Chapter 15: “Team One’s Test”

Chapter 15: “Team One’s Test”

Kenji sat alone at the entrance of Training Ground forty-four, gazing at the inky pre-dawn sky. He grumbled under his breath as he consumed his breakfast, bothered by the conspicuous absence of his teammates. They were scheduled to convene at half past four in the morning for their first training session with their Jonin sensei, but Kenji couldn't shake off a nagging sense of unease about his whole situation.

Kenji's thoughts drifted back to the moment after the graduation ceremony when the headmaster had left the room. His curiosity piqued, he approached his instructor, eager to learn more about the enigmatic Jonin who would guide them on their journey.

"Sensei," Kenji began hesitantly, "I was wondering... What's the name of our Jonin sensei? You didn't mention it during the ceremony."

The instructor glanced at Kenji, a faint smile gracing his lips. "Ah, well, you see, that's a bit of a secret. I'm not at liberty to divulge his identity just yet. You'll find out soon enough, Kenji."

"But, sensei," Kenji persisted, "how can we trust someone if we don't even know their name? What if they're not suited to teach us?"

The instructor placed a reassuring hand on Kenji's shoulder. "I understand your concerns, but you must trust the wisdom of the village. They chose this Jonin for a reason. He's an exceptional ninja, and he'll be instrumental in your growth."

Kenji frowned, still unsatisfied with the cryptic response. "Sensei, we're about to entrust our lives to this person. I believe we have the right to know who they are."

The instructor's expression softened as he looked into Kenji's determined eyes. "You're a smart and vigilant young man, Kenji, and I admire that. But there are things even I don't know, and I must respect the decisions made by those higher up. All I can tell you is that your Jonin sensei is a formidable and experienced ninja. You'll know more about him soon, and then you can make your own judgments."

Kenji nodded reluctantly, understanding that his instructor would not provide the information he sought. The mystery surrounding their Jonin sensei only fueled his anticipation, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about the man, the way he walked, talked, the air of authority. He walked away, he couldn't help but wonder who this enigmatic figure was and what lay in store for them under his tutelage.

Kenji let out a sigh, his thoughts drifted to his teammates, both hailing from esteemed and venerated clans within the village. Nawaki was a scion of the Senju clan, while Tomoe was born into the Uchiha clan; their families bore a long-standing animosity for one another. Adding to Kenji's frustration, both Nawaki and Tomoe perpetuated the same rivalry as their clans. "Just when I think things can't get worse, the damn brats are like stubborn mules following in their clan's footsteps," he murmured to himself. "I hope they don't screw things up."

The memories of the previous day washed over Kenji, transporting him back. After the formalities with his sensei had concluded, he decided to take the initiative to foster camaraderie among his new teammates. He approached Nawaki and Tomoe, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

"Hey, guys," Kenji began, "how about we celebrate our graduation with lunch together? It'll give us a chance to get to know each other better before our training starts."

Nawaki's eyes brightened at the suggestion. "Sounds great, Kenji! Let's go to Benihana. Their maki rolls are legendary."

Tomoe's expression soured, her arms crossed defensively. "No way, Nawaki. Everyone knows the Auntie Yoko Grill has the best food in the village. We're going there."

The tension between Nawaki and Tomoe intensified, as they locked eyes, neither willing to concede. Kenji, sensing the brewing storm, attempted to mediate the situation.

"Come on, guys," he interjected, "let's not make this about your clans. We're a team now, and we should be able to enjoy a meal together without arguing."

Nawaki shot back, his voice firm, "You don't understand, Monkey. The Senju clan has been providing the village with the best food for generations. It's a matter of pride."

Tomoe scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Please, Nawaki. The Uchiha clan has been contributing to the village just as much, if not more. I won't back down on this."

Kenji, realizing that the conversation was spiraling out of control, tried one last time to diffuse the tension. "Alright, how about this? We'll go to a neutral place, somewhere that's not affiliated with either clan. That way, we can focus on getting to know each other and leave the clan rivalry behind."

Both Nawaki and Tomoe reluctantly agreed, though their expressions conveyed lingering dissatisfaction. They settled on a small ramen shop, a neutral ground where they could momentarily forget the centuries-old animoity between their clans. Over steaming bowls of ramen, the trio engaged in guarded conversation, each member cautiously probing the depths of their newfound alliance.

As the lunch came to an end, Kenji hoped that the shared meal had laid the foundation for future cooperation. He knew it would take time to break down the barriers between Nawaki and Tomoe, but he was determined to do everything in his power to ensure the success of their team.

While lost in thought, Kenji noticed Nawaki and Tomoe approaching from a distance. He steeled himself, determined to do whatever it took to ensure the team's success. He refused to let his teammates' clan rivalry compromise their chances of becoming an effective unit. Drawing a deep breath, he strode towards them, prepared to confront any challenges that lay ahead.

"Morning, Kenji," Nawaki greeted him with a friendly nod. "Morning," Kenji responded, striving to maintain a neutral tone.

Tomoe merely acknowledged Kenji's presence with a curt nod, making no effort to extend a greeting. Kenji sighed inwardly, bracing himself for a long day.

"So, where's our sensei?" Nawaki inquired, scanning their surroundings. "Not here, but probably watching us," Kenji replied. "We need to work together and devise a strategy."

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Tomoe interjected thoughtfully, "Very well, let's get this sorted out already."

Nawaki scoffed, "Hah, trust someone from the Uchiha, considering the shady tactics they're known for. I wouldn't want to trust you."

Tomoe narrowed her eyes, "As if the Senju are any better. Your clan's self-righteousness is insufferable."

Kenji quickly intervened, "Tome, Nawaki! Cut it off already, put aside your clan differences while we're working and work as a team. As much as you might not like each other, we're ninja of Kohana now." He stared down the two genin. "Act like it."

An uneasy silence settled over the trio as they stood, uncertain of what to expect. Abruptly, a voice emanated from behind them, "Genin" Kenji, Nawaki, and Tomoe whirled around to find a tall, imposing figure standing before them – their jonin sensei.

He appraised them with a dispassionate stare before continuing, "Within this forest lies a tower at its center. You have three days to reach it. If you fail to make it, you'll either be dead or consigned to one of the battalions. I'll be waiting," he intoned sternly.

The three genin exchanged anxious glances, unsure how to process their sensei's words. Nawaki, ever the most vocal and expressive of the group, blurted out, "Wait! What do you mean the tower in the middle?" Desperate for clarification, he sought the jonin's attention. But it was too late – their sensei had vanished as abruptly as he had appeared, leaving them in a state of confusion and apprehension.

The Hokage sat in his dimly lit office, the soft glow from a solitary lamp casting intricate shadows on the walls as he gazed at the Hokage Mountain. The faces of the village's previous leaders were carved into the rock face, a constant reminder of the formidable legacy he had inherited. He puffed on his pipe, the sweet aroma of tobacco permeating the air, while his thoughts were consumed with the precarious situation his village faced.

Engulfed in a brutal war on all fronts, the village barely held on. He knew he needed to find a way to strike a decisive blow to turn the tide in their favor, and he believed he had devised the perfect plan.

At the core of his strategy was a new team of genin, youthful shinobi with extraordinary potential and storied backgrounds. Members of the team hailed from a prestigious clan with a long history in the village, and he saw immense promise in them. However, raw talent and lineage alone wouldn't secure victory. The Hokage knew he had to train them to the highest standard, pushing them beyond their limits and forging them into formidable weapons for the village.

As he pondered his plan, the Hokage experienced a blend of concern and determination.

"Serrow!" he called, and in an instant, a nondescript ninja wearing a painted serrow mask materialized before him. The ninja knelt respectfully, awaiting instructions.

The Hokage approached his desk and perused several files scattered across it. "You'll be going light; your role will be sensei for Sekiryuu ranked team, Designation Team One." He discussed each genin, emphasizing their abilities.

"First and foremost, we have Nawaki Senju, an exceptional prodigy with remarkable chakra reserves and potent ninjutsu potential. He has talents in both water and earth and might be able to replicate the Shodai's abilities. It's crucial to protect him or ensure that no other village can exploit his talents," the Hokage said, indicating Nawaki's file.

Next, he pointed to Tomoe Uchiha's file. "Second priority. Her Sharingan and talents in genjutsu and taijutsu make her invaluable. As with Nawaki, prioritize her protection or prevent her from falling into enemy hands."

Finally, the Hokage gestured towards Kenji Izumi's file. "Expendable. He's gifted for his age, and his talents surpass the other two. From what he's shown, he has displayed potential to be another heavy hitter for the village. While he is expendable, he is to be secured if possible."

With a serious gaze, the Hokage addressed Serrow directly. "Train them rigorously and effectively. I'll deal with the clans, but these genin must develop their strength swiftly to survive. Push them to their limits, shape them into the formidable shinobi we require. We cannot afford to waste time."

The Hokage continued, "You'll be preparing for a Mantis Operation. I'll be sending your new team to the northern front at Rice Field as bait, where you'll likely encounter Iwa and Cloud-nin. There, you'll be under Hebi's command. Fox, along with Root, will act as hunters." He took a deep draw from his pipe, the smoke curling around him. "Understood?"

"Yes, Hokage-sama," Serrow responded, rising, determination evident in the ninja's posture.

"Good, you have one month. Train them well," the Hokage instructed, dismissing Serrow with a wave of his hand. As the masked ninja vanished from the office, the Hokage returned to his seat and resumed his paperwork, hoping that the bait would be effective.

"Spread the word about the Senju boy," he commanded, his voice resolute.

"Hai," a voice from the shadows acknowledged, and the room fell silent once more as the Hokage readied himself to set his plan in motion.

Nawaki's voice wavered as the gravity of their situation sank in. "But this is the Forest of Death. Only chuunin and jonin train here."

Unfazed, Tomoe strode toward the forest, determination etched on her face. "Let's go," she declared, ready to tackle the mission head-on. Kenji, the voice of reason, attempted to restrain her. "Hold on, Tomoe. We should plan first," he urged, but she brushed him off and continued her march into the forest.

Before they entered the forest, Kenji tried to assert his authority. "Hey, Uchiha, stop!" he called, but she didn't waver. Growing exasperated, he raised his voice, "Fine, have it your way. HEY, EVIL-EYES, STOP!" Tomoe stopped abruptly, whipping around with her red eyes glaring at him. "Never insult my clan again!" she warned, her voice seething with anger.

Aware that he'd pushed her too far, Kenji quickly tried to defuse the situation. "Alright, but we need to work together, or we'll fail," he reasoned diplomatically.

Nawaki dropped to the ground, laughing, which only escalated tensions further. "I can complete this mission on my own," Tomoe retorted haughtily.

Realizing he needed to regain control before things spiraled out of hand, Kenji interjected, "Stop! We agreed yesterday that we would work together. This is a team mission, and we'll fail unless we all complete it together. Besides, the sooner we finish this, the sooner we can move on. Understood?" He tried to assert his authority.

Tomoe stared at him, and Kenji decided to emphasize his strength. "Plus, I'm stronger than both of you. I've beaten you in nearly everything at the academy. After this mission, if you can beat me, I'll let you lead. Until then, I'm in charge."

Tomoe, still fuming, didn't respond but stood there, awaiting further instructions.

"Evil-eyes! That's so good! Hahaha!" Nawaki cackled, unable to contain his amusement.

"Shut up, twig!" Tomoe snapped, her anger still palpable.

Aware that he needed to redirect their focus, Kenji sought more information about the forest before proceeding. "What can you tell us about this forest?" he asked Nawaki, seeking as much knowledge as possible.

Finally sobering up, Nawaki shared what he knew. "Well, my sister trains here sometimes," he began excitedly. "It's really dangerous and has a big reputation. There are spiders, bears, tigers, snakes, various insects, and more. My sister said it gets more dangerous the further in you go."

Taking this information to heart, Kenji mulled it over before speaking. "Alright, let's form up in the eagle-eye formation. Tomoe, you'll be in the center as our scout. Nawaki, take the left wing, and I'll cover the right. Let's go!" He corralled the genin into action.

"Hey, who made you the leader!" Nawaki interrupted Kenji.

Kenji stared down at Nawaki, "I've kicked your ass for the entire year. And, like I proposed to Tomoe, after this mission if you beat me, you can lead. Fair?"

Nawaki grumbled for a moment, "Fine."

Finally, Kenji and his teammates vanished into the forest, heading toward their objective. He could only hope they were prepared for the challenges that lay ahead. From the information gathered, the Forest of Death was notorious for being a perilous place, home to fearsome beasts. He could only hope that his teammates would remain vigilant, prepare for the worst, and work together as a team if they hoped to complete their mission successfully.

"I hope this place isn't that bad."
