Chapter 1 – The Nameless Duo

Chapter 1 - The Nameless Duo

Long ago, the world was originally separated into multiple ones.

Each world was described as a continuous calm stream that flowed endlessly from one event to another. These worlds contained an undisturbed passage of history that grew into their own unique realities, an endless current of development and growth.

And although these worlds flowed and moved in different directions, they all came from the same source. An origin that is depicted as a divine body of water, undisturbed by mortal hands or their creations.

Until one day, a small and unassuming bird landed at the water’s edge and took a sip out of it.

That small action created a ripple, reverting throughout all the worlds and creating the first waves. And thus, the bird introduced chaos into the numerous realities, causing disorder and irregularities throughout all worlds.

The bird saw what it had done and realized its mistake. Even though it was only a tiny creature, it forced itself to drink all the waters of creation until there was nothing left in the divine body of water. As the streams that originated from it died off and chaos disappeared with them, the bird closed its eyes as it perished from the action of drinking all of existence.

Due to its final act, the bird became the outer boundary of the last world. Its sacrifice took away chaos in exchange for stealing the potential and development of all existence.

This last world soon came to be known as [Wren], named after the small bird who stole away its future.

“So you’re telling me that our world was created because some bird got thirsty?”

The one who spoke just now was a young woman with silver eyes and a beautiful appearance. It was hard to determine her age, but most would agree that she could be considered a young adult. She was sitting alone at a campsite with a warm fire burning and crackling in front of her.

“Who knows?” It was another voice that replied to her. “These types of creation myths tend to get loose with the details without much thought put into them. The point of the story is that the bird made a great sacrifice so that all the inhabitants of this world would never encounter pain or suffering ever again.”

“Really?” She tilted her head in confusion. “How exactly does what it did count as a sacrifice. It sounds like to me that the bird made things worse by messing with the divine body of water even more. Seriously, what kind of idiot comes to the conclusion that drinking all of existence is the solution to introducing chaos into the numerous worlds?”

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

“Do you seriously want to debate theology with me right now?”

“I just think it's stupid.”

“Well, I’m not gonna argue with you about that. Anyway, that’s not the end of the story. After the bird drank in all of existence and perished, the water of creation began to settle inside of its stomach until five deities were born from it. They soon became known as Martial God, Demon God, Lost God, Magic God, and Heaven God. Each deity took their names from the people they ruled and established five nations named after themselves.”

“So since we’re traveling through the Magic Nation, that means that this is the domain of the Magic God?”

“Exactly. The Magic Nation is split into multiple territories and domains, inhabited by numerous races from every other nation. Humans are the most numerous inhabitants, despite not being a magically inclined species. Even so, the human race has an advantage over the others due to their short lifespans and drive to improve themselves. Because of that, they have established several famed Guilds and Academies that contain vast amounts of knowledge. If you desire to find a way to restore your lost memories, they are your best bet as to how you may accomplish that goal.”

“My memories, huh…”

“I already told you that there’s nothing I can do about that. Even though we made a contract with one another, there are limits to what powers I can bestow upon you. In order to rediscover your past, you will have to seek a different avenue to pursue.”

She grew silent as her thoughts began to wander. Although she was interested in learning more about who she was and why she apparently lost her memories, it wasn’t as if it was something that she desired above all others. It was simply that she had nothing better to do that she decided to pursue this goal.

If not for her companion and benefactor, she might not have even been aware that there was a way of doing so. Even if there were no clues as to her memories here, she could always travel to the other nations and see if there was a way to figure something out.

She sighed. “Fine, I’ll go and check out these places you mentioned.”

“Sure, but there’s something that we need first.”

“Hm?”

“Since you lost your memories, it’s going to be a bit difficult to introduce yourself if you don’t have a name. So why not pick one now while we still have the chance to come up with one?”

“A name?” She pondered over it for a while. “I suppose that makes sense. Then how about I go by Meari (echo) since I don’t know my true name yet.”

“That sounds good, but how about you change it so that it’s spelled as [Mary] instead?”

“I guess that’s fine.” A thought suddenly came to her. “Speaking of which, you never told me your name even though we’ve been traveling together all this time?”

“Me?” Her companion gave a slight chuckle. “I suppose that’s been a long time coming now. To be honest, I forgot my real name as well. But if you want something to call me, you can refer to me as [Text].”

And thus, the girl named Mary and her companion Text began their journey through this world called Wren.
