-Day 1-
By the gods. Madness! What had gone wrong?! This shouldn't happen! Everything aligned perfectly! The demon that had been offered up as a material for his work was the perfect vessel, and the beast they summoned was highly refined. All of it, up in flames due to the unknown. It frustrated him to no ends. And what could possibly have caused the obedience contract to fail? Insufficient juice? Incompatibility between beast and vessel? Faulty equipment? It frustrated and terrified him to no end. He had performed this summoning tens of times before, why did it all go wrong now?!
Nonetheless, he didn't particularly care about these two disciples of his, but they were important for his success! This was a complete blunder for the Arch Summoner Maximillian Fenton! This was a high-stakes job. It wasn't every day that one would come across an exiled demon, let alone being able to subdue and keep it alive.
And as the cherry on top, a demon attuned with an affinity for the light magic! An absolute rarity! Was this why the summoning failed? It was the only anomaly in this situation. The only difference between now and previously. Or maybe the beast that had been summoned was too powerful? Maybe a mixture of both?
Regardless, what mattered now was his life. Luckily, this mansion had been abandoned many years ago. Nobody else would be in danger from the beast for now. Thank the gods for that. The Arch Summoner luckily managed to make it out unscathed, despite the demon managing to dodge the only decadron he had on him. And an expensive decadron it was! But the beast didn't attack him for some reason. Was it abiding by the contract he made and not hurting him because of it? Ah, questions after questions left unanswered...
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
No matter what, it was an existence of the likes which he hadn't seen before. All shadow beasts he had summoned and observed were terrifying creatures, but one of free will more so than others. For the first time he had seen one in it's unbridled fury. Shadows had engulfed the host entirely, creating a mist and cloaking of pure darkness. The eyes of the demon had turned from the beautiful blue to a deep red when possessed by the beast, and long lean ears sprouted from the already horned head. Black fangs formed to compliment the figure of the demon, and the blurred movements of the extreme speed of the monster surprised even him. The beast did not even bother to use it's claws against them, which actually made him wonder even further why.
The nobles who paid Fenton would not be happy to hear how terribly wrong everything had gone here. He swore, this wasn't his fault, but nobles don't care about trivial things, such as who is to blame so long as they themselves aren't blamed.
He could make it to town if he hurried. The beast seemed to tire after having been summoned, so mayhaps it would make the mansion it's domain for the time being. The building was located on the very edges of the city, a fair bit into the forest. Maybe it wouldn't even attack the town of Elisande.
Regardless, a guild would need to subjugate it as soon as possible. To protect his remaining honor was a priority right now. If word got loose that Arch Summoner Maximillian Fenton left the threads of his work open it would be nothing short of an embarrassment!
