Chapter 4: Soul Energy Mystery

SOUL ENERGY MYSTERY

As the new day unfolded, I found myself escorted to a school where my next round of tests awaited. The atmosphere within the premises carried a blend of the traditional Japanese dojo and a conventional academic institution. The sound of students diligently practicing with wooden katanas echoed through the air, adding a touch of cultural richness to the surroundings.

After enduring a tedious academic examination, the moment of truth arrived as the results were finally released and handed over to Sara, who eagerly took on the role of the bearer of news.

"You have flawlessly passed every test. Excellent work!" Sara announced, her face adorned with a soft smile that reflected her genuine pride.

"Thank you," I replied gratefully, a surge of accomplishment filling my being, while the sight of a class of children perfecting their swordplay through the classroom window offered a picturesque backdrop.

Renji, joining us at the entrance of the now empty classroom, interjected with surprise, "I had no idea you were such a genius."

Returning his presence with a warm smile, I questioned, "Mr. Renji, where have you been?"

"Busy with work, I suppose. I simply came to check on you and the ongoing tests. By the way, I've thoroughly reviewed the medical reports, Sara. They're quite peculiar," Renji disclosed, his voice tinged with a hint of confusion.

"Indeed! The Soul Depth Analyzer displayed off-chart results," Sara confirmed, her brows knitting together in deep contemplation.

"This is strange. I'm struggling to establish a connection between the two," Renji admitted, his perplexed expression mirroring his inner turmoil.

Curiosity piqued, both Sara and I simultaneously inquired, "Connect what?"

"Well, Kiro, you don’t have any soul energy within you," Renji divulged, his revelation hanging heavily in the air, casting a shadow of uncertainty.

"What? How did you know? Astral view, right?" Sara interjected, seeking confirmation of Renji's understanding.

Renji nodded, providing assurance to Sara's assumption. Overwhelmed by the weight of this revelation, Sara's voice trembled as she exclaimed, "That's impossible!"

"What does that indicate?" I asked, feeling utterly perplexed and ignorant about the whole situation.

"Well, it means I have no idea how you're even alive. Your soul energy is your life force, but you don't possess it," Renji explained, his voice carrying a mix of concern and disbelief.

"I guess me not being from this world might be a hint?" I suggested, hoping to contribute to the engaging conversation.

"You might be onto something there. Perhaps it's best to leave the research and development wing to handle this matter," Renji proposed, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.

The research and development wing? I wondered to myself, puzzled by the unfamiliar terminology.

"Nevertheless, Kiro, you truly are an enigma. If this investigation fails to yield any progress, what will become of you?" Sara inquired, her voice tinged with genuine worry.

"I suppose I'll lead a normal life like any other citizen. There's nothing else to be done," I replied, attempting to conceal the slight disappointment that welled up within me.

No soul energy, huh? As long as it doesn't impede my search for Erica, I have no qualms. Still, it's disheartening to realize my powerlessness. But how am I able to perceive people's soul energy then?

"Kiro! The evening is approaching. How about attending a festival? We all need to clear our heads from this investigation," Renji suggested, injecting a sense of excitement into the conversation.

"Sure!" I agreed eagerly, appreciating the opportunity to temporarily escape the complexities that surrounded us.

"Sara, are you coming?" Renji inquired.

"I'm sorry, but I have important matters to attend to," Sara responded, her tone regretful yet determined.

"Don't worry about it! Miss Shogun Mini," Renji playfully taunted in a sarcastic and clownish manner, earning a surprised reaction from Sara.

"I've told you countless times to stop calling me that!" Sara snapped, briefly breaking her authoritative demeanor and revealing a moment of childlike embarrassment, before swiftly composing herself. "Have a good day!" she bid us farewell, resuming her professional persona.

"She has certainly grown over the years," Renji remarked, his voice tinged with nostalgia.

"Let's go!" Renji declared, his voice filled with enthusiasm, to which I simply replied with a nod of agreement.

Renji proceeded to inquire if I felt hungry, and I assured him that I had eaten something earlier.

After some time had passed, the dawn of the festival arrived, and I found myself walking through the lively streets alongside Renji, eagerly anticipating the arrival of Itsuka and Youto.

"Today is the day of the Dragon. The festival is a grand celebration and an expression of gratitude to the guardian dragon that watches over and protects this land," Renji explained, his voice filled with a sense of awe.

"A dragon in this world? Where is it?" I asked, my excitement mounting with every word.

Renji's reply was tinged with a touch of wistfulness. "The dragon hasn't been sighted for centuries. It has become more of a legendary tale than a tangible presence."

Suddenly, a familiar voice called out my name from behind, prompting me to turn around. "It's been a while!" Youto exclaimed as he and Itsuka arrived, their presence adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

We exchanged warm greetings and pleasantries, the air brimming with a sense of camaraderie. "Itsuka, you look wonderful!" I complimented, causing a delightful blush to grace her cheeks. "Thank you!" she responded, her voice filled with endearing shyness.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Youto couldn't contain his laughter at the sight, teasing, "Look, she's blushing!" Itsuka shot him a playful glare, telling him to hush in a mockingly irritated manner, and we shared a lighthearted moment of laughter.

"Shall we, everyone? The real fun is just about to begin!" Renji announced, his voice filled with excitement. Together, we ventured deeper into the night, eager to immerse ourselves in the revelry.

Our first stop was a vibrant snack stall, where we indulged in a mouthwatering array of local delicacies. Satiated, we ventured further into the festival grounds, guided by the dazzling lights and melodic strains of merriment that filled the air.

In the distance, a group of skilled fire wielders emerged, their souls brimming with vibrant energy. With graceful movements and focused intent, they conjured magnificent bursts of color and light, crafting each firework from the depths of their own soul energy. The night sky became their canvas, as cascades of vibrant sparks danced and intertwined, mesmerizing the onlookers below. The explosions painted the heavens in a mesmerizing tapestry of crimson, gold, and sapphire, capturing the essence of the dragon's fiery spirit that the festival sought to honor. Gasps of awe and delight echoed through the crowd as the dazzling display continued, evoking a sense of wonder and enchantment.

As the fireworks reached their crescendo, the air pulsated with a collective gasp of amazement. We stood in awe, hearts racing, spellbound by the beauty and skill before us.

With the firework spectacle concluded, we eagerly sought out the next highlight of the festival—the renowned Dragon Dance.

In the heart of the festival grounds, a vibrant procession began to take shape. A large, intricately designed dragon made of colorful fabric and adorned with shimmering scales came to life, carried aloft by a team of skilled performers. To the beat of rhythmic drums and the melodious notes of traditional instruments, the dragon weaved and danced through the streets, its serpentine body undulating with grace and precision.

As the dragon snaked its way through the crowds, children and adults alike joined the procession, their movements synchronized with the spirited rhythm. The vibrant energy was contagious, filling the atmosphere with an exhilarating sense of unity and celebration.

I watched in awe as the dragon twirled and twisted, its majestic presence commanding the attention of all. The combination of colorful fabric, flickering lanterns, and the collective pulse of the festival-goers created a mesmerizing spectacle. It was as if the dragon had awakened, breathing life into the very heart of the festivities.

With each step, the dragon seemed to radiate the spirit of the land's guardian, channeling its strength and wisdom. The crowd's cheers and applause mingled with the fervent beat of the drums, forging a symphony of joy and reverence.

As the Dragon Dance reached its climax, a surge of exhilaration washed over me. It was a moment of unity, a testament to the power of tradition and the unyielding spirit of the festival itself.

Together, we reveled in the enchanting atmosphere, embracing the spirit of the Dragon Spirit Festival and allowing ourselves to be swept away by the magic that surrounded us.

As the enchantment of the Dragon Dance held the crowd in its grasp, unbeknownst to us, a sinister presence lurked amidst the festivities. Within the throngs of people, a pickpocket stealthily targeted an unsuspecting victim. However, fortune had it that my gaze caught the thief in the act.

"Hey!" I shouted, my voice piercing through the clamor of the festival, drawing the thief's attention. Realizing he had been discovered, he swiftly attempted to flee the scene. Desperate to alert Renji and the others, I called out Renji's name, but the bustling crowd swallowed my words, making it impossible to locate my companions.

Feeling the weight of responsibility, I knew I couldn't waste precious time searching for my friends. I took a deep breath, steeling my resolve, and decided to pursue the pickpocket myself.

I chased him through the maze-like streets, his figure growing smaller in the distance. Finally, he dashed into a dimly lit alleyway, a path I reluctantly followed. However, as I stepped into the shadowed passage, my pursuit came to an abrupt halt.

Before me stood not just the pickpocket but two additional figures—a trio united against a common threat. Panic gripped me as the thief yelled, "He's a Senshi! He's a Senshi!"—an attempt to rally his companions against my presence.

Without missing a beat, one of the subordinates charged at me, his movements swift and calculated. In that moment, my mind flashed back to my rigorous karate training days, the lessons of discipline and self-defense ingrained within me.

As the subordinate unleashed a powerful lightning blast, borne from his soul energy, I instinctively raised my hands to cover my face in a defensive stance. To my astonishment, a mysterious phenomenon occurred, I absorbed the lightning blast, its energy merging with my own. A surge of newfound power coursed through me, empowering my every move.

What is happening? So I do have soul energy? I thought to myself as I observed what was happening to my body. The subordinate that attacked hesitated for a second and uttered “What is happening? Who are you?” confused about the phenomenon he observed. Nonetheless, he still lunged towards me, seeking to overpower the situation as he was intimidated.

However, I relied on my training, swiftly sidestepping his attack. In a seamless motion, I countered with a series of precise strikes and devastating blows, unleashing a display of martial prowess. The clash of fists and feet reverberated through the narrow alleyway as the battle ensued. Channeling the absorbed energy, I unleashed a flurry of strikes, each one guided by the lightning flowing within me.

Ducking and weaving with unparalleled agility, I seamlessly combined martial arts techniques with the raw force of the lightning-infused blows. The adversary, taken aback by my newfound strength and skill, found himself on the receiving end of a relentless assault.

His attacks were met with swift counters and lightning-imbued strikes, causing crackling sparks to illuminate the alley. Each move was fueled by an unstoppable determination and a burning desire to end the battle. With each strike, the subordinate's defenses crumbled, until he found himself overwhelmed, unable to withstand the unyielding force before him.

Finally, as the last strike landed, the subordinate crumpled to the ground, defeated and incapacitated. The alley fell silent, the echoes of the battle lingering in the air. With a sense of both awe and uncertainty, I surveyed the aftermath of the clash, realizing the extent of the power that had surged through me.

My body absorbed the lightning strike. What does it mean?

In the pulsating aftermath of the first confrontation, the atmosphere crackled with tension. The second subordinate, driven by anger and desperation, prepared to unleash his own assault. A fiery blaze built within his chest, fueling his resolve.

With a bellowing roar, the assailant expelled a searing fire blast from his very breath, a manifestation of his formidable soul energy. The scorching inferno hurtled towards me with alarming speed, threatening to consume everything in its path.

A flashback to what Renji said in the empty classroom came to my mind. I am not from this world. What if my soul energy is different. Is it that I can control soul energy elements when I absorb them? Well, I guess there is one way to find out! I thought to myself.

Decisively, my hands rose once again, ready to harness the power within. As the flames made contact, a surge of energy coursed through me, seeking to absorb and neutralize the imminent danger.

"I guess I was right! I do have powers!" I exclaimed, a mix of excitement and trepidation filling my thoughts.

But this time, something went awry. The fiery power I had absorbed began to surge out of control, growing more intense with each passing moment. The flames danced erratically, defying my attempts to contain them.

"I can’t control it! What is happening?" I thought to myself, panic coursing through my veins.

Desperation consumed me as I tried every mental exercise I knew to regain control over the chaotic situation, but my efforts proved futile. The power within me seemed to have a will of its own, beyond my comprehension and command.

Amidst the chaos, a figure materialized from the shadows. It was Renji, his presence a welcome beacon in the midst of the turmoil. With a swift and decisive movement, he delivered a palm strike to my neck.

The impact jolted through my body, shattering my concentration and disrupting the turbulent energy within. Darkness started to creep into my vision as my consciousness wavered, threatening to fade away.

"I’m losing consciousness," I thought to myself, feeling the world around me slip into oblivion. Renji quickly reacted, supporting my weight and preventing me from collapsing to the ground. A second later, darkness completely consumed me, and I drifted into unconsciousness.
