Chapter 0: Prologue

Chapter 0: Prologue

Ricardo Burn is a manager and main shareholder of a prestigious oil company in the USA. Right now he is in the main office in San Francisco going through paperwork.

‘Ahh that paperwork will kill me,’ was Ricardo’s thought. He was complaining because this week had been very hard on him. Besides a lot of work, he had a lot of trouble with a criminal organization that had threatened him for money. He was also under suspicion from the FBI for corruption and had received a lot of threats, some even death threats. His network confirmed that there were people trying to kill him. He decided to take precautions and had hired additional bodyguards and upgraded his security systems at work and home. While was thinking about all this, his assistant came into his office.

“Boss, we need to go, the meeting with our sub-contractor is starting in hour.”

“Oh, Jess, is it already that late? Okay, let’s go.”

Ricardo went with his assistant to an underground garage, where his luxury car and bodyguards were waiting. He sat in the back of the car, right behind the driver; on his right and beside the driver were two bodyguards. His assistant and two other bodyguards went into another car.

The cars were driving towards the highway. Everything was normal until reaching a big crossroad. When they were close to it, the traffic light turned red, but the driver didn’t slow down the car, remaining at constant speed. Ricardo looked at the driver he had known for over ten years, but now he looked completely frozen.

“Hey Mathew, stop that act right now, what are you doing betraying me!?” Ricardo yelled.

“Pull the emergency brake,” he commanded to  the bodyguard who was sitting beside the driver.

The guard turned his head in the direction of the brake, but suddenly stopped moving as he froze in the moment.

‘What the hell is going on?’ was Ricardo thought ‘looks like I need to do everything myself?’  Ricardo decided.

He stretched his hand towards the emergency brake, but when he just barely moved, his body froze. He couldn’t move even a muscle. The same was true for the remaining bodyguard on his right.

Ricardo couldn’t believe what was happening and could only think, ‘what the hell is going on!’

His thought did not last long, since the moment the car went into the crossroad through the red light, their car was hit from the right side by a big SUV, directly where Ricardo was sitting. The rear compartment of the car was completely destroyed. Ricardo’s body was a complete mess but he was still barely alive for next few seconds.

He could not turn his head around, but with his eyes he could see that the driver was a in similar condition. The bodyguards who were on the left side were not as badly hurt, but for some reason they had lost consciousness. Blood was pouring from Ricardo’s body as the last moment was coming close. He looked at the bodyguard beside him.

“Wake up, take me out of here,” he said in a low and despairing voice.

But the response did not come, instead his vision started becoming darker. When his time was coming to end, he could not do anything besides shamelessly begging for life. But even that didn’t last long, since he completely lost consciousness and his eyes lost the light in them.

As a Ricardo lost his life, many cars stopped in the crossroad. A few people left their cars and came closer to see if there is anything they could do to help. In the background, they could already hear the distant siren from an ambulance, coming to the scene of a big accident.

While everybody who saw the accident was shocked, there was one exception. He was a tall, black-haired man wearing a black suit and glasses. He was in a small room in an apartment building, close to the crossroad with a good view of the road where Ricardo’s car was driving. He was sitting at the computer and on his right was another machine that resembled an extra-large telescope. On his head, he wore headphones with a microphone.

“Accident was success” were the man’s only words.
