Chapter 08-04
It took four long hours to get everyone out of the temple chamber. Alex wondered if the inhabitants had another more accessible exit but didn’t want to take the time to look for it. He wanted to get everyone home.
Once clear of the temple chamber which consisted of having to carry some of the children down the narrow shaft, they made their way up the elevator to the entrance building. Obsidian road up with the first half. Seven people including herself packed into the elevator car. This left six people to ride up with Alex.
Top side everyone reacted like they had been locked in a dark dungeon for an extended period of time. Even though it was night the moon was bright, and they sucked in the fresh air.
“What’s that all about?” Alex asked Obsidian pointing at the ex-prisoners.
“I get it. The more I think about it, the more I can remember. It was like being behind a shroud, no control and most of the time no idea what was going on. What you can see, you don’t want any part in.” Obsidian explained.
“Damn.” Alex said solemnly.
For a truck that was meant to seat eight people it was surprisingly easy to cram fourteen people inside especially given that several of them were children. The miner that had been inhabited by Colvontra sat in the seat behind Obsidian who was doubled up in the passenger seat with an eight-year-old little girl.
“Marcus is it?” Alex said sparing him a second’s glance, but quickly turned his eyes back to the road.
“Yes sir.” Marcus said with a curt nod.
“Do you remember anything?” Alex asked.
“Bits. Tiny bits here and there. I remember that I was tracking a narrow vein of Uranium and when it terminated, I looked up to see that shaft that we all came down from. I decided to climb up and investigate. I found that temple thing and there was a large hovering shining crystal. My mining suit began to malfunction, and I was forced to deactivate the respirator mask. The last thought I had when I was still alone in my mind was that I was going to be a rich man, one way or another.” He said with an uneasy smile.
“Anything else?” Alex asked.
“Flashes of that Colvontra guy bringing in the other miners,” he motioned around the car, “Then once they were taken, he sent them after children because they would get the most life out of their malleable bodies. His words, not mine.” He explained.
“That’s crazy.” Alex said shaking his head, “And what did we learn?”
“Don’t touch large floating crystals?” He said with an upturn in his voice like he was asking a question.
“Don’t touch large floating crystals!” Alex said sternly.
“Especially if they are glowing.” Obsidian added holding up a finger. The girl sharing the seat with her was using her for comfort.
“Right!” Alex said.
They pulled into the town and drove straight to the town hall. He parked in front of the huge old house’s front stoop diagonally across the street. As hard as he could he started to pound on the horn to alert as many people as he could to their arrival.
“You should have done that as soon as we got into the town limits.” Obsidian said shaking her head.
“I know.” Alex said with a huff in a defeated tone.
The mayor and all of the other town officials that were in the town hall spilled outside into the night. Alex opened the driver’s door and lifted himself up to stand on the door frame so that he could look over the roof of the truck.
“I think we found some people that you were looking for!” He said loudly.
With a tap on the top of the truck’s roof he signaled for everyone to get out. Every door on the vehicle opened and the dozen people spilled out into the streets.
People began to gather. Families were reunited in tear filled hugs. Obsidian and Alex looked at each other in triumph. They jumped down from the truck and walked up to the mayor.
“I don’t know how to thank you.” Eric, the mayor, said holding out his hand offering Alex a handshake.
“You’re welcome.” Alex said shaking his hand firmly, “I’m just happy to see all of the warm faces and reunited families.”
“I could pay out a cash reward.” Eric said followed by a new notification appearing in his vision.
-Life is about choices.
-You have been awarded points three times that have included both Heroic and Villainous actions.
-At this time, you may choose to continue as a hero, with the potential penalties of the additional Villainous points. (It may be difficult to get specific hero missions if your villainous points exceed a specified percentage gap with your heroic points.)
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
-At this time, you may choose to become a villain, though your actions are heroic you have performed villainous actions. Choosing this path will offer a onetime conversion from Hero to Villain. When accepting this option all heroic points will be converted to Villainous points. Half of Hero tier points will be converted to Villain tier points.
-At this time, you may choose to embrace life as an Anti-Hero. Your points will be shifted to Anti-Hero points. You will continue to gain on the Hero Tier. When becoming an anti-hero, it is unsure how people will respond to you in a given situation. During payout there is a multiplier that will be selected at random that can land anywhere from 25% to 300%. This is completely random and is chosen at the time of payout.
Alex looked at the notification for a moment. Before everything changed in the game and it became a world the Anti-hero system was only a few patches old. Many people were starting the path, but there wasn’t a whole lot of information on how things worked. Alex had heard that there was a third meter used to measure the Anti-hero’s status, but he hadn’t had a clue as to how he unlocked it. And there it was. He chose the third option that was offered. He embraced the life as an Anti-hero.
-You have chosen to truly become an Anti-hero.
-All notifications have been updated to reflect this life choice.
-+100 Anti-Hero Points (I do things my way, whatever that may be.) [Consider this a sign on bonus]
After the conversion and with the new bonus he had one hundred and seventy Anti-Hero Points. Before he moved on to some of his other notifications he focused on the mayor.
“The cash would be a wonderful reward for our work here today.” Alex said. He smiled but his face was hidden behind his mask.
“Of course.” Mayor Eric said with a nod. He handed over a needle chip and with that the mission was complete.
-You have completed a Mission!
-Missing Children
-15,000xp

Alex was very pleased results from the completion of the mission. If he did the math right, he had just earned another three levels. There wasn’t long before midnight and he would know for sure where his standings were.
“I have contacted the agency for the Trouble at the Uranium mine Mission. They have indicated that a report has been filed listing you as the person of resolution. You should be getting a completion notification shortly.” Function pipped up in Alex’s ear.
“Thank you function. Could you go ahead and map out the path to the crash site? We will be taking care of that next, but I do think we are going to get a night’s rest first.” Alex said with triumph.
“Yes sir.” Function said.

Alex closed the second mission completion notification. He accepted the deposit. They had made quite the haul of money, but they were a long way from being able to do things like buy a new HQ, and Alex still owed Obsidian a chuck of stitches from the upgrades she had paid for at the factory.
“How about we go get some sleep?” Alex asked. Any injury that he had received was long healed by his regenerative ability, but his body still ached.
“I thought that you would never ask.” Obsidian said in a swooning tone.
They retired to the hotel room that they had reserved. He felt that when they left Alex felt like he was going to miss the little room. Waiting patiently, it felt like it took forever for the midnight notification to appear in his vision.

“That’s weird.” Obsidian said after she spent a few minutes looking at her phone. She looked up from the device and to Alex.
“What’s that?” Alex asked looking away from his own awesome notification windows.
“Well in the past I’ve always gotten power points on the odd levels. One, three, five, seven, nine, you know?” She said.
“Yeah, sure.” Alex said with an understanding nod.
“Well I just got levels eleven through fourteen and I got a power point for each.” She explained with a look that conveyed both concern and excitement in a terrifying blend.
“I can understand that you might be worried, but this is a good thing. Just think about how powerful you can now become.” Alex said with an assuring smile, “I mean this world is on the brink of change and look at it this way, maybe before long you won’t need me anymore.”
“That may be true, but you are always going to need me to save your ass.” She said with a smile.
“I saved you this time.” Alex said sharply.
“One time doesn’t change things much, talk to me when you’ve saved me a couple of times.” She smiled and went to her phone.
