Rejection and Denial
"It could have been soo easy! Yet, all you did was mope around and act all narcissistic as if all that mattered in this world were your problems. Don't you think we ever had our own problems to deal with too, Liam?"
The young lady, who appears to be of American descent with slight brunette hair, made an aesthetic choice of dress that screamed fashion, reminiscent of the 1800s with its tight bodice, full skirt of intricate lace patterns, high neckline, and long sleeves.
"Tch, so what? At least I talked it out, but what did you guys do? You kept it to yourself, damn it. How the hell would I know then?"
The man who replied also seems to be in his 20s, although he doesn't appear American enough. With all the people surrounding him looking at their lover's quarrel as if it's their evening drama show. However, in the sense of fashion though, his taste is impeccable; he wore a sleek, tailored suit in charcoal gray with a facial mask, although the last part does seem unnecessary when asked by others.
"Hey, you guys...."
An NPC comment from our boy, da James. He is your typical normal guy who wears casual wear most of the time but knows when to wear dresses that could even melt a maiden's heart. Overall, he is a good fella overall.
"Don't butt in here, Eric, this is between us."
"Not when you guys start involving us too... Olivia."
Feeling like this is never going anywhere, Liam starts to distance himself to deliver a final blow and head to God knows where.
"Hahaa yeah Eric, even though she totally got you involved, it's not your problem at all! How laughable that I dated her and even loved her enough to go beyond all this. But no, I can see that all we did was nothing more than pretend love. All I saw was an illusion, and all YOU saw me in were expectations. Olivia. I know that you are a good person, but I sincerely hope this will be our last contact."
"Yeah, be all sentimental until the end, I'm sure it makes you feel better, you bastard."
And so, having said what he wanted to, although he still felt regret for what he said last to her, maybe due to his memories uncontrollably flooding in, he left the scene of the drama and returned to his normal clerk job at the not-so-famous midnight bar.
-----Prologue finishes-----
Do you ever wonder about the Abyss?
(Switching POV to Liam from our good ol' narrator)
Scene: After the previous drama that happened for God knows why, now at midnight working at a club.
The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
"Mm, seems like a lot of guys come here than usual. I was wondering maybe I could better myself by seeing myself out with a chick, but I guess not."
"Mm, I can see what you are thinking boy but if you ever try to score up our customers at my club, I will pry open your intestines boy, remember it."
"Ha Ha... Yeah, I totally wasn't thinking that. C'mon, show some concern to a heart-breaking man here, chief."
"Funny you say that with a straight face with no emotions of guilt or sadness."
"Am I not good at hiding emotions? Well, jokes aside, it seems like we are getting a lot of male customers these days. Know why?"
"It's kind of insider information but I will let you know since you will probably be here for eternity."
"To my knowledge, I don't owe any debt or eternal servitude to you, just so you know."
"The word is that a new gate entirely of new origins and mysteries will appear soon near our town."
"...! This town?! I daydreamed this a lot but damn, to think such a day will finally come."
"Haha, you're thinking of being a hero, boy?"
"Hmph, not a chance in this life. I'm glad I can use some martial arts at least if anything at all. I think a tragic yet hopeful side character will fit me, you know?"
"Haa I guess overestimating our potential is common these days huh? The threat and fear of Armageddon really do falter as time goes on, as King Arthur Night said."
"....."
"Was that too much of a dark topic for a kid like you?"
"Nothing, we have been talking for too long, let's go start the real night."
'After that, I have been doing what I have always been doing: clean the utensils, kick out annoying customers, help money launder client's money, and mainly, drug trades in the alleyway.'
'I wonder if this is the happiest thing to do for me?'
"Hey, kid!"
A loud feminine voice alerted Liam as he was on night duty to patrol the neighborhood area near the club.
"Mm, A lady who wears an alpha mask, what could possibly go wrong today? Just so you know, I will tell you everything I know, you don't have to torture me."
"Hahahhaha, that's clever kid, I like it but don't worry the Alpha Legion won't be here today."
"Meaning?"
"I alone am enough."
Although he can't see her facial expressions, Liam knows one thing: if you see any legion members, run or face your death bravely. That's the only option for witnessing even just a member of the Alpha.
"So? Where are the drugs?"
Liam obediently handed the drugs. He knows for a fact he will be killed even if he speaks or hesitates a little; he isn't some main character after all.
"Good, good..."
She continued to search for the drugs while saying "good" among other nice words as if she must say those words. Is it the craziness of the Alphas? One can wonder.
"...kid, do you ever wonder about the Abyss?"
"Sometimes, although I doubt I will ever come into a situation where I need to think too much about it."
"Such boring answers, are you seeking death?"
Her aura surged so high that he even wondered how lucky he was that he is able to breathe even after witnessing such an eye-shattering event.
"No, I'm sorry, I was thoughtless when answering it. If I may ask, can you enlighten me on what you think of it?"
"Yeah, that's not a bad response but too bad though, that's not nearly enough."
After saying that, the only thing Liam remembered was the words " The Godkiller stone was finally found and how she was happy with the cooperation."
He finally realized now why the tight-lipped chief told him such important information and why he was on patrol duty and drug trading when the other guys usually took these over while all he would do was typical clerk duties.
Does he regret it? Perhaps not. Dying by a legion member could be considered a good death as compared to dying by the time being. At least you die quickly and painlessly here.
If anything, he thought he would at least be a side character, not an NPC character dying for such a stupid reason.
Still, he is content with what he is and what he has done so far, and that's what matters to him the most.
