The fiery leaves burned still on the tree, with an illusion of fire. Created by the colors of changing seasons. The fall had been well along  ushering in the cold of winter fast approaching and yet still clinging on to summer's warmth. The current war had come to a brief halt, as the respective sides prepared for the months of endless cold. Locals in the little village by the sea however were none too pleased with the decree, that the soldiers would be here in their home, for the entire winter.  The ancient tree had heard many rumors, but all expressing displeasure with the soldiers as they devoured the supply of food and beverage choking the town slowly to death similar to what befalls the victim of a snake.

The tree observed a soldier who had developed quite the taste for the local wine, stumbled out of the tavern and down to the docks where a young vagabond (kind term for hobo)  was seeking shelter for the night. The officer who was relatively young for his position stumbled in his drunken stupor, knocking into crates and barrels alike spilling their contents into the sea, and upon the vagabond. This particular crate had been holding a fishing net which now entangled the boy's legs preventing his escape, gazing at the boy the soldier spoke poorly ”Welll lookkie what I caught ,” giving off the foul bitter odor of the bitter bear sold by the merchants in market.

Thomas the young vagabond struggled at the net around his legs but to no avail.

“Ah fillfthy begga boy.” as Thomas still struggled against the net the soldier drew his sword and attempted to swing  clumsily losing his grip and sending it flying into the water with a great splash, the shift in weight caught him and sent him off balance.

ankles firmly in its clawed hands. The soldier had no warning as he was dragged into the water, a mermaids teeth  embedded in his flesh using her entire wriggling mass to bring him deeper using her pearl like claws she cut his skin beneath the water. He screamed in pure terrified agony, as she soon devoured him, her shark like maw bloodied by teeth shearing into his flesh, leaving only cracked white bone to sink into the deep.

Thomas, after a while peered over the edge boldly, as she surfaced.

A dark magical beauty replacing her horrendous form, she began to speak with a voice that seemed akin to music

“For the providing of such a delicious meal, I shall grant you one favor within my power.”

He pondered for a moment , as he decreed his request’

“Bring me the greatest treasure in the sea” he stated eagerly as she dived with haste.

As she rose once more a box of crude metal was clutched to her chest, until she placed it on the docks.

He took the box with great greed in his eyes, as he dumped the contents into his hand examining them. To his dismay only a single prickly black glob poured out of the container.

“This, is surely not the greatest treasure of the depths”

She chuckled, her eyes shifting to longing gaze ”What greater treasure is there, then a trap to ensnare one's prey?”

He found he could not answer as a numbness fell over his body, a single prick from the treasure bleeding faintly from his palm, as his vision faded.

With a grin of pleasure and vile teeth, all beauty was gone and her monster remained. She dragged his frozen body into the freezing autumn water, unable to scream or fight as she tore limbs from his body. Clouds of ruby blood erupting from the wounds as she swum flitting between the body parts in a terrifying joy as she came to his face, his eyes still watching with horror. She tore the eyes from the sockets, placing them in the box along with her treasure. She swam down into the depths her deep sapphire blue fin fluttering into the darkness of mysterious deep waters….
