Chapter 100 - When Cless got a mysterious patron

Chapter 100 - When Cless got a mysterious patron

Ten delvers, two parties used to farm the metal bulls and hold the boss room for an entire day, defeated. Easily defeated. She could sense that they were out of danger. Cless took her time to check Shad. He was tired and beaten but at the same satisfied he could corner the last one. Cless had a hunch and searched the mage's clothes, finding his Deeppockets.

"Flush your materials," She ordered the mage. She could get the materials herself but she'd have to wait for the spell to wear off. The guy complied, clearly afraid of the monsters of Cless' guild.

Several thin metal plates harvested from the bulls. Copper, Tin, Brass, Bronze, Iron and some Zinc. The haul of a whole day monopolizing the boss room and herding bulls to grow their plates in the miasma vent. With the scarcity of metals in the City, these plates would sell for double the usual price. It was more than enough for what Cless needed. If it doesn't get confiscated.

Now it came to the issue of what she should do with them. They probably warned someone they were coming after her guild. If they showed up wounded like that, they could spin any sort of lies as to how their guild was ambushed by them instead. She had an idea. Cless took the leader guy and removed his gag.

"Are you the guild master for Steelhammer?"

"Yes, bitch. Your days are numbered. You don't know who you are messing with!"

That was interesting. Were these guys working for someone? She stared at him. "Tell me then. Who am I messing with?"

"I'll die if I tell." He answered avoiding her eyes.

"Will this third party kill you faster than me if you do tell? Because The undead beyond those blackened tunnels will love to feast on you." She put pressure on the man. "You are lucky I don't let my monsters feast on human flesh, but maybe... just a little... what do you think?"

She could put a lot of pressure on him. And she could modulate her voice to sound exactly like she wanted. With her charisma and the ambiance, she wouldn't even need [Intimidating Authority]. She saw no reason not to, however. She was going to get this guy's charter and merge with hers. This would put her guild on the ninth spot of the ranking. No more wait times for delving. Time to bend him to her will.

He was intimidated but still found the focus to snarl at her. "You are not even human, hellspawn! I weep for your mother to be assaulted by some monster to breed a thing as ugly as you."

Cless drove her sword through the knee of the men's good leg. She roared at him. "You speak of my mother again and I'll devour your soul. Only that will be a fair price for the insult." Without even thinking she knew her Skill made her threat real. Cless twisted the sword just a bit, scraping the tip against the Dungeon floor. "Who do you work for! Tell me!"

Clegane and Dagon were murdered to shut their mouths. It meant someone above them. Cless had a hunch these guys also worked for whoever that was. No way two big bosses would share the town. Whoever pulled Clegane's and the Delvers' strings was too strong to allow that.

"I can't! He'll murder my family! it is all your fault. You let that assassin without a guild and he grabbed him."

The pieces fell in place. "Xander? Is he an assassin? Was he the one that slaughtered everyone at the guard station?" He didn't deny. His silence told her everything. "Who is the boss? Who is pulling all the strings?"

He kept his mouth shut. Cless pondered her choices. She could undermine him using [Seductress' Charm] but she really didn't want to go down that path again.

"Do you want to live? I'll offer you a deal to let you go. The same one for every single one of you. You will give each member of my guild two of each Stat point, including Magic, Wisdom, and Charisma.and fifteen thousand Experience points each. I'll also take your guild charter and your Skills. I'll let you go if you promise to forget what happened in this Dungeon floor today even under magical interrogation or memory-restoring effects. You'll tell everyone you were attacked by a draining undead... A greater vampire! Yes. A greater vampire did that to you. After that, you are free to go. The last one to agree and whoever openly disagrees will have a close encounter with Kate's claws over there."

The slemuroth scrapped her claws over the Dungeon wall bricks for dramatic effect. Cless' threats were enforced by [Intimidating Authority]. She was Royalty so they didn't outrank her and even if one of them had Wisdom unlocked, which she doubted, none of them would be able to beat her Charisma. The leader and the mage were the first to agree. The others, fearing being the last one, quickly agreed. Cless used her Skill and let them interact with the prompts. They were going to either die or forget anyway. She picked up the guild charter.

One of the archers, the last one to accept, shouted, "Please don't kill me! I accept, I accept!"

"I lied about killing the last one."

>     Your contracts earned you +14 to all Stats points and 150,000 Experience Points. You reached level 101. +1 Stat point. +2 to all Stats. You are now the guild master of Steelhammer.

>

>     You gained Skills. Check the text notification for more details.

Somehow it went through. These guys shouldn't have enough Stat point in Wisdom or Charisma to give enough to everyone but it seems they converted other stats to make up for the ones missing, that's why the math didn't add up. Or probably some of them just didn't have that many Stats to give up. She didn't wait this time. Cless checked the Skills right away.

She gave [Great Agility] to Kurt. Cless gathered her guild and walked deeper into the tunnels that were still blackened from the mold.

"Wait! What about us here! None of us can walk!" The former guild master shouted.

She turned around and waved, "Good luck climbing back to the surface. I bet the delvers on the eight floor will help you. Great sense of community you have here in this City."

"They will kill us and rob our items!"

Cless frowned and stomped back to where he was. "You came here to murder me out of spite. You insult me, you insult the memory of my dear mother, I spare your life for what it was worth and now you want what? That I carry you back to the surface? Really?"

She tapped her feet. These delvers were done for. As good as dead. If the other delvers didn't murder them for their stuff, some monster would as they crawled back to the surface. If they got their limbs back, they would be killed by Xander or whoever pulls their strings.

"You are a priestess. You reattached Xander's limbs. Please help us. We'll give you more Experience if that's what you want. We need to get out of this town if we are to survive."

"I'll get you out of town and mend your limbs. Not in this order. Actually, we'll do that after we clear the floor boss. You'll go away, across the ocean to the next land, never to come back. You'll forget everything about Glauchester, about us. I don't care if you scatter or eat each other. In exchange, I want the name of the mastermind and enough Experience pooled from all of you guys to bring my guild members to level one hundred and one. If any of you try to betray me or run away you'll die on the spot and I'll get half of your Stats."

She got the deal. Cless picked up the severed limbs and reattached them. Some of the limbs were savagely destroyed and lost some length. These would never be the same exactly but with practice, they would compensate for the slight imbalance.

She took them along. After finding a good spot for the next Hallow trap, she repeated the same old routine. The undead horde came and the fireball traps burst in sequence. With ten experienced, even though weakened, delvers to help, they did quick work of the last group of undead before the boss.

>     For killing 82 undead, you gained 18,313 kill and 18,450 proficiency Experience.

The Kill Experience plummeted. Cless would've gained over a hundred thousand from this group if it weren't for these leeches. She shrugged and moved on. They did map the whole floor, killing two or three groups that were at the edge of the Hallow area. Cless wanted the biggest clear bonus possible for this floor.

The boss room was as usual. A huge dome with a lower floor and a ramp. Cless could see in the middle a big fat giant, made of stitched flesh, misshapen. He looked like a fat man, clothed in poorly wrapped chains, some pieces dangling. A huge meat cleaver in one hand, He was standing next to the miasma vent.

Cless gagged. "What is that thing?"

"That, guild master, is called 'The Butcher'," The former Steelhammer guild master explained. "He is an undead that grows stronger with his kills as he absorbs the flesh of whoever he kills to himself. He is there as the floor boss for the last decade. His level should be above one hundred and fifty."

That would put his defensive ability sky high. Not to mention the size and the fact it was already a boss ten years ago. It should've acquired many traits.

"Is the boss fast?"

"Yes, but not as fast as an average monster below one hundred. His Stats are mostly in Strength and Health. It is almost impossible to damage him."

Cless pondered about some strategies. "Does he have any healing or regeneration abilities?"

"Whenever he kills someone, he grows and heals as he adds that flesh to himself. After a while, the flesh decays and he returns to his old size. Look, several teams tried to kill him. Some never returned."

"He dies today. I can understand if you don't want to fight here. If you do fight, I'm keeping all the rewards."

"We will sit out of this one. If we stay outside this room, we won't count for the fight."

"That's fine. Stay there, we'll be back soon. What is the proof for this boss? The cleaver?"

"I'd take the cleaver and the head. The chains too should be good iron. Bathing in miasma for that long should've made the metal quite valuable."

"Then we're off. Stay in the dead-end corridor to the left. We will come back to get you out."

The former Steelhammer members retreated back and Cless told her guild the strategy.

"I'm loaning Kate one hundred Health points. If each of you can also loan her twenty, she might be able to tank the boss. I'll set up a Judgement bomb while she holds him back. After the judgment bomb goes off we'll burst everything on him. This will take a while, please wait.

Stolen story; please report.

"Kurt, you'll keep your song on us. Venaris, you'll see if the boss can be pushed around by your sneak attacks. If it can, hold it in reserve to interrupt his blows if things get too ugly. Vic... I don't think your poison will work on the undead."

"It won't," the snake-man answered. "I'm quite limited in my choices. I think I'll use magic missile since it has no miss chance."

"Silverfang, you'll join in the second wave with me. Once Kate has a solid grasp on the boss' attention. He seems intelligent though. We need as many melee combatants there to lower his reactions by keeping him harried."

"Cless," Vic spoke again. "If you are going into melee, how are you going to defend yourself?"

"I just got a Skill for shield and sword combat. It will work with my [Sanctuary] enhanced Shield of Faith. I intend to block the attacks with the shield."

"If that is so, take my [Shield Mastery] Skill. It is wasted on me."

"Right. Stay safe you three. We are going in!"

The boss wouldn't leave the vent unless he was really threatened. Since the ramp was on the opposite side from the vent, he was out of range for most spells. Cless only needed to reach the center of the room though. She spent almost her entire Power setting up Light spells as far as she could put them. Soon the whole room was as bright as day.

"That's one hundred and fifty-one lights. I'll burn almost all my Magic Power in this judgment bomb. I'll have only eighty-four left for the rest of the fight."

Vic threw his hands up. "Only eighty-four, she says."

"Kate, wait until I finish the Judgement bomb to grab the boss. Everyone else, wait for my signal. When I finish moving, cover your eyes. I mean, really cover your eyes."

They went down the ramp and reached the middle of the room. Butcher rattled his chains, weaved his massive cleaver in defiance. Now that they could see him up close, the monstrosity had over five meters in height.

Cless placed Protection on Kate, adjusted her shared skill to [Dragon Skin], her Knight one to [Stage Magician], and started to do her Sacred Dance: Judgement. Since nobody did anything aggressive, all Butcher did was to shift a step toward the tunnel to block their way. She dropped six hundred Power to bring down all but one of the Lights on him. Ten minutes later, she did the last step, shaking sweat drops as the choreographed spellcasting finished.

"Sacred Dance: Judgement!"

One hundred and fifty beams of Holy Light descended on Butcher. If anyone could look at them, it seemed like a solid triangle of light floated in the air. Sensing the attack, Butcher shouted his taunt.

"Ahhh, Fresh me— Arrrrhghhh!"

It was cut short by his own wailing because his flesh was seared by the beams hitting his entire body. The light ended and Cless could feel the ground shake and the pungent smell of seared not-fresh meat. Underdog triggered and raised her defensive level by forty-six. Cless hesitated as she gawked at the absurdly high value. There was a random element but even so, the Butcher was way stronger. Cless had confidence that was a challenge they could best.

"Kate, Go!"

The slemuroth removed its paws covering her eyes and dashed to meet the boss. Protection wore off on the first blow as [Dragon Skin] would only work if the blow actually touched her. It only scraped fur. Kate threw herself over the butcher, latching to the chains with all four long sloth claws and savagely biting the butcher's face, trying to gouge his eyes. She was smaller than the undead abomination, for once.

Kurt flew up near the roof where he'd be out of range unless the Butcher could fly too. He sung a bolstering song meant for bridging the level gap between strong monster.

"[Dragonslayer's DIrge]!"

Cless looked around. A multitude of seared chunks of undead flesh and even some half-molten chains that broke off were scattered near the vent. Butcher shook and grabbed Kate, trying to pry the furred monster free as he had little leverage to cleave her while she was latched to his form. Distracted, he took a blow from Venaris' sling on the side and bounded four meters away, falling on his side. The two monsters rolled on the ground, the cleaver scraping Kate. Cless threw some Mending spells to keep Kate from being too wounded.

Butcher kept clawing, biting and cleaving as he finally yanked Kate away. Cless used Mending one more time.

"Kate, try to block his cleaver."

Kate snarled and taunted the Butcher, showing her teeth with bits of zombie flesh hanging stuck between them.

"Zombie flesh, good! Monster flesh, good! Human flesh, better!" Butcher taunted and charged Kate.

She raised a forearm as Butcher came to cleave her. In a testament to his massive Strenght, Butcher leaped up in the air, his fat rotten flesh and chains bouncing up and down. He brought the cleaver down. Cless noticed his thrust leg was the right one.

"[Heavy Smash]!"

Kate didn't take it straight on. She moved sideways, throwing her forearm to parry and deflect the cleaver. It still furrowed a strip of her fur. Kate roared and climbed Butcher, settling on his back and grabbing with both legs and her wounded arm. With the free arm, she hacked at the huge zombie's neck. Butcher came fully into sight, his front entirely burnt, some ribs and entrails showing, held only by the chains wrapped around him. He tried to shake Kate away but couldn't.

"Run, cowards!"

Butcher decided to ignore the slemuroth and go for a quick kill to replenish his Health. He ran toward the smaller guild members.

"Scatter!" Cless ordered. She adjusted her sword stance as her guild members moved away and out of the boss' charge range.

"Shield of Faith. Hallow."

Butcher burst into flames as the Hallowed ground weakened and damaged him, but it would take hours to kill him with that damage alone. Cless' intention was just to draw the attention from the Butcher to her. She canceled the Health loaned to Kate and it returned to them. He charged at the priestess and Cless decided to make use of her newly-acquired Skill. She had a shield and a sword, after all.

Vic threw Magic Missiles to distract the boss. With the guild engaged in melee, that was the only spell he had with no risk of friendly fire. Venaris kept shooting it when she got a clear opening. Butcher skidded to a side almost falling down, breaking his charge

Butcher brought down the cleaver and Cless moved as one with the Shield, dropping the Hallow effect. It slid on the golden light construct instead of hitting straight on like the Knight's attack and causing a spiderweb weave to show on the smooth magical construct. At the same time, she slashed at his right knee. The black metal broadsword released sparks as it scraped on the base of his knee-cap. She kept moving, pulling her sword and circling around the boss that overextended his attack. She got around the thick leg and attacked again, this time aiming at the tendons on the back of his knee. Without the boost from Hallow, she couldn't do much damage as the boss was still over fifty levels above her. She only nicked the tendon. Cless knew she had to shorten the gap.

"Turn Undead!"

Her spell washed over the Butcher and the effect was diminished. A trait to resist Holy magic? Or something else? She used the targeted version instead of the area spell but the effect was more like the latter. What matters right now was that he was slightly weakened.

The butcher was slower than Cless by an order of magnitude. Pelted by Venaris' sling bullets and with Kate still hacking its tough nape, Butcher failed to properly connect the next series of attacks. His big size meant Cless could predict where he was going to hit. The Shield of Faith, bolstered by the [Sword and Board]'s durability boost and [Shield Mastery] damage reduction was almost cracking instead of being pulverized on the first two hits.

"Silverfang, climb on his back and help Kate."

Cless danced around the towering mass of rotten flesh as the Lycan appeared from the shadow of the colossal undead and climbed it, ravaging the monster as the werewolf went up. The Butcher broke her Shield of Faith and opened a gash on Cless side. It was only her [Dragon Skin] that stopped her from being cleaved in two.

She stopped her graceful weave of dodges and slashes to drink a Healing Potion and catch her breath. Checking her magic reserves, she never felt so empty. Drawing out the fight would be good for her as Butcher didn't seem to be healing from his small wounds. He also stopped with his verbal taunts. That alone was a sign they were getting him to play serious. She had to restore her shield even though she wanted to keep some magic for an emergency.

"Shield of Faith!"

If she could get another boost... Cless thought of some possibilities and felt Kate's blood drip on her face from the wounded arm. She remembered one of the cringeworthy Skills she gave Kurt. [White Knight]. Kate was female and she was wounded. She skipped an attack opportunity to shift her [Knight] shared Skill to that one. All her Stats grew by fifty percent of their base value.

"Turn Undead!"

She used another opportunity to cast again because the boss was distracted as another set of magic missiles tore part of the Butcher's flesh open. Due to his massive level difference, most of the damage was ignored. She dodged another blow and went for the knee tendons one more time, adding another spell to increase her damage.

"Flametongue!"

Her sword flared with golden flames. She went for the same tendon as before, and this time severed it clean. The Butcher tried to pivot on his leg to get her with his cleaver and the leg failed to support his weight. She was able to hit this deep only because the boss was harried by that many attackers and Kurt's bolstering song. He fell on his belly. Kate and Silverfang ravaged his neck instead of jumping off. With a mighty crash and the sound of hundreds of chain links rattling followed by the splatter of meat, butcher fell down and squirmed to get up.

Cless touched his left foot and used the extra time to cast a long spell she didn't have much chance of using so far. She had to make every single Magic Power point she had left count.

"Return to whence you came! — Banish!"

Holy power spread from his leg, thicker than a tree trunk and disintegrated the limb before the undead's own resistances dissipated the spell's power. She checked her reserves, there was only enough for three more Banish. She would be entirely drained long ago if her Magic Power wasn't regenerating like crazy during the fight.

Butcher trashed around and Cless knew it was time to finish it. She swapped Kate's shared Skill to [Perfect Might] as the danger of a one-hit kill now was minimal. Cless figured out that this butcher was not a single undead - it was a gestalt of undead monsters, each one adapted to function as one body part. She killed the leg ones only. If that was the truth, then maybe the one working as the head was the controller. No wonder it could speak.

"Kate, berserk mode! Go for his spine!"

The slemuroth bellowed and its muscles bulged. Kate yanked the chains away from his neck and savagely clawed several times while SIlverfang kept hacking at the boss' arms.

"Silverfang, pin down his right arm!"

Cless moved around and used Banish again. The right arm dissolved, leaving the cleaver on the ground. A loud snap signaled when Kate finally severed the tough boss' spine. Butcher kept thrashing although his head now shook back and forth, attached to the body only by the thick neck tendons and flesh. It lost control of its body. The teeth of the huge head still snapped around. They avoided it, fearing that a single bite would grant him regeneration.

Silverfang and Cless moved to the left arm, holding it in place so she could Banish that limb too. After she used it a fourth time for the right leg, the boss could only worm around. Cless didn't have enough Magic Power to use Banish a fifth time. But now, limbless and immobile, it was a matter of hacking the rest of the head off.

>     For defeating level 163 Octo-Gestalt Abomination, you gained 58,099 kill and 37,500 proficiency Experience points. You reached level 102. +1 Stat Point.

"Woohoo!" She cheered.

Cless rushed to heal Kate. She could see the miasma vent shutting down. It could mean only one thing...

*Rumble*

The floor at the middle of the room broke apart and a gilded chest appeared. Besides the coins and potions, inside there was only a piece of paper over two heavy, big, and old-looking books. It was odd. The other Dungeon gave one item per person. Was it some kind of personal trait for Dungeons?

>     For clearing over 95% of a mid-level floor for the first time in a decade, you gained 3 levels. You reached level 104. +3 Stat Points. You reached Master Instructor level 25.

Somewhere they missed twenty-five undead, by Cless calculations. Maybe in the spawn zone. Kate yawned. She would have to hibernate soon.

"Kate, Shrink to the smallest size."

The huge slemuroth became a forty-centimeter-tall furry monkey-sloth hybrid. It now weighed only four kilograms and was only as strong as a strong man.

She picked up the two books and went wide-eyed at the titles.

>     "Racial Classes Compendium."

>

>     "History of Ragnarök."

The piece of paper fluttered out and Shad picked it up. Cless stored the books in a Deeppocket and checked the paper.

>     "My dearest Queen of Myrkheim,

>

>

> Hide these books carefully. They are not welcome on the surface.

>

> Delve to the deepest floor. I am waiting for Your Majesty's visit, you who bear the Lord's true Valknut Symbol. Take this shard and fit it in the middle of the amulet."

>

>     — Angus

She noticed a pointed crystal shard. It was triangular in all sides but the base seemed broken. She took her Midgard amulet and touched the piece to the center. The metal gave in and the crystal embedded itself, leaving only the tip outside.

The chest was already dissolving. Too bad they couldn't take it. It was a pretty chest. Cless gathered her guild and went back to the surface. Too many things to do.
