Storage units are big separate building blocks labeled numerically.
Jeremy and Lilliana stop by one of the storages. They abandon their motorcycle on the side of the street in front of Block 4. Jeremy picks his bag. Alina run to enter block 4 but Jeremy stops her,
“Not the one where we parked our ride in front of” said Jeremy, walking both ahead as the old earth gang’s motorcycle get nearer,
“This one” said Alina pointing at block number 6
“No more ahead”
“We don’t have time!” said Alina entering block number 7 and a startled Jeremy follows her.
This was the first time Alina and Jeremy entered the storage block areas and the first time they dared to set foot inside one of the blocks. Alina wondered how easy it was for them to come and hide knowing that usually this area is highly secured by the new earth guards. Not even the old earth gang can come close.
The humongous storage blocks house the memories of the people that left to the new earth. From technical devices to knicknacks. William Wade was adamant to bring nothing from the old earth on board to the new earth. Alina and her family submitted their belongings as well, including Alina and Lilliana’s tablets.
“They all have left already” said Jeremy
“What do you mean?” said Alina
“The blocks are usually highly secured but all the new earth guards must have left since the final migration is tomorrow”
“...tomorrow”
Alina couldn’t believe what she heard, she was waiting and waiting all this time in hope of someone helping her and her family to reach the new earth. But no one is coming to save her. She knows it now. But what she doesn’t know is how to reach those planes tomorrow. Or if she even could do it.
Jeremy notices her anxious and fright,
“Don’t worry you can come with me, we’re going there” said Jeremy
“Really!! But we have to go back for my family” said Alina
“We can't, we don't have time. We need to move now”
“If it were for me I won’t even bother, my mother needs to go to the new earth she is sick she needs her medication, please..please understand” said Alina pleading
“I would..I want to help you..but i don’t know about the others..” said Jeremy before Alina turns her upset face away reaching the door to leave.
Jeremy stops her,
“The gangs are still out there” said Jeremy
“I need to leave!!” said Alina
“They’ll capture you”
“They would’ve come in if they want to capture us they must’ve left”
“They can’t come in it is the new earth guard territory”
Alina left to look for another door. And if they stayed a second longer, they would’ve heard the screams of the old earth gang outside.
She kept opening every door, prancing the aisle of shelves. Jeremy’s repeated explanation that there is no other exit seeping into the air not reaching her. Jeremy is still freaked out by how silent the place is, did they all really leave? But then why are the old earth gang not entering?
Both are shaken up; they didn’t notice the figure moving in the background looking at them.
Alina pauses suddenly. Jeremy almost bumps into her. A room with its door open looked different from the rest, The room is filled with small cylinders labeled each with 8 digits numbers placed on shelves.
“What the actual..” said Jeremy confused
“Bottles!” Said Alina
“No, no, no , not BOTTLES!” said Jeremy holding in laughter “These are cylinders silly”
“Whatever” Alina was embarrassed
“Do you see any exit door between your bottles? No, so can we leave already”
“Cylinders, they’re cylinders” said Alina walks forward.
“I know..I told.. Humph” Jeremy signs and moves sideways inside the room, checking it out, wondering what he said wrong.
Alina walks and sees a screen attached to a device where a cylinder is connected. Those weren't cylinders, they're hard disks.
“Come here!” shouted Alina
“You come here!” Jeremy said louder, frustrated from following Alina around
“I found something”
“What?”
“Its a..its a.. I found a door”
Jeremy comes running
“Where is the door?”
“There is no door but I found this!”
“You said you found a door”
“Look at it! It'll take a century to describe this thing”
Jeremy seeing a regular computer with a monitor over it and turns to go back
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
Alina grabs his arm and point at the computer
“It's on. Someone must've been here” said Alina
“Are those cylinders attached to the computer?” said Jeremy, bending down to check it out. Alina is looking from above him.
“They're some kind of storages disks”
Alina hovers the mouse and the screen opens.
A video of a father holding his one year old son at a birthday party is paused. Alina presses enter and the audio plays of lively music, startling both of them.
Alina is mesmerized by it. Jeremy jumps from under the table, bumps his head, and falls under the table. He stumbles on his knees and reaches aimlessly.
Alina unbothered by the audio.
Jeremy manages to pause it.
Alina is startled by the video stopping. She frowns.
“Are you trying to lead them straight to us!!” said Jeremy
Alina turns the volume down and plays the video. Jeremy up on his feet, can’t get his eyes away.
The man behind the ‘CAMERA’ is shaky and gives the little boy a kiss on the forehead. A calendar in the back shows the year 2055
“Look 2055!” said Alina
“This is why it's so shaky. I heard that it was a good year though.”
“Compared to now! Every year was a good year..we're abandoning earth”
“Yes to mark the new age” said Jeremy excitedly
“The age of no return ha?”
Alina signs. Jeremy turns his head and sees her. He looks down. Gets his bike key from his pocket. A ship keychain dangles from it.
Alina gazing at the monitor showing the food of the party
“Look at this feast, we've got pizza, pies, mac and cheese,” said the man behind the camera pointing at the food
Jeremy dangles the keychain in front of Alina. Alina looks at Jeremy.
“Oceans. The new world has oceans. I plan on sailing them all.. There’s everything in the new earth” said Jeremy
“Everything.. “ said Alina facing the monitor “They have everything we need. I don’t want oceans or ships. All I want is a stable supply of a certain type of a teeny tiny needle. ”
“You’re sick?!”
“My mother is and she needs one medicine. Sounds simple right. Then why the hell is it too damn hard to continue?!”
Alina looks at the monitor where the footage is of a kitchen counter and people talking. Jeremy looks at Alina feeling out of control.
“..this guy sure captured everything at the party. He didn't pause the video even once. You know, at the new earth, I'll invite you for a drive in my ship”
“A drive! And you mocked me when I called the cylinders bottles”
“Forget about it.” embarrassed, said Jeremy
Alina looks fondly at his blushing face.
“As long as it's nothing like your bike driving, I'd love to. But I don’t think it’ll happen”
“It will. I promise you”
Jeremy looks at Alina sure and proud and they stare at each other's eyes. Alina wonders how he can achieve that or even think that he can.
The monitor behind the profile of the two changes to a mirror in the bathroom-
“This is ridiculous. I can't believe I have to go back to work.” said the man behind the camera
Alina and Jeremy turn their faces to the monitor. Perplexed and Shocked. Their faces turn sour. The Man is looking at a mirror in the bathroom. He is washing his face and the camera is going up and down as he is rinsing his face.
“What is it attached to his face?!” said Alina
The man behind the ‘camera’ moves along a corridor. He turns and enters a room. He grabs a pants and the scene goes down showing hands pulling down his pants. Alina and Jeremy jaws drop. They see the pants tossed on the floor. And the hands pull up another pair of pants.
“It's as if we’re inside his head” said Jeremy
Alina grabs another cylinder. she subtly pulls the old one away, turning it off.
“What're you doing?” said Jeremy
Alina attaches another one in and plays it. The same thing, an ongoing scene of a guy at work typing and looking at coworkers.
“It's not stopping!” said Alina
“It can't be what we're thinking of!”
“What the crap!”
“What the actual crap?!”
Alina fast forwards the video. We see days and nights, driving, work, sleep, and the cycle repeats.
Last clip: The guy is put in a chamber and a man in a coat, barely in the view.
“This is the last step before entering the new earth. Trust me you don’t need it. A fresh start awaits you” said the man in a coat
And the screen turns black. The video ends.
“...Dumn” said Jeremy
Alina reaches for another cylinder-
“Dumn they're all the same!” Jeremy can’t believe what he saw but the screams and gunshots from outside startle him. The gang must’ve entered the building!
Four black cylinders behind the computer station catch Alina’s eyes. She grabs one.
“What are you doing? We have to run!” said Jeremy
“Wait! I have to see this.” said Alina as she plugs the cylinder on.
Fast footsteps are heard from afar and Jeremy heads out to check it out while Alina plays the video.
Jeremy returns to the main door from where they entered. It is open.
The videos from the black cylinders play and Alina gasps looking at the monitor and the door shuts abruptly, Scaring her even more when she sees what is standing by the door. Alina is quiet but her heart beats knocking on her chest and she can't move.
The figure, tall and broad with a slight hunch, a lion mane that expands from his head to his legs. Black eyes with no whites. A voice so deep it feels like shards of glass entering the hearts every time he speaks. He wasn’t a human, so why was he wearing a new earth guard suit? Seeing the head cover helmet on the floor, Alina understood what she saw in the black cylinders now.
“Last day of work and humans are just running loose” said the humanoid Gregory “Seen enough?” he added as Gregory walks towards Alina. “Now let me see what you have”
Jeremy looks out the entrance door. He looks left and right, he sees nothing but he hears footsteps sound increase from inside the block. It’s the new earth guards and they see him. He can’t go back in. Jeremy leaves the building. He hesitated thinking of Alina, but he knew he can’t do anything, not right now anyway. Jeremy sees his bike parked near block 4 where he dropped it and runs towards it. The guards are behind him. He gets on it and takes off.
“I am coming back for you Alina, I promise.” Jeremy vowed to himself
Inside the cylinder room, Alina lays unconscious on the ground,
“Get back to your positions assholes! Secure the storages and the airport with your life. The plan won’t be ruined at its last stage” said Gregory to a radio communicator.
