Chapter 1: First Contact

Love has a way of reaching out more than one might expect. At first it might be a peck of the cheek, or the holding of the hands, or the leaning of the shoulders. But as their love grows, their relationships gets deeper and more intimate. Sooner or later their love blossoms and they will commit to each other wholly, the marriage bells ringing above their heads in signification of that.

Then why? Why is it so hard to talk to this woman? It's been a week since we started dating and I don't even have the courage to talk to her! We mind as well be strangers at this point.

I look up from my cubicle and take a peek in Myra's direction. She's deep in focus at the work in hand, so much so that she hasn't moved an inch in 30 minutes. Wow, she really is studious.

But at this pace, I'm never going to able to say a single word to her. She might lose interest in me and say something like:

You can't even talk to a girl? I cannot be with such a cowardly man. Let's break up.

I pull my hair in frustration and burrow my head into my desk. What am I to do? There has to be opportunity sooner or later.

"Myra, here all the documents that you need for the wine ordering at the event."

Wait, I completely forgot that Myra is our team leader this time around. Yes! I can use this to my advantage.

Part of my job as a project planner is submitting paperwork so that the event goes as smoothly as possible. But before that, the team leader has to sift through all the documents in order to make sure that it is accurate. I can use this to communicate with Myra. I have 30 page packet due today that covers all the entertainment that will provided for the event. This includes music, dancing, and games. On the 17th page, in the middle of the packet, I'll leave a little note for Myra.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

Hi Myra, is it okay that we hire a jazz band for the event coming up instead of our usual DJ?

That Hi Myra counts as communication doesn't it?! Instead of talking face to face, I can just use that note to greet her covertly, without any kind of risk of rejection. This is the perfect plan. Now I just to finish the packet that I've been procrastinating over all week.

...

It's 4 o'clock and I'm done with my packet. Now all I have to do is submit it to Myra with the note inside. But when I approach her desk, she isn't there. Her cubicle is empty.

"Oh, you looking for Myra? She's been in the break room for about a hour. You'll find her there," her neighboring coworker explains.

Huh? Why would Myra be in the break room for so long? Is she slacking off? No. There is no way someone like Myra would do something like that.

I enter the breaker room only to find her sitting at one of the table, scrolling through her phone.

Eh? She really is slacking off! I didn't know she was this way.

"Hey Myra, here are all the documents that you need for entertainment at the event next week." I remark.

But she doesn't answer. She sits still in her chair, looking down at her lap. An awkward silence bridges between us and my heart starts to beat in my chest.

Huh? Did I say something wrong? Why is she like this? Did she find out about my plan? Is she mad at me for not talking to her all week? Ah, that must be it. She's probably mad that I disregarded her even though we've been dating. I should apologize.

"H-Hey Myra, I j-just wanted to say that I'm-m so-"

She grabs my arm by the sleeve and pulls me in close. So close that I can hear the intake of her breath. The heat from her touch rushes through my arm, causing me to grow red.

"C-can you please h-help me with this. The printer isn't working," She whispers in my ear. "I-I've been trying to upload it through my phone, but it isn't working."

For a moment I'm too shocked to answer. I can barely make out my words as I take in her beautiful yet stunning appearance.

"Y-yea sure."

Well I guess my whole plan backfired. I had to talk to her anyway...
