Chapter 0: Lost in the Forest

----------------------------------------

In a vast sea of green, where critters of all sorts of sizes roam, horrifying monsters rule, and everything is somewhat quiet and peaceful. This is the forest of Evergreen, a super large forest that covers up almost half of the continent. Here in evergreen players spawn randomly, they can either spawn in a den of wolves or beside an ancient treasure chest, everything can happen depending on their luck.

The game just started but players are already swarming inside of the forest running to get treasures or running away to save their lives. Either way, it is still acceptable because in this world, the weak can be strong and the strong can experience being the weak.

A small flash of light flashes and a body slowly materialized, it was the body of a teenager, a young man. He had black hair, he had a scrawny body, but he was quite tall. His face was very plain aside from a negligible scar on his chin, without it you could throw him a stack of people and it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

He was wearing a gray sack for clothing, newcomers like him are only given a sack as clothing, it practically has no sort of protection for attacks and the weather, and its durability is doubtable.

"It's a chilly day," The young man said dejectedly, wondering why it's cold even inside of a game.

"achoo"

"Now I'm sneezing, Argh" the young man grumbled as he surveyed his surroundings as if he’s a pervert looking at a beautiful maiden, but seeing nothing but endless trees in his vision, he felt relaxed.

Walking forward, he arrived at a small creek. The creek was clean and the water was so sparkly. Feeling a little thirsty he cupped a handful of water and drank it.

"That was refreshing." He exclaimed as he wiped his face with the leftover water from his hands. Wiping his hands on the sack he was wearing, he noticed that instead of his hands drying they became dirty, looking at the sack which he thought was naturally brown he found out that it was so filthy.

So his first thought was to wash his sack on the creek. Since he was already there, he might as well take a bath. Taking off the sack, the young man was fully naked out in the open air. With a splash, he landed on the creek. Fortunately, the water was deep enough for him to land without damage.

Scrubbing the sack against itself, the young man slowly scrapes away the grime from the sack, after a while, it was good as new.

The young man then puts on the sack again and starts walking downstream, hoping to find another person to share the journey with. Today was the first day of the tenth virtual dive game, where players essentially make a copy of their consciousness, which they can control, into a server.

The servers then host a game which players around can play, then afterward after the player is done playing, the servers would download the information into the human brain storing it in a hibernation-like state, and when the player wants to recall memories inside the game it will pop up naturally and quickly.

After several hours of walking and picking up somewhat useful rocks he arrived in front of a small camping ground, from afar he could see four small figures, their skin is green but different shades for each one, have long and pointy ears and wear rags.

"They seemed to be those goblins from the fickle fantasy of human beings" The young man exclaimed silently as he slowly approached the camp like a crouching tiger hiding behind large rocks, and picking up some small rocks along the way.

"ack" the young man winced a bit as his fingers slightly brushed on a small pointed object with a metal-like sheen.

"The RNG* gods have blessed me" exclaims the young man as he pulls the sharp object, it was a kitchen knife that was snapped in half, and he got the tip part.

Without hesitation, he slowly backed away and quietly picked up some driftwood, and with the knife tip's edge, he cut a strip of cloth from the sack around the neck area, creating a much larger hole where his head could fit.

tying up the broken knife on the driftwood with the cloth to form a very crude spear was quite smart for a frail human being. With a battle cry, the young man dashes through the goblin camp like they were just some sheep waiting to be slaughtered, but now they were not in the least sense.

After Arriving in front of one of the shocking goblins he thrusts his spear with hands along with the momentum he gathered from the sprint, and with a loud and bone tearing sound he pierces through the goblin’s skull. That’s when it all started sinking into his mind, "The sensation is too fucking realistic."

Trembling with shock and fear as blood trickles down from the skull to the wooden body of the spear, to his hands. It felt too vivid like he was killing a real creature. It can either make one's blood boil, or it can destroy one's will.

But as he stood there shocked and on the verge of mental collapse, the two other goblins pounced on him like rabid dogs, he didn't move.

He just stood there until he felt a hot sensation in his thighs, "Oh, these small guys can deal pain!" he exclaimed as he was waking up back to his senses. His first thought was to pull the spear out of the goblin's head, but he cannot pull it out without help.

His mind raced clearly as he saw the two goblins approach him again after the first wave of attack, Suddenly he pierces the spearhead along with the goblins body to the ground and steps on the corpse, then pulls out the spear with so much blood spurting out in every direction.

Like a war god he did a hundred eighty degree horizontal sweep in the direction where the two goblins would be struck simultaneously, the first goblin had been hit cleanly in the neck while the other being hit on the shoulder.

As both creatures lay on the ground bleeding, and one was on death's door, screaming and pointing sharp gazes at the young man. The young man mercilessly thrusts his spear into both goblin's bodies, ending their struggle for misery.

Heaving and slightly out of breath, the young man puked his virtual empty stomach, but with the aid of the system, the mental effects on him appeared to be only temporary. Collecting his courage, he picks up all of the three goblin's belonging from the small pot they were cooking on to their small loincloths leaving three tiny creatures naked on the creekside.

Counting the spoils of his battle, he earned a rusted shortsword, a bone knife, and a sling. Aside from the weapons he also got several copper coins, a cooking pot, and animal fangs. “It was quite a good harvest.” smiled the young man as he wrapped the wound on his thigh with the cloth from the goblins’ crotch.

His traveling speed is reduced by an eighth of his normal speed because of the wound on his thigh, making his travels a little bit harder. It also stings periodically making the young man wince in pain once in a while, added by the slowly dripping blood which might attract an unwanted visitor.

Slowly limping down along the creek he continued walking until he arrived at a larger opening of the body of water. And as he continuously walks along with it the surface that the water occupies becomes larger and larger until one is needed to follow the river inside of the forest to continue.

“I’ll just walk along the forest and the river, I guess” The young man talked to himself then he walked up from the riverbank towards the slightly elevated forest. Tracing the grassy forest he saw the beauty of life slowly drifting away from the terrors of the world, from the singing bird to a cunning fox, all enjoyed the warmth of the sunlight passing through the gaps of the leaves.

Along the way, he would encounter snakes, wolves, giant ants, and other dangerous critters but with a little bit of creativity, he successfully avoided them without much problem. On his right was a fast-flowing river, on his left was a force of nature not to be reckoned with, and all he could do was to continue forward no matter what it takes.

Picking up some random stuff on the path, cutting up the upper part of the potato sack he was wearing, leaving only the area around his crotch for some sort of ill privacy, and tying up the part with holes with a vine commonly found on the forest trees.

After several hours of walking and picking up some stuff, he could no longer feel his feet and back because of the weight of the bag so he decided to rest, on a tree stump along the path he was following, on the stump was a bunch of mushrooms so he decided to carefully cut them and place them on the goblin loincloth to secure them away from all the things he picked in case they might contain poison or they would get ruined.

“Growl”

“Man, the realism in this game is so realistic I do feel hungry.” The young man grumbles as he hugs himself on top of the tree stump. He had been walking for hours and he did not want to eat the makeshift soup that the goblins conjured up from the bottom of hell itself. As he wonders what to eat he hears a rustling of leaves on the nearby brush, and he could faintly hear some distant voices, though he is too tired to check.

As he readies his rumbling self in case a battle might break out between him and what would come out of the brush, he holds the rusty shortsword with his right hand, and the makeshift spear on his left hand. The faint voices slowly become clearer as silhouettes of people pass through the brush.

“Man those goblins are tough as hell and we don't even have a decent weapon.” A young fit man grumbles as he walks out of the bush without care if on the other side he would encounter.

“Yeah, bro we only have the useless pointy sticks with us, I wi-” another fit youth walking alongside the first guy replied but he suddenly stopped with the words in his throat as he saw a young man looking at him baring weapons in both hands.

Seeing the young man, the pair of youths did not attempt to follow, instead, they stood there like stones, it was only until two fine ladies went out of the bush wearing the same sacks as all of them. They were quite the beauties, contrasting the potato sack they were covered with.

“Friend, we’re not hostile. Chill bro, please put away that knife and spear, please we were just attacked a while ago” one of the lean-looking guys chickened out as his voice cracked up as he said every word. While the other guy was a little bit worried, and the girls were horrified as they saw a primitive-looking guy with weapons in both hands looking at them with the intent to kill.

Seeing that it was human beings that appeared out of the bush, but looking at the two guys who were fit he still didn't put away the knife and the spear instead he pointed at a small distant rock, then said. “Move over there and don't move a single step.”

It was pretty awkward, the two lean guy’s faces were so cold that they emit cold air around them. The pretty girls were holding each other behind the two guys. While the young man immediately packed everything he had into his makeshift bag, he then started to follow the river.

But before going too far he threw the makeshift spear that he made in front of the terrified group of people, shouting the words. “Don’t be a chicken, use anything at your disposal to survive but don't be a dick and try to kill others.” before running off along the river, then disappearing into the thick forest.
