Lya blitzed toward the avatar of the werewolf. In retaliation, the avatar of the werewolf lashed out with his claws. Right before Lya ran straight into his strike, she managed to jump backward.
As Lya landed, she stumbled, nearly falling to the ground. She was slowly realizing that there was no way for her to capitalize on an opening.
It wasn’t that the avatar of the werewolf didn’t leave any--Lya saw his fighting style as full of holes. However, the enhanced senses granted by the mythos of the werewolf allowed the avatar of the werewolf to cover up those weaknesses the moment Lya tried to exploit one.
The avatar of the werewolf leaped on the bar counter, then toward Lya. She backed up as the avatar of the werewolf crashed into the table sundering it into splinters. He pounced toward Lya, but she was easily able to dodge out of the way of his attack.
Sailing past Lya, the avatar of the werewolf impacted the wall. As he did, he clung to it, spun around, and jumped toward Lya again. In response, Lya took rapid steps backward to avoid the attack while also keeping her eyes trained on the avatar of the werewolf.
“You just gonna run?” the avatar of werewolf growled..
Lya didn’t want to run, but she couldn’t think of anything better. Her only saving grace was that her superspeed let her react to anything the avatar of the werewolf threw at her. As it stood, neither side could land a blow on the other.
Lya considered just waiting it out, and hoping Saxon would return. However, she didn’t know how long that would take.
Also, even if both sides were able to react to anything the other threw at them, Lya was still at a disadvantage. If the avatar of the werewolf left himself open to an attack, Lya still likely couldn’t take him out in one hit. On the other hand, Lya’s mythos didn’t increase her durability at all, meaning one well-placed strike could take her out of commission.
The avatar of the werewolf would have to make several mistakes to lose, whereas Lya only needed to make one. That meant a war of attrition wasn’t in Lya’s favor either.
Lya could move fast, but now she needed to think fast.
She backed up some more to create distance. Now that Lya was out of reach, the avatar of the werewolf grabbed a nearby chair and hurled it in her direction.
Once again, Lya was easily able to dodge out of the way, but this gave her an idea. She backed up even further to the other end of the room. This prompted the avatar of the werewolf to throw even more objects.
Chairs, bottles, coat hangers, everything the avatar of the werewolf could grab he immediately sent flying toward Lya.
Eventually, the avatar of the werewolf sunk his claws into a table. That was what Lya was waiting for.
Right as the table left the avatar of the werewolf’s hands, Lya blitzed toward him. In an instant, both combatants were within striking distance. However, at this moment Lya held the advantage.
The table cut off the line of sight of their opponent for both combatants. Lya knew the avatar of the werewolf wasn’t fast enough to move from his current location, so she didn’t need to worry.
On the other hand, the avatar of the werewolf could no longer use his enhanced eyesight to track Lya’s movement. Now he was forced to guess whether Lya would emerge from the table on his left or right.
Taking a chance, the avatar of the werewolf lashed out at his left side. He had guessed wrong. Even if he had struck at his right side, he would have guessed wrong.
Lya emerged from underneath the table, ready to slide tackle the avatar of the werewolf to the ground. He was so focused on deciding between left and right, that he had never stopped to look beneath him.
However, as Lya was about to take down the avatar of the werewolf, she saw his nose twitch. She was now staring down a razor-sharp claw, just inches away from her face.
In a moment of desperation, Lya reached behind her, and fortunately, her palm made contact with the table’s surface. Using all her might, Lya pushed against the table, shoving herself backward.
As Lya rocketed backward, the table she had leveraged began to spin, and lose its forward momentum. Just as Lya came to a stop, the table fell upon her.
The table split in two revealing the avatar of the werewolf, who had leaped after Lya, about to tear her legs apart with his claws. Knowing she couldn’t avoid being hit, Lya spun herself 180 degrees on her back, shifting the target of the attack to her shoulders instead of her legs.
The avatar of the werewolf’s claws dug into Lya. As she forced herself to her feet the claws scraped down her backside. She tried to run but felt a tug on her hair.
“I’ve got your hair!” the avatar of the werewolf exclaimed.
“Then have it!” Lya replied. Thinking quickly, Lya kicked a glass shard off the ground into the air, snatched it with her hands, and cut her hair off to free herself.
Now free, Lya sprinted away, creating enough distance to give herself time to think.
Lya realized she was wrong about how the avatar of the werewolf was able to react to her superspeed. She had thought it was using enhanced sight, but now she realized it was using enhanced smell.
In hindsight, this made more sense considering how neither of the two avatars were surprised by Saxon’s surprise attack despite him being behind the bar and out of sight. The avatar of the werewolf had likely smelled him and alerted his partner.
As the avatar of the werewolf leaped after Lya, she glanced toward the liquor counter and had an idea.

Just as the avatar of the werewolf closed the gap, Lya took off in a blur toward the bar. She began throwing everything she could get her hands on at the avatar of the werewolf.
The avatar of the werewolf managed to catch one of the bottles in his jaws. He crunched down on it and swallowed the liquor as it cascaded down his throat.
“Thanks for the drink,” the avatar of the werewolf said, spitting out the shards of glass.
Lya responded by throwing more alcohol at him. Bottles broke across the avatar of the werewolf, though he showed no real reaction. It got to the point that he had made a game of situation, trying to catch the bottle in his mouth, then crushing them to extract the alcohol inside.
Honestly, Lya didn’t care much if it affected him or not. What she cared about was polluting his surroundings.
“Done already?” the avatar of the werewolf said, noticing that the shelves were now empty.
That meant it was time for Lya to put her theory to the test. Rushing from behind the counter, Lya went to strike the avatar of the werewolf head-on.
The avatar of the werewolf tried to sniff out Lya’s scent but only smelled alcohol. All the different scents that now covered his body had tarnished his sense of smell.
With the avatar of the werewolf now unable to react, Lya’s fist hammered his jaw. Before the avatar of the werewolf could regain his composure, Lya struck him again, this time with a kick to his abdomen.
The avatar of the werewolf struck out randomly, but without his sense of smell, he was forced to guess against a much smarter and more experienced opponent. Lya continued to speed blitz the avatar of the werewolf, whittling away at his vitality.
The avatar of the werewolf began to breathe heavily. It was clear he was discombobulated from all the different scents in the air. Now was the time for Lya to finish him off.
She blitzed toward the avatar of the werewolf. The avatar of the werewolf struck out with his claw, but the attack went wide as Lya came to a full stop. She kicked the back of the avatar of the werewolf’s hand driving his own claws into his stomach.
The avatar of the werewolf clenched his teeth in pain as his blood trickled down his hand. As he doubled over with pain, his neck was left completely open.
Lya struck with a roundhouse kick that exploded across the avatar of the werewolf’s neck. The impact sounded like a gunshot, but the sound was muffled.
Lya felt that the attack hadn’t hit as hard as she expected. She looked at the avatar of the werewolf’s face and saw life still in his eyes. Lya tried to pull back, but it was too late.
The avatar of the werewolf reached toward his neck and grabbed hold of Lya’s foot. Gripping it with all his strength, the avatar of the werewolf began to slam Lya into the ground.
Every time he did, Lya could feel her head slam against the floor. With each impact, the world grew fainter and fainter. Lya could feel the back of her head getting warmer from the blood running down it.
The avatar of the werewolf hoisted Lya in the air and began to spin her around. As he did, Lya found a brief moment of clarity. Digging up whatever willpower was buried deep within her, Lya found the strength to struggle herself out of her shoe.
As Lya pulled away, the momentum from being spun around caused her to be launched into the bartop counter. The back of her head slammed against the cash register. The rattling of coins could be heard as they flew from the register and landed on Lya who was now flat on her back behind the bar.
Stumbling to her feet, Lya reached for a handful of the coins and chucked them at superspeed toward the avatar of the werewolf. The coins spun so rapidly that they cut the air itself. The avatar of the werewolf threw his guard up.
Lya expected the coins to bounce off him, but to her surprise, a few managed to cut his skin. That’s when Lya had an epiphany. The reason why her kick hadn’t dealt as much damage as she had hoped, was because the mythos of the werewolf had another ability she had failed to account for.
Lya recalled how in stories, werewolves were largely unaffected by physical attacks. This was why her attack was unable to finish off the avatar of the werewolf. However, this power didn’t come without a cost.
Lya also remembered that werewolves were notoriously weak to silver. She glanced down and realized that some of the coins she had grabbed were coated in silver. Lya determined that the mythos of the werewolf must be providing its avatar resistance to physical attacks at the cost of rendering him weak to silver.
As the coins whizzed by, the avatar of the werewolf wasted no time in resuming his assault. He leaped into the air intent on diving behind the bar and ripping Lya apart. However, what he didn’t anticipate was for Lya to already be on her feet ready for an attack.
While the avatar of the werewolf was still in the air, Lya used her superspeed to run up the empty shelves and leap toward him. Lya raised her hand which now had her sock in it that she had stuffed full of silver coins and slammed the sock across the avatar of the werewolf’s face.
The attack sent the avatar of the werewolf rocketing into the boxing ring in the center of the establishment.
Pushing himself to his feet, the avatar of the werewolf tried to ready himself, but he wasn’t fast enough. An orange blur blitzed into the ring, as Lya slammed the silver coin-filled sock across his chest.
As Lya rocketed past the avatar of the werewolf, she turned around to face him and slingshotted herself off the ropes of the boxing ring. An onslaught of attacks rained down upon the avatar of the werewolf as Lya--which to him was just a blur--continued to bounce around the ring.
The avatar of the werewolf tried to guard, but it was pointless. Lya never struck the same area twice, so she was impossible to predict.
Eventually, Lya ricocheted off the ropes, and rocketed toward the avatar of the werewolf, but rather than strike came to a complete stop. The avatar of the werewolf now had his chest to the mat and was out cold.
His body slowly reverted to his humanoid form.
Lya opened up her sock and dumped the coins inside onto the unconscious avatar of the werewolf. “Keep the change you filthy animal.”
As Lya was rummaging through the avatar of the werewolf’s pockets, she looked over at the door to see Saxon come in.
Saxon breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Lya had won her fight. “Seems things went well for you.”
“Well I’m all banged up, meanwhile there isn’t a scratch on you,” Lya replied.
Saxon chuckled, knowing he was knocking on death’s door before he healed himself.
“How’d it go?” Lya asked.
“Not great,” Saxon lamented. “Person I was chasing was the avatar of the vampire. We got into a fight, but she managed to break away.
While I was chasing after her, someone shot her out of the sky. She plummeted into an alleyway, and by the time I got there she was dead, but there were no injuries on her. Checked the body, but everything on her had been taken, including those files she picked up.”
“Well we can have Mori take a look at that body, and see if she can glean any information,” Lya remarked. “Meanwhile, we can take a look at this.”
Lya pulled out a folded-up, crumpled piece of paper from the avatar of the werewolf’s pocket and opened it up. “Kenji’s report mentioned that every high-ranking avatar in the Chimera family always carries one of these when they go out.”
Saxon hopped into the ring and looked over Lya’s shoulder at the paper.
Both detectives were looking at a map of the underground tunnels used as the Chimera family’s main base of operation. They had found the last piece of the puzzle.
