Today is Cold

Today is Cold

1997th year of the New Reign, 12th day of makaram, ñāyar.

The window fogs as Mallory presses herself ever further into the glass, captivated by the pure white landscape. To a six year old, the overnight snow was its own kind of magic transformation. Desdemona looked on wondrously, not at the scene, but at the marvel of innocence before her.

The calm was broken by a loud crash downstairs and a “NO SNOW IN THE HOUSE!! ZELLERI DE MANX PUT THAT DOWN!!” Seems Leri was enjoying the cold too, the little heathen.

Not one to miss out on fun Des slid out to observe from the landing above. The scene was glorious chaos. Leri had managed to track snow all over the couch, into the carpet, onto a sleeping Kailani, cake it into the fur and under the scales of Gatorade the mini bear-lizard, and was now evading capture from a wrathful Bahrin.

Despite being a third her size, Leri was swiftly caught by the stocky woman. She pivoted and smushed her prey into soaked upholstery, right on top of poor Kail, muffling the child’s shrieks of delight. Their victim groaned from the fatal blow.

Des turned to the soft giggle next to her. Mallory grinned devilishly, soaking up the chaos.

Des stood back to observe her masterpiece: a one to one recreation of Gatorade the mini bear-lizard. Said subject sat beside her, soaking in his own greatness, his fluffy lizard tail lopping back and forth.

It was lumpy and fat and not at all accurate, but it was her’s.

The snow behind her crunched, giving her milliseconds before-

“AMBUSH!!”

Two bodies collided with her, sending her to the ground. Cold ungloved fingers shoved snow down her coat and in her hair. They stuck their freezing digits against her neck like the evil gremlins they were.

Slighted but not to be beaten, Des bravely rose to her feet once more, carrying up two giggling limpets that hung on her outstretched arms. She swung her limbs to hold onto her hostages and barreled straight for the nearest snowbank.

The impact winded her attackers, their shrieks and screams filling her with evil satisfaction.

“Again!” Mallory cheered with glee, looking absolutely adorable in her puffy winter coat. Her cheeks were dusted pink from peeking out her scarf. Her red winter hat contrasting her jet black hair. Absolutely adorable.

“No, let’s get Bahrin next!” Leri schemed, the pre-teen’s green eyes gleaming in mischief from under his mousy locks. He was wearing Alinur’s coat, the fae preferring the much too large covering to his own.

Before Des could advise against further angering the she-beast, the ankle biters fled the scene to enact more violence upon the world. A shame, really.

Sweet and alluring scents wafted seductively from the kitchen. Having no choice but to be carried by them likened to a cartoon character, Des wandered into the room.

Sneakily peeking in, she spots Sothy stood over the gas oven, retrieving a baking sheet from within.

Target identified: the best chocky chip cookies in existence.

Hastily gathering the troops (Kail) a plan was made.

Kail would distract Sothy under the guise of freezing her scaly tail off. Not one to give up a chance to mother hen, Sothy would be lured from their post guarding the gooey goodness. Des would then swoop in and gather the goods, making like a thief in the night.

The plan was foolproof.

Des watched in anticipation from around the corner as her partner in crime strolled up to the poor shmuck about to be robbed. After a few words exchanged between the tropical lake wyrm and the unspecified geriatric mythic, a warm looking blanket was conjured and laid across Kail’s shoulders. She was then handed a cookie and coddled out the door.

The over glorified lizard grinned evilly between bites of her coveted prize. Des flipped her off.
