My second life
Reborn in ashes

Reborn in ashes

While I train with my spear and magic for 3 weeks to get stronger and prepare to enroll in magic school with Mia, the world is plagued by problems that I am unaware of. But they are by no means uninteresting.

The winter will ravage my village. I live in a small human village on the boarder of the kingdom. I am a Half-elf with ash grey skin and I am 17 in human years. Recently, we have been experiencing a bandit problem. Every ten days a group of armed bandits comes by and demands 10 silver coins or half the food we produce and the winter is coming. I need to stop this or the village will starve. It would be nice to graduate from magic school and not have to start in 3 weeks. I could protect this village. The only spells I know are both first-level spells, and they are neither for combat nor scaring. I will talk with some of the town folk to come up with a solution. As I step outside of my house I see a person in fancy clothing, armed with armor and weapons standing in the middle of the town. He seems very confused about what to do. He is around my age, maybe a bit younger. I step up to him.

I say with a smirk on my face: "Hi, how can I help you? Oh my mighty highness."

He says a bit more confused: "Oh, finally somebody talks to me. I was a bit unsure who was in charge of this town. I am here to deal with the bandits. "

I say with a face filled with concern: "And who are you?"

He says proudly: "I am Sir Sunas. The first son of the house of Sunas. And if I may ask, what is your name?"

I say with a smile: "I am Duath. You should follow me, oh noble man who can solve our problems. I was planning to discuss this with the folks people and with you at my side we can go straight to the village elders."

He says: "Perfect, you are exactly the person I was looking for. Tell me where the elders are."

We talk to the elders and decide that an attack would be a wise idea. Because they are only a small group of bandits, around 5 people. Sir Sunas is educated in the arts of war and strategy. He brought a bunch of spears and two swords. In the evening, he begins training the villagers in their use. For some reason he decided that living in my house for 10 days is a good idea. We talk a lot and he seems pretty calm and fun to be around. On the second day of training he asks me to be his second in command and as a payment he can teach me how to use a sword. So I train in the morning in the ways of using a sword. While training under Sir Sunas, I realized he is an intelligent and competent individual. Now I am sure we will win. In the last days before the bandits will attack he becomes a bit more silent. In the evening, he asks me if I'd like to be his second in command even after this quest. He could give me a nicer house and gold. And we could help more villages with similar issues like this.

I say: "Yes, but not directly after this quest. I need to finish mage school first but after this I will come back if that is acceptable."

He says: " Sure, you are exactly the person I was looking for. A pragmatic person who is a bit sarcastic to keep me entertained. But first we need to win tomorrow.

I say while smiling: "With you as our leader, we are sure to win."

He says while smiling: "No matter what happens, of course my second in command will have played the biggest role in this fight, with his sword skill. We are sure to win."

"I like nobles because they are so used to getting complimented that they are very terrible at it and always accidently compliment themselves." I say with a smirk on my face.

I became a pretty skilled sword fighter in those 10 days. And so the morning came and Sir Sunas equipped everyone with spears and me with my sword. It was a one-handed sword. But what we didn´t expect was that the bandits had gathered more people. They were around 20 riding bandits and 10 on foot. It was a massacre. Half the village died including Sir Sunas.

One of the bandits said: " Let that be a reminder that nothing can save you except paying. And trusting some stupid rich kid is a terrible idea. Maybe we should take this elf as payment for their foolery." He points at me. "Even though he's just a dark elf. And burn down this village. And send one person to the next village to tell them what happens when you don't pay. You die. "

At this point I was so over it but I survived the battle and was tied up. There was nothing I could do that would solve anything. They put me on one of their horses and took me outside the village. While I cried, I heard the villagers screaming and saw bright lights in the village. As I sat in my cage, something occurred to me in the night. I want revenge. They should all burn eternally for this crime against intelligent life. I know how to form a pact with the demons to achieve more power. By cutting open my finger cup, I begin drawing a pentagram.

I say: "Oh demons of the deep dark, I seek vengeance on those who destroy the lives of ordinary people. Please give me your blessing to destroy those who oppose me. I will not worship the gods of peace and instead seek vengeance. I will serve the people who got abandoned from society, and grant them vengeance and freedom. Oh please burst my chains."

I snapped out of consciousness and as I regained my senses, I found myself in the bandit camp. Everything had turned to ashes. Black flames are still burning, but there are no bandits to be seen, alive or dead. As if this was only a forest fire that burned down some bushes.

In my head a voice says: "Set off on your journey. And seek for freedom and revenge."

I stumble to the nearby river to wash my face. As I see my reflection I realize that my eye colour has become dark red, probably because of the ritual. And my magic capability has increased dramatically. I must only hope that no one in the capital knows about this ritual and its effects. Also I must inform the family of Sir Sunas of his death, what an exhausting mission! Maybe I can recover his corpse. I go back to the village and the corpse is still there. I must haste myself to go to the capital before the corpse rots away. I should try out my new high level magic for that.

I say: "Fallen wolf come to my aid. Ghost wolf."

A large ghost wolf appears in front of me. I put the corpse of Sir Sunas on his back and sat myself behind him. And so I began riding to the capital to deliver Sir Sunas´s corpse and enroll in the magic academy. In order to get there as early as possible, I rode day and night. The wolf was so terrifying that many people avoided me. After the third day I finally began to realize my need to sleep, drink and eat completely vanished. But that feels somehow wrong, maybe I at last stopped being human and elf. And became something different. On the fourth day I finally arrived. Before I go into the city I will go take a bath in a nearby river. I took a bath and then entered the city. I asked a couple of people in the city where the house of Sir Sunas is, but most people avoided me after this question. After some time I asked a girl with dark brown hair. She was walking through the town with a boy with white hair. The city sure is weird. I ask her how to get there and after she explains it to me, she tells me that I should really consider whether it is worth it. I will obviously still go. I must tell them what happened to their son. I go to the house and tell a butler that I must speak to the owner of this house about their son. After some time, they led me inside. I show them the corpse and they don't make a face. As if they didn't care.

They say: "Finally, he's dead now, throw out this commoner."

I was thrown out on the street with the corpse. I sat there in silence, not understanding what happened. After some time, I get really angry. They said finally he's dead. Who could wish death for such a kind person. I will burn down their entire house. With my magic.
