Chapter 3 - The Pitiful Children

Chapter 3 - The Pitiful Children

“You have done as well as someone such as you could, I guess. Hundreds of millions of your fellow humans were not worthy of even that. However, this fight was just to select those capable of entering the first part of your journey into the Tourney, so don’t even think you have done something after surviving the fight. It was the minimum requirement possible.”

The spider said, it’s arrogance evident it’s words. However, Alden could detect the faintest hints of bafflement in its voice. It’s clear that the method he used to defeat his opponent wasn’t one the spider expected.

Not because it was exceedingly impressive, as many humans the spiders were spectating had far greater shows of skill and strength, but because it was too weird. What sane person, when confronted with something they had never seen before, simply freeze up and use the opponent’s tactics against them? Still, the spider had a speech to complete.

“Your first true test shall start now, the Tutorial. After this, you’ll finally be recognized as a proper Challenger and be allowed to participate in the Tourney. However, differently from before, you and the other members will be given a choice. You may choose to give up now, not having to face the Tutorial and being returned to Earth unharmed, possessing the minimum required to live in a world of the Tourney. Or you may choose to put your life at risk, facing the Tutorial and all its dangers in search of something more. What do you choose, human?”

It’s safe to say that after the Spider’s words, most people would return home. The vast majority of people were confused and scared, many of them having survived their first fight due to blind luck, and only wished to go back to their normal lives. Alden knew this was a trap from the Tourney, however. After they all returned to Earth, passing the Tutorial or not, Earth would become host to hundreds of different species of monsters, many of them orders of magnitude stronger than the monsters they faced. Not facing the Tutorial would only leave these people more unprepared to survive their new world.

“I will face the Tutorial.” He said, saying his first words since his rebirth. He didn’t have any choice; the Tutorial was a crucial part of his plans and would be the first step to solving the many problems that would trouble the future of Humanity.

“Good choice. You will be transported to the world of the Tutorial soon, alongside a small group of other humans. I recommend using this time to understand the Tourney’s system and getting accustomed to whatever pitiful ability you have received. I doubt a species such as yours would have received anything that is even barely acceptable but any little bit could push your death a bit further away.

As a final remark, you are a little bit more interesting than the rest of your species, so your death would be disappointing, if understandable. I would recommend you try and live.”

With everything said, the spider turned around and entered the fog, not before sending him a slightly curious glance with one of its eyes. Now that the young man was completely alone, the golden fog organized itself into several large numbers, starting to count down from 10 minutes. That was the time he had before he would be transported into the Tutorial.

Alden didn’t think much of the spider’s final words. Despite their arrogant and cold appearance, he knew that the best way to describe their true behavior was as the one of a stereotypical tsundere. They quickly got attached to anything they found interesting or unique, but couldn’t show it due to their very nature.

However, he took its other words seriously. This was the only time he would have to prepare before being sent into a situation he knew could be incredibly dangerous. So, while he used these 10 minutes to stretch and prepare his body through a variety of warm-up exercise he had learned through the years, he mentally summoned the Tourney’s system, asking it to show his Abilities description.

As expected, it seems that it was almost entirely corrupted, with only the barest hints of its previous appearance shining through the corruption. This didn’t negatively affect his plans, but the seeing the ability that accompanied him for 6 decades in such a state did make slightly sad. He quickly shook that off, however, as there was something much more important that he needed to pay attention

Blinking on his status page, his Mask slot tried to call his attention to the fact he had options available from which to choose from. When he finally clicked the slot, he was met with another page, waiting for him to make his choice.

Welcome Challenger.

You may now choose a Mask, a protection and projection of your true self.

Make your choice wisely, as a Mask are permanent under most circumstances.

Masks will offer their users benefits, though it’s left to them to discover what they are.

You may only add one Mask after every Stage ascended or after exceptional showings, for they are marks of your worth and ability.

Due to your actions, you have 3 Masks available:

The Sage, for seeing beyond what was meant and gaining from it;

The Corpse, for refusing to accept your place in the Grave;

The Mystery, for corrupting what was meant to be pure;

Choose one of them.

This was… unexpected. Not that the Tourney would recognize his act of rebirth, that was a given due to its power, but that it would give him the opportunity to choose a Mask, even ones so weird and esoteric as these ones, such that Alden had never heard of these Masks before, which was a surprise given his extensive knowledge on the subject.

Still, he had to choose the best option right now. He threw out ‘The Corpse’ right away, as it would easily mislead people to think that he was one of the hateful undead. Now the choice rested between ‘The Sage’ and ‘The Mystery’.

The latter was attractive because, according to what he knew of masks, its description meant that he would probably receive an offensive bonus related to corruption or decay, or he would receive a stealth-related bonus. In regards to ‘The Sage’, however, he had little idea of what the Mask would give him. It was simply too esoteric for him to make a prediction.

In the end, however, he decided to pick ‘The Sage’ after a few minutes of thinking. A mask such as ‘The Mystery’ would easily make people think he was someone different and potentially dangerous, and he didn’t feel that the possible benefits of choosing it could outweigh that. ‘The Sage’, on the other hand’ had positive connotations in society and would probably help him get the trust of others. He also felt a bigger connection with ‘The Sage’ than the other option, considering he spent much of his past life as a scholar searching for knowledge all the over the world, which was another factor that led him to choose it over ‘The Mystery’.

With his choice made, he didn’t have much time left before the Tutorial began. He could only grab his staff and prepare for whatever may happen in the upcoming Trial. It would be extremely important for him to do everything he needed to do in the Tutorial, as this would set the basis for his future accomplishments. He would need to do everything perfectly.

Finally, when the timer counted to zero, Alden was suddenly teleported away to a small concrete room, where he and roughly a dozen other people faced each other. When they saw that the only beings in the room were other humans, most of them slightly relaxed, letting the various guns and weapons they were carrying rest. One of them, a tall, older man, took the initiative to be the first to talk.

“Well, I was expecting a much worse reception after what that damn spider said. Do any of you guys have any clue about what’s happening?”

He asked, letting the assault rifle he carried rest on his shoulders.

“I don’t have a clue. I can only hope that nothing bad happens anymore and we can just go home after this.”

Another person answered, this time a small woman carrying some sort of machine gun.

After she said that, however, the wall directly behind her exploded.
