Prologue

The dawn was silent, the type of silence that causes one to scream or shout to assure that things were fine, to hold the madness at bay. The sounds of mischief, the clang of metal. None were to be heard that day, none but the gentle heaves and gurgles of heroes gone.

Enber observed the land, Ash scattered the fields, and blood spattered its soil. “It cannot be, it cannot be,” he rattled to himself. He scurried over slumping mounds of bodies, and hurriedly rushed and scampered to the center of the Chaos. “avoid the eyes, he prattled as he caught the familiar garb and medals adorning familiar faces. “Friends.” he whispered. He let his feet carry him forward.

In all estimations, the devastations before him were not to be so. “according to the scribes,” he paused as he noticed a disturbing figure in black rising from a dead body. The being turned slowly and spoke with a voice unlike any heard in all the lands of Halmauth and her mighty mountains. “You will do fine, young man” he smiled, then smirked.. and finally sighed “there must be someone to report the closing of a chapter. The ending of an age. To think that it would be done on the dawn of Griezfell, tell me merchant, what happens when the world ends? The chiseled man stammered, “you, you know what happened? You.. you know what is going on,” the figure enthusiastically nodded. “Of course” Enber hesitated before speaking,. the silence dragged on as the figure sat as if waiting for the man to speak, Enber broke the silence. ”You speak to me on chapters closed and ages spent. It is obvious if the world ends, there is nothing.” The being jerked as if slightly annoyed and Enber felt a sharp popping in his brain as if it were about to burst. He gasped, and instinctually held his hands to his head as the wave of pain grew Violent.. The Being continued speaking “in all endings, there must be an unspoken promise of a beginning. He paused, as if relishing his wisdom. “Both exist and no man knows when one ends and one begins. The figure walked toward the man and violently smacked him across the face “what I just said was a play on words, to amuse myself, you however, you must be ready for the judgement they will place on your innocent head”. Enber groaned and peered into the eyes that looked back. They looked.. pain suddenly blurred his vision as the figure smote him again. The darkened figure suddenly stepped back and assumed his earlier demeanor and laughed. “haaaaaa haaaaaa the rolling laugh waved through the land and caused Enbers skin to twitch in irritation. The laughter seemed true, but there was a mark of something else there, regret

“Tell them what you saw today. Tell them of the slaying of the 3 nations. Tell them of the body of Salestria silenced and charred, tell them Stolvrin the great though he fought admirably died before landing a second strike, he looked at me and spoke the next words hollowly as if biting back a, wave or, ocean of emotion, tell them that Marchon the noble slayed himself.

That today heroes fell, and the lauded prophecy failed“. He looked amused again and rattled a weak imitation of a laugh. ”It is beautiful, is it not, that Fate's hands can be guided, ah yes, they will hate that. For as much as men love the idea of destiny and good prevailing, the thought of choice, actual choice, terrifies them, and I would not blame their fear, for its hands led us to this outcome.“ He looked at Enber and spoke gravely, “I must depart”. and with that, the figure warped, as if fighting against itself, then burst violently before the man's eyes.

Enber was left replaying questions in his mind., who was that man? how would the nations react, knowing the Great prophecy was false. “Surely there will be great chaos” he croaked. He pondered the most fearsome question intensely as his knees sunk deeper into the reddened battlefield. He felt the familiar first rays of the sun touch him as if mocking him. An old hymn crossed his mind. “The sun always rises, the sun always set. life continues “. but the look in the dark figures eyes, The deaths of the chosen heroes along with the now false prophecy made him consider the words once more, this time deeply. ”What happens when the world ends?”
