Chapter 1: Missing Book

1821

8:38 PM

22 minutes till closing time

A sigh escaped through a young woman's lips as she started to get up from the wooden desk that held several used candles and several lit candles with stacks of old dusty books that no one dares to touch except for a few.

I should use the remaining time to find that missing book

Before this story starts any further, we should meet this young woman who will be the main character for this story.

This young woman's name is Rose, Rose Winter. She is an unwed woman of 20 hittings close to 21, she has long glossy black hair with startling red eyes. The reason why is she isn’t married yet was not because she wasn’t attractive or anything like, on the contrary, she was rather cute though not pretty as she had the appearance of a child, rather nobody married her because of her red eyes which seem to resemble the devil. She was a short and thin woman who worked at this library, The Golden LIbrary, though there was no gold except for the gold on the book’s pages. Now that we figure out the basic facts about her, let’s move on to the story.

As she got up from her desk, a blur could be seen as she felt a heavyweight that crashed on to her back that caused her to stumble from the weight, but she uprighted herself.

She looked up and found mischievous emerald eyes with hair like gold looked down at her, a smile could be seen as the man above her wrapped his arm around her small frame. The woman below him smiled at the gentle yet tight hug and they both stood in that position until Rose opened her mouth and said.

“Brother, what are you doing here. Are you not supposed to waiting for me at home.”

The man above her only placed his chin on her silky black hair.

“Hmmm. I know, but I miss you. You’re always gone early in the morning, and you come home late at night. Plus, I heard that it is dangerous for children to be alone at night. There’s a killer roaming out who is especially hungry for children's flesh,” he teased, knowing that his sister hates when people point out her childish appearance.

Rose immediately pulls herself away from her brother, and glare at him. Her brother, William only smiled at her little fit of anger.

“Oh, hush! I thought you had finally grown into a fine young man. It seems like you’re still 7 instead of 18.”

William only laughed, one of the joys in life for him was to bug his older sister.

“Ahh, but being young is always better. Who would choose to be old, dear sister”.

Rose huffed but smiled, “well, I suppose you’re right. Anyway, since you’re here. Why don’t you help me find a certain book.”

William winced, he and his sister were quite opposite when it comes to certain things. Rose likes books while he couldn't tolerate them at the sight of them, he told her books are nothing but jumbles of words on pages that cost the lives of poor neglected trees. He started to walk away from her even though he already knew what was going to happen.

“On second thought, perhaps I should get us some dinner. Dear me, I am quite famished, aren’t you?” William started to walk towards the exits, hoping he would make it.

  Come on, you're almost there.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

“Oh, I don’t think so,'' Rose grabbed her brother’s sleeves, pulling him towards her.

“Come on, you’re helping me. Maybe now, you’ll start listening to me more.”

Rose pulled her brother to the deeper part of the library, even though William clearly had enough strength to run away from her, he let Rose pulled him along.

“Now, that book we’re missing is a book called ‘Objects in time’. Apparently, we’ve been missing that book for quite a while now. And my lovely boss decided that I should be the one that finds it.” Rose told her brother, who stared in horror at the endless shelves of books.

Perhaps, it is still not too late to escape, William took a peek at his sister, who had already started to scavenge for the missing book. With her concentration away from him, he immediately looked around for an exit, which he discovered was about 15-20 footsteps away.

As if Rose read his mind, she looked up to him and did something that she knows that he wouldn't be able to resist.

“Please?” Rose’s red eyes suddenly seem to have grown twice its size, and invisible cat ears popped out. Her ultimate card to get people to do stuff for her: ultra-cute face.

William only stared at her for a moment, and her cute eyes and was battling himself mentally to block her attack before he sighed in defeat.

Things like her shouldn't exist in this world

It’s a wonder that no man is throwing himself at her feet

  Stupid red eyes…..but well done.

  “Fine”.

8:58 PM

Both Rose and William looked through every nook and cranny to find the missing book. William glanced at the clock and smiled in relief at the time, he turned went to find his sister.

“Rosie! It’s time for us to go.”

Rose looked up at the sound of his voice, “oh, is it that time already. Just give me a few more minutes.”

Rose turned away from her brother and kept looking.

  Where could that book be?

Just as Rose was about to give up searching, to William’s delight, she suddenly saw a book that was crammed in between two books.

Wait, that book doesn't look like it belongs there.

She walked towards the book, she pulled the book out and look at the title.

  Objects in time

William jumped in surprise when Rose suddenly screamed in delight.

“We found it!” Rose yelled, she held the book above her head as if she was showing off a trophy.

“Goodness Rose, here I thought you taught me to always be quiet in libraries,” William put his hand up to his chest as if to calm his heart.

Rose only opened the book, she looked at the first page. William felt alarm bells ringing in his head when Rose’s expression changed from happy to confuse to frighten.

“What is it?” William snatched the book from her hand and saw what had frightened her. On the first page of the book, somebody had written on it, it said.
