guessing this one was higher in rank than the one in front of me since he stood up and saluted the guy.
He waved at the first officer, "At ease. What's going on here, officer?"
The one that had been interrogating me handed over the tablet to him, "New arrival. No personal or ship identification. Also seems to be suffering from amnesia."
The new officer raised an eyebrow while scrolling through the tablet, "Really? And you believe her to be telling the truth?"
The guy hesitated, obviously not willing to admit it.
Before he could answer though, the new officer interrupted him with a wave, "It's fine then, let her go."
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
"Sir?"
"I suppose this is your first time meeting them but this has happened before, albeit rarely. Something about being flung through space messing with memories or something. I’ve seen two other cases myself.”
The first officer looked shocked at the revelation and I'm also quite surprised to learn about this.
“So… We’re really just letting her go, sir?”
The officer shrugged, “What do we have here that a spy would want? And we’ve already checked her ship for contrabands, haven't we? She’s bringing business here and I won’t say no to that.”
The other officer grimaced but made no sounds of protest.
The new officer turned to me, "You at least remember your name, lady?"
I was about to tell him my old name but then paused for a moment to think.
"Tera," I decided.
He noticed my initial hesitation but did not comment on it.
Instead, he simply nodded, "I see. In that case, I bid you welcome to the Keyes station. I understand you wish to sell that ship you towed in?"
I nodded, "Is that possible or do I need some kind of clearance for it?"
"Usually, you would. But if you're a registered Merc of the Mercenary guild, then that would not be a problem."
Ah, thank you for the not so subtle suggestion.
"Is it hard to join the Mercenary Guild?"
He shrugged, "That would depend on your skill, wouldn't it? But if you were able to take on five pirates and win, I don't think that's a problem unless you were lying about that."
I nodded then gasped, "Oh right. Speaking of which… I managed to nab the coordinates of the pirate’s base from their console…”
He grinned, “We’ll pay you for it, don’t worry. I’ll recommend you to get your Merc licence first and we’ll be able to credit this to your achievements too.”
How convenient.
He raised an eyebrow at me, “Do you have a personal terminal? No wait, of course you do.”
“A what?”
Both officers frowned at me.
The first officer pointed at the terminal in his superior’s hands, “You know? Something like that? How did you even download the map coordinates then?”
I paused before deciding that I should just risk it.
I tapped on my wrist to activate my SC, causing a holographic screen to pop up.
Instead of being surprised, the two of them simply nodded.
The higher ranking officer made a face, “I see, you’re Cyaugmented. That actually might explain quite a lot about your situation… In that case, you might also want to stop by a Cyware Clinic to get yourself checked for that memory issue.”
I blinked at him.
Cyware? Is he talking about cybernetics?
“You have no idea what I’m talking about do you?” He sighed.
I shook my head.
He waved his hand at the other officer, “Call someone from the Mercenary Guild to guide her.”
The officer that had been interrogating me nodded before turning to me, “Just wait here, I’ll get someone from the Mercenary Guild to come get you.”
He then shut the door behind him as he left, leaving me there alone.
Well… All things considered, I think things went pretty well.
Ok, sure… I didn’t actually expect things to end up like this, but I got quite a lot of information from just this interaction alone.
So if I am not mistaken… There's apparently "gene splice" or whatever it is that can transform your body, cybernetic enhancements that can replace your body parts with machine parts… And there's the existence of some Mercenary Guild here as well…
And I guess USC is the name of the territory or something of where I'm in right now? I don't really know since I have no idea what the letters in that acronym stand for. For all I know, it might stand for Universally Stupid Cumdumpster.
All of these were definitely not present in the game. Heck, it didn't even have gene or cybernetic enhancements at all. There also weren't any mods made to make either of these possible either and… Wait…
The overhaul mod? Could it have been that?
But if I'm actually in the game… Damn it, I can't even tell whether it is because the mod author barely gave any description or explanation of what the mod changes!
I think at this stage it would be better for me to just assume that this was no longer a game anymore and I'm basically living another life in another World.
Or in this case, another galaxy I guess?
That means I need to plan how to survive here… First thing is getting money. In a galaxy like this, money is power. With enough of it, you'll be able to do anything you want.
And if your morals are loose enough, earning those credits would not be a hard thing to do.
The Mercenary Guild sounds like the best place for me to start right now, especially since I have a ship of my own so I can accept work that requires a ship.
With the money that I'll earn from selling off that pirate ship, I should be able to get enough credits to resupply and outfit my ship properly for whatever work the Mercenary Guild has.
Then once I have established myself enough… I'll need to see if either the gene enhancements or even cybernetic enhancements can change me back to a guy.
I want my dick back ok?
Just as I made up my mind, the door slid open to reveal a young woman with blonde hair that ended in curls just below her shoulder blades.
Her amber eyes shifted to stare at me, "You the lost girl? Get off your ass, let's go."
Guess she's the guide? Time to join the Mercs then.
