"Ugh, where am I?" a voice said
Looking around, the owner of the voice discovered that complete darkness surrounded them.
"Did I really die? I can't believe this. There's nothing special for the end of a life? It's all just black?"
Sitting in disbelief, the person looked down at their stomach and noticed it was pure white. Checking out their arms and legs, they realized it wasn't just their stomach but their entire body that was this pure white light in the middle of all the darkness.
"I thought I was supposed to head towards a light, not become one."
As if waiting for those words, an orb of blue light appeared out of thin air.
"That's a common misconception. If you see the light in the first place, then you won't die. That's why people even know about it to begin with."
Flinching, the white figure looked around but soon realized the voice came from the blue orb.
"Are you supposed to be an angel? Sorry I've never really been religious, but I thought you guys had likes wings and stuff?"
"You can call me whatever you prefer, but we don't actually have a title. If anything, I'm closer to what humans think gods are."
"Gods? Am I going to heaven then? Or is this black void where I'm spending the rest of eternity?"
"You can stay here if you'd like, but you probably want to hear me out before making that decision."
The blue orb started flying around and a giant screen appeared out of nowhere. Displayed on the screen was a world in ruins. No, it wouldn't be right to call those ruins. There was nothing, nothing at all.
"Does this look familiar to you?" The blue orb asked.
"Not necessarily? I promise I didn't do it." The figure replied jokingly.
"We'll see about that."
The blue orb flew over the white figure, causing a book to fall in front of him.
"How about this? Familiar?"
Reaching for the book, the figure noticed a familiar title.
< The End of Existence >
"This.. Yes, this is familiar. It's my novel, but I never printed any physical copies. Where did you get this? You know this isn't legal right?"
"So that's familiar but this.." the blue orb went back to the screen, "this isn't familiar to you?"
The figure stood up and got closer to the screen. It didn't look familiar at first glance, but after realizing the orb showed him the novel for a reason, a memory popped into his mind. The screen seemed to be displaying one of many endings he had come up with for his novel.
"You seem to realize what it is."
"Unless I'm not mistaken, it's what I wrote in my notepad about a possible ending for my novel. What does that have to do with me dying though?"
The blue orb once again flew around and multiple screens of the same scenario popped up on all of them. Worlds with absolutely nothing.
"It's a mystery. Even we don't have the power to do things like this so freely, but you, a human, wrote a mediocre story and it became like this."
The white figure started to get nervous at those words, hoping the orb wasn't hinting at what he thought. He read enough novels in his life to see where this could be going.
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
"We're unsure of the cause, but we can't let this continue. So I have a proposal for you."
After the blue orb flew around a little more, a piece of paper fell into the hands of the figure.
"Now let me start by saying that you are no longer Cleo Novalie. All things considered, you died. If you choose to accept, we're going to have to transfer your soul into another body."
"Okay wait, hold on." The white figure started waving his hands around, interrupting the orb.
"You haven't explained anything to me. Are you saying I did this? And what do you need my help for?"
"It's all on the paper, but so be it. We don't know the reason, but everything you've created in your story has become real. Well, almost. An entirely separate space was created where the contents of your novel are 'real'. While they aren't part of our universe at the moment, if for any reason the space opens itself up, there will be a merge."
A table and two chairs appeared out of nowhere once again, and the blue orb went and hovered over one. Taking the hint, the figure went over and sat down on the other end.
"Normally, that wouldn't be an issue. It isn't the first time something like this has happened, and it definitely won't be the last. However, this situation is especially tricky."
The screens from earlier moved behind the blue orb as it continued
"Frankly, we can't solve it. It requires a decent amount of power just to interfere with a world normally, but the ones you created are resistant, and we can't figure out why."
"Let me stop you there" the figure interrupted once again
"I didn't create my story thinking it would, what did you say, become real? So I'm sorry but this isn't my fault. Also, I haven't written the end of my novel so I don't see how any of this has happened. Sure it was a possibility but I doubt it's the one I would've chosen. Any problems you think might happen don't even exist."
"I understand why you think that. Let me show you."
A few screens behind the orb changed back into the image a vibrant world, while others stayed completely desolate.
"While a majority of these worlds haven't been attacked yet. This problem is already effecting worlds trapped in the separate space. So whether you wanted that ending or not, it's already starting. I'm sure you're aware of what you created, correct?"
The figure gulped at those words, thinking back on the main antagonist of the story. While it might not sound like much, he created a creature that looked like the alien from the movie Alien. He thought it was so cool back in highschool, and he added tons of abilities, making it extremely powerful. It also didn't really have a motive, it's only goal was slaughter. It just wanted to keep getting more powerful, not caring if all the life in the universe was wiped out.
Sure, there were limitations, but thinking back, he wasn't sure how he was going to make the main characters defeat such an enemy. It's the whole reason he even thought of an ending where it won and everything was destroyed.
"To give you a clear picture of what will happen if we don't deal with this creature, just look around."
After the blue orb said that, he looked around and saw what seemed like millions of different screens fill the black void. All of them had one thing in common, a desolate world with absolutely nothing on it. All the screens disappeared after a while, but the shock remained.
"That's why we need your help. You know your story better than anyone else and hopefully have a way to stop it. Honestly, even I at full power can't defeat this enemy you created if it's gets too strong. And if someone removes all the beings like me from existence, then that becomes a bigger problem than erasing a few million worlds. We monitor every life, every death, every world, and every universe."
The white figure knew he had to say something, but wasn't sure what he could do about this. It's not like he didn't create ways to defeat the alien. He just wasn't sure how he was going to make the main cast capable of it. The weaknesses were so little, and the ones he did have were so hard to overcome that it would be impossible to do it unless you had the information already.
After what seemed like ages, he finally responded.
"I don't know if I can do this. It's not like it's impossible, but for me? I started writing this story in highschool as a hobby. I'm just a normal man besides that. There's no way I can do this."
"You're wrong. You aren't normal anymore."
The blue orb floated over and started glowing radiantly. After a few seconds, a woman took its place. She reached down and touched the white figure on his head and a bright blue light filled the void.
"You aren't Cleo Novalie anymore. I won't say I believe in you, but you're our only option. I gave you a choice as a sign of respect, but the answer was decided the moment I brought you here. No matter if it was unintentional, you created this problem and are now the best bet to fix it. We will help in any way we can, but you're on your own going into this place."
The white figure screamed in pain. He reached towards the hand touching his head, trying to remove it, but with no luck. The woman just continued talking.
"Sorry, this process hurts quite a bit. It isn't easy to send a soul into another body, especially separate from our universe. I still need to ask you to do one thing. Think of the character you want to possess. It has to be someone who should exist in this place. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to choose someone capable of stopping your monster."
Though this whole situation felt unfair, he started thinking of the characters he created. His first thought was obviously the protagonist, but he didn't want to ruin this by choosing the option that wasn't a guarantee.
Trying to think through the scorching pain, he realized something. Although he had the antagonist created, he never had an opportunity to fully involve him in his novel. Most of the scenes where it showed up were quick flashes to let the readers know something bigger was at play. So why was it so fleshed out in this new reality?
After realizing this, he remembered his notebook. He kept everything in there related to the story. Ideas, characters, places, background information. Everything. Even if it wasn't in the story, he still technically gave them life on paper.
Deciding to take a gamble, he yelled out a name.
"Nova! Give me... make me Nova!"
The scorching pain got even worse, but after a while it faded. The woman took her hand off his head and smiled.
"Good choice, Nova"
He looked up at the woman and noticed her dark blue hair and eyes. Her smile was incredibly beautiful. Looking behind her, he noticed a large pair of wings.
"So you are an angel" he couldn't help but say sarcastically
The woman just chuckled
"We'll speak soon, Nova. I wish you luck and safe travels. Remember, everything depends on you. In a literal sense."
Before he could say anything else, she reached out and flicked his forehead. His body went flying backwards into the darkness, but eventually a light appeared and he got sucked in. His back slammed against what felt like a wall, but there was surprisingly no pain. Opening his eyes, he noticed two teenage boys standing over him.
"We told you not to come back! You fucking freak!"
... What?
