Chapter 14: Unforeseen Odds

As the shadows grew longer, their fight against the rare elite Goblin dragged on. ReaperX, Sylph, and Lyrabella gritted their teeth as they relentlessly continued their strategy of kiting, but it was clear to them that this would not be enough. The Goblin Elite, though slowed by Lyrabella's magic, was enduring their attacks with an unnatural resilience. Even ReaperX's high-powered rifle seemed to barely scratch the beast.

Their spirits waned as they started to understand the true nature of their opponent. ReaperX's traps, meticulously laid around the area, had been completely useless against the Goblin Elite. Its high physical resistance shrugged off the damage effortlessly, almost as if it were invincible against physical attacks.

"Why isn't it working?" ReaperX bellowed over the wind, watching as another bullet ricocheted harmlessly off the Goblin Elite. The revelation was unsettling - his attacks, the most potent in their group, were rendered useless against this enemy.

"It must have high physical resistance!" Lyrabella cried, her voice a strain against the ongoing cacophony. "My magic is working, but it's not enough. We need something more!"

Her words sparked an idea in Sylph's mind. She had noticed that Lyrabella's spells had been effective against the Goblin Elite. Magic seemed to be the way to get through its defenses. But what could they do? They were mostly physical attackers, with only Lyrabella being the primary magic wielder.

As the wind howled around them, Sylph remembered one of her newly acquired abilities. "Expose Weakness," an ability that could potentially reduce the defenses of the enemy. It was a risk, for it required getting close to the Goblin Elite - too close for comfort. But, without any other options left, it seemed like the only way out.

"We need to change our strategy!" Sylph yelled, her voice cutting through the tension. "I have an idea, but it's going to be risky!"

Quickly, she relayed her plan. ReaperX would continue to draw the Goblin Elite's attention while Lyrabella focused on keeping Sylph alive. In the meantime, Sylph would attempt to get close enough to the Goblin Elite to land her "Expose Weakness" ability.

If successful, this ability would lower the Goblin Elite's defenses, allowing them to deal more damage. It was a risky move, a desperate gamble. However, faced with the raw power of the Goblin Elite, their regular tactics were ineffective.

"We don't have any other choice,"

With a nod of agreement, ReaperX resumed his dance of distraction while Lyrabella positioned herself to keep a close eye on Sylph. Sylph, bracing herself for the upcoming danger, gulped and sprinted toward the Goblin Elite.

As Sylph closed the distance, the Goblin Elite turned its massive head towards her, its eyes glowing ominously. It raised its colossal weapon in the air, intending to smash her into the ground. Sylph, however, was faster. She dove and rolled beneath its swing, using the momentum to leap up and land her "Expose Weakness" ability on its unarmored back.

A blinding light enveloped the Goblin Elite momentarily as the skill took effect. Sylph, in mid-air, saw a shimmering weak spot appear on the front of Goblin Elite's neck - a spot that seemed almost ethereal, glowing with a faint, pulsating light. However, before she could retreat, the Goblin Elite swung around, landing a vicious blow and sending Sylph crashing onto the ground.

She screamed, her health bar draining rapidly until it hit zero, her body then disintegrated into a myriad of light particles - the universal symbol of a player's death. However, her sacrifice was not in vain. The glowing spot, the weak point, remained on the Goblin Elite's back, a beacon of hope in the midst of despair.

With a renewed sense of urgency, ReaperX repositioned himself, his Eagle's Eye rifle ready. His previous shots had barely scratched the Goblin Elite, barely doing 10 points of damage on each hit, a minuscule amount considering the beast's health pool, which was in the thousands. But now, there was a chance.

ReaperX took a deep breath, steadying his aim. With a swift pull of the trigger, a bullet soared across the air, piercing through the wind before hitting the glowing weak spot. A successful hit. The damage counter next to the Goblin Elite’s health bar jumped from 10 to a staggering 100, confirming that Sylph’s gambit had indeed worked.

With a roar, the Goblin Elite stumbled forward, its health bar visibly decreasing. What was once an invincible beast was now finally showing signs of weakness. Even though they had lost Sylph for the moment, ReaperX and Lyrabella felt a glimmer of hope. If they could keep hitting that weak spot, they might just bring this behemoth down. Their desperate gamble was now their lifeline in this deadly battle.

With Sylph fallen, the dynamics of the fight shifted drastically. ReaperX, primarily a sniper, understood the need to shift his role. He had to kite the Goblin Elite, exploiting its slowed state, all while landing precise hits on its weak spot. Meanwhile, Lyrabella, their medic, had her role cut out too.

"Lyra, stick to your debuff and slowing spells," ReaperX commanded, eyes fixed on the hulking form of the Goblin Elite. "I'll keep it occupied. Healing won't help if it lands a hit on either of us!"

Nodding her affirmation, Lyrabella transitioned her focus. Her magic, normally soothing and restorative, now took on a more assertive role. Casting out her hands, she launched a slow spell at the Goblin Elite, chaining it with successive debuffs. The monster roared in frustration, movements visibly sluggish, yet its eyes burned with a ferocity that emphasized the danger it still posed.

As Lyrabella worked her magic, ReaperX began his dance with death. The aim was to keep a balance between maintaining a safe distance and ensuring a clear shot to the weak spot on the Goblin Elite. His upgraded Eagle's Eye rifle hummed with energy as he took aim, his heart pounding in rhythm with the loading and firing of his weapon.

Every hit on the weak spot took a decent chunk of the Goblin Elite's health, the numbers popping up with each hit displayed a satisfying three-digit damage value. Despite the odds, their strategy was working.

However, as the monster's health dropped, its movements became less predictable. Despite the slowing spell, the Goblin Elite began swiping and lunging erratically. Their fight was far from over. ReaperX needed to stay focused, and Lyrabella needed to keep the monster slowed. It was a tense game of survival and strategy.

The struggle against the rare Goblin Elite continued. The hulking beast's health was gradually diminishing, but not without a fight. It bellowed in frustration, each swing of its massive club becoming increasingly desperate, its roars echoing around the devastated goblin fortress.

ReaperX kept his nerve steady, focusing on the rhythm of their strategy – aim, fire, move. His heart pounded in sync with the thump of his sniper rifle's recoil against his shoulder. The slow spell and debuffs cast by Lyrabella were essential, keeping the monster at bay while he dealt the damage.

However, they couldn't keep up the rhythm indefinitely. ReaperX was low on ammunition, and Lyrabella's magic reserves were dwindling. They needed a final push, something to tip the scales in their favor.

"Lyra," ReaperX called out, "Switch to offensive spells. We need to finish this."

"But--" Lyrabella protested, hesitating. Her spells weren't as damaging as she'd like.

"Just trust me!" ReaperX urged.

Taking a deep breath, Lyrabella nodded and began chanting offensive spells. Her hands moved with an incantation, casting a light spell that zapped the Goblin Elite. It wasn't much, but it was damage, and right now, every bit counted.

Emboldened by Lyrabella's support, ReaperX drew upon the last of his energy reserves. Taking a deep breath, he steadied his aim for a final salvo. One shot, two shots, three shots... the monster staggered.

With a deafening roar, the Goblin Elite lunged forward one last time. But it was too late. ReaperX had already squeezed the trigger for his final shot. The bullet pierced the monster's weak spot, and with a monstrous groan, the Goblin Elite collapsed, its remaining health points completely drained.

There was a moment of silence before a cheer erupted from Lyrabella, and a sigh of relief from ReaperX. They had done it. They had slain the rare Goblin Elite. Despite the heavy cost, the victory was theirs. As the loot from the elite monster appeared before them, they looked at each other and couldn't help but smile.
