Ch 5 Standing Tall

"The last fight with the goblins, I managed to win due to quick wits, but life is not always a bed of roses. I knew that facing them head-on would be suicide, considering my lack of skill with the sword and no combat training."

"So, I decided to use unconventional methods to gain an extra edge. I carved sturdy branches into wooden spears, giving myself more room to breathe and weakening them before engaging in close combat with my sword. These throwing weapons could prove crucial."

"With ample preparations made, I ventured deeper into goblin territory, this was evidently marked by their boasting totems. Not far from one of the totems, I spotted a cave, which was undoubtedly the goblin's stronghold. The number of enemies inside was uncertain, and the danger was undeniable. But survival and escaping this place alive were the only options."

"I had to observe their patterns carefully - when they stepped out, when their security would be lax. I knew I'd be at a disadvantage if I took the fight directly into their home turf. So, I came up with a plan to lure them out of the cave. Gathering a large amount of wood, twigs, and branches, I placed them near the cave entrance. I was fortunate that there were no goblins nearby, as they were most active at night."

"The purpose of gathering wood was to create a large fire that would suffocate them once they ran out of the cave, wheezing and gasping for air. While they were disoriented, I placed short, sharpened sticks near the entrance to mess up their footing. With the fire started, I lay in ambush, waiting for the right moment to strike."

"As they eventually came out of the cave, gasping for air they collided and got injured by the stakes, I didn't waste any time. I threw wooden spears at them, catching them off guard. My plan was working. But I knew I had to face them directly to finish them off. Stepping out and taunting them, I drew them towards me. I continued throwing spears, causing further chaos and damage before engaging in close combat with my sword."

"Suddenly, from the corner of my eye, I spotted a goblin attempting to stab me in the back with a crude spear. Instinctively, I activated the Shield of Perseverance, successfully warding off the attack. With a swift horizontal motion, I moved my claymore, slicing the goblin in half."

"Some goblins tried to flee, but I quickly threw more spears, further disrupting their retreat. Closing in, I attacked with my sword, taking care of the stragglers one by one. But then, the boss monster appeared. A giant, grayish hobgoblin, twice the size of the others, was ready to face me."

"I tightened my grip on the claymore, steeling myself for what would undoubtedly be the most challenging battle yet. My heart pounded, and a mix of fear and determination filled me. There was no turning back now; I had to give it my all."

"As I stood before the menacing hobgoblin, its imposing figure casting an eerie shadow over me, I could feel the intensity building inside me. The Shield of Perseverance glowed with a brilliant golden light, empowering me with a surge of confidence. I locked eyes with the creature, an intense stare that conveyed my determination to face this formidable opponent head-on."

"With a deep breath, I activated the shield, and the translucent golden barrier materialized before me. It floated mid-air, following my every move as I brandished my claymore with a firm grip. The weight of the sword was both comforting in my hands, and I reminded myself that it was not just my weapon but an extension of my will."

"I assessed the hobgoblin's movements. I knew that brute force alone wouldn't be enough to defeat it, so I had to rely on my quick wits and the advantage provided by the Shield of Perseverance. I had to use everything at my disposal to even have a chance at victory, in order to escape unscathed."

"As the creature lunged at me, its massive claws slashing through the air, I deftly sidestepped the attack. The shield deflected the sharp claws, and I saw an opportunity. With a burst of speed, I closed in on the hobgoblin, thrusting my claymore forward. The blade found purchase, sinking into the tough hide of the creature's arm. It roared in pain, but it was just the beginning."

"Keeping a safe distance, I threw one of the wooden spears I had crafted earlier. The spear whizzed through the air, and I watched with satisfaction as it struck the hobgoblin's side. The creature staggered, its focus momentarily diverted. Seizing the advantage, I launched another spear, this time targeting its leg. The hobgoblin stumbled, its movements slowing."

"But the creature was far from defeated. With renewed fury, it swung its massive club towards me. I raised the Shield of Perseverance just in time, and the golden barrier absorbed the impact, protecting me from the powerful blow. My arm trembled under the force, but the shield held strong."

"I knew this would not end anytime soon, it had come down to a battle of endurance, which I would be eventually losing in. I had an idea, inorder to even have a chance at victory. Thinking about it I smiled brightly."

"As the giant hobgoblin closed in with a blood-curdling screech, I intentionally let my guard down, giving it a false sense of triumph. Little did it know that I had a trick up my sleeve. My pockets were full of mud, and without hesitation, I hurled it into the creature's eyes. The hobgoblin let out a loud cry, clutching its face in agony, momentarily blinded by the unexpected attack."

"Seizing the opportunity, I channeled all my strength and performed a Sparta kick, putting my entire weight behind the blow. The impact sent the hobgoblin sprawling backward, and it fell to the ground with a thud, stunned and disoriented. I didn't waste a second, knowing that I had to end this quickly."

"With my heart pounding in my chest, I closed the distance between us swiftly. The hobgoblin's roars of pain and anger echoed through the air as it struggled to regain its footing. But I didn't give it a chance to recover. In one swift motion, I raised my claymore high above my head and brought it down with all my might, aiming for the creature's head."

"The blade of my sword pierced through the hobgoblin's skull with a sickening thud. Its cries abruptly silenced as life left its massive body. The battle was over. I stood there, breathing heavily, covered in mud, and with a mix of relief and disbelief that I had defeated such a formidable foe."

"The forest fell into an eerie silence as the remaining goblins, sensing the loss of their leader, retreated into the shadows. I knew that my victory was not without cost, and I couldn't afford to be complacent. The goblins would regroup, and more dangers awaited me in this mysterious forest."

"But for now, I allowed myself a moment of respite. I had proven to myself that I was more capable than I had believed. The Shield of Perseverance had been a powerful ally, but it was my quick thinking and resourcefulness that had turned the tide in my favor."

"As I wiped the sweat and mud from my brow, I reflected on the journey that had brought me to this point. I had faced many challenges, and there were still many ahead, but I was determined to find my way out of this enigmatic forest and return to the world beyond."

"With the hobgoblin defeated and the goblins momentarily retreating, I knew I had to keep moving forward. The forest held more secrets, more dangers, and perhaps even the answers I sought about how I had ended up here in the first place."
