First task!

First task!

As the first light of dawn painted the sky in hues of pink and gold, Jamie found himself walking towards the infirmary where Sader was recuperating. The events of the past few days weighed heavily on his mind, but he pushed those thoughts aside as he entered the room.

Sader lay on the bed, his white fur a stark contrast against the dark sheets. Jamie's eyes were drawn to the bandages wrapped around Sader's torso, a reminder of the recent conflict.

"How are you feeling?" Jamie asked, his voice softer than usual.

Sader's eyes flickered open, a weak smile playing on his lips. "Been better, but I'll live."

Jamie moved closer, examining the wound with a critical eye. "I'm sorry," he said, the words tumbling out before he could stop them.

Sader chuckled, wincing slightly at the movement. "It's nothing. I've felt much more grievous blows than this."

"Yeah, right!" Jamie scoffed, his concern morphing into exasperation. "Stop acting tough, you white bastard!"

"Right back at ya," Sader retorted, his eyes twinkling with amusement, "except for the color of your fur."

Jamie shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at his lips. "Alright then, take rest," he said, turning to leave.

But as he reached the door, Sader's voice stopped him. "Jamie, wait."

Jamie turned back, surprised to see Sader's paw outstretched, a guilty expression on his face.

"You may not ask what happened," Sader began, his voice low and urgent, "but I want you to know that I figured out I was actually hired by the lizardman tribe's chief. It was all a smooth cover-up, with a few upper-rank cockroach man tribe generals involved."

Jamie's eyebrows shot up, but he quickly schooled his features into a neutral expression. He nodded, thanking Sader for the information before stepping out of the room.

Outside, Shadow and Fear materialized by his side, their ethereal forms shimmering in the early morning light.

"See, master!" they exclaimed in unison, their voices a mixture of vindication and concern.

Jamie's lips curled into a wry smile. "Yeah, that lizard bastard has bad taste."

Fear's form flickered, a sign of his agitation. "Are we going to counterattack?"

Jamie considered the question for a moment before shaking his head. "No, let's observe for now. I'd rather strike at a moment where I have a reason for killing all of them to extinction."

Shadow nodded, his form solidifying slightly. "I agree, master."

"I know," Jamie replied, his voice tinged with fondness.

As they walked away from the infirmary, a familiar figure approached. Morona, her scales gleaming in the sunlight, looked at Jamie with a mixture of guilt and apprehension.

"Can we talk?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jamie met her gaze, his expression softening. "I already know, and it's not your fault."

"But-" Morona started to protest, but Jamie cut her off with a gentle shake of his head.

"No buts," he said firmly. "You're my family member now, and I won't let anybody destroy that."

Morona's eyes widened, a look of gratitude and fierce loyalty settling on her features. Jamie could see the longing in her eyes, the desire to be useful to him in any way possible.

As they continued walking, a memory suddenly washed over Jamie—Srides's face, clear as day. Without a word, he took off, racing towards the mansion gates as fast as his legs could carry him.

Upon reaching the ornate entrance, Jamie shifted into his human form. With practiced ease, he approached the guards, his demeanor calm and composed.

"Open the door, please," he requested politely.

One of the guards sneered, looking him up and down. "No beggars allowed."

His companion nodded in agreement, but before Jamie could respond, a familiar voice rang out from within the mansion grounds.

"Let him in at once!"

The gates swung open, revealing Srides standing just beyond. Jamie felt a pang of guilt as he took in her appearance—she was stunning, her beauty enough to make anyone's heart race.

There was a moment of tense silence before Srides spoke, her voice laced with amusement. "As soon as possible, huh?"

Jamie braced himself for a lecture, but to his surprise, Srides pulled him into a tight embrace.

"Don't make me wait so long," she murmured. "You're my only family now."

Jamie returned the hug, his voice thick with emotion. "My bad."

As they pulled apart, Srides's expression turned serious. "How's your tribe?"

Jamie explained the situation, watching as shock and concern flitted across Srides's face.

"What should I do now?" he asked, feeling suddenly uncertain.

Srides considered for a moment before answering. "They'll make a move, but considering your situation, it's best if you don't let them make the first move. Act quickly."

Jamie nodded, a determined glint in his eye. "You're so damn right."

A smile played on Srides's lips. "Let them know power, then. The way you fought in the stadium was utterly mesmerizing."

Jamie felt heat rise to his cheeks. "Oh!"

Sensing his embarrassment, Srides changed the subject. "Are you hungry? I have some human food you might like to try."

Before Jamie could respond, she was already leading him towards the dining area. The aroma of freshly cooked porridge filled the air, making Jamie's mouth water.

As he took his first bite, Jamie's eyes widened in surprise. The taste was unlike anything he had experienced before—salty, comforting, and utterly delicious. For the first time in his life, he found himself at a loss for words.

Srides watched with amusement as Jamie devoured plate after plate, his enthusiasm never waning. "There's more, so don't worry!" she assured him.

Jamie could only nod, too focused on savoring every morsel to form a coherent response.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Jamie leaned back, patting his now-full stomach. "I'm done," he announced contentedly.

Srides raised an eyebrow. "Finally, after twenty plates!"

Jamie felt a twinge of embarrassment, but the lingering taste of the porridge was worth any amount of teasing.

As they made their way back to the entrance, Srides's expression turned serious once more. "Now do what you gotta do," she said, her voice filled with a mixture of concern and pride. "And don't come back being defeated."

Jamie straightened, his resolve strengthened by her words and the nourishing meal. "Sure thing! On it!"

As he stepped out of the mansion grounds, Jamie felt a renewed sense of purpose. The challenges ahead were daunting, but with his family—both old and new—supporting him, he knew he could face whatever came his way.

The sun had fully risen now, bathing the world in warm, golden light. Jamie took a deep breath, savoring the crisp morning air. He had a tribe to protect, enemies to outwit, and a future to secure. And he was ready for it all.

With Shadow and Fear flanking him, Jamie set off towards his tribe's territory. His mind raced with plans and strategies, each step bringing him closer to the inevitable confrontation.

As he walked, Jamie reflected on the complex web of alliances and betrayals that had brought him to this point. The lizardman tribe, the cockroach man generals, Sader's revelation—all pieces of a puzzle he was determined to solve.

But more than that, he thought about the bonds he had formed. Morona, seeking redemption and acceptance. Srides, offering support and wisdom. His tribe, looking to him for leadership and protection.

Jamie's paws clenched into fists, his resolve hardening. He would not let them down. Whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice, he would ensure the safety and prosperity of those he called family.

The road ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger and difficult choices. But as Jamie pressed on, he felt a familiar sense of calm settle over him. The future, with all its mysteries and marvels, awaited. And he would meet it head-on, united with his allies and unafraid of any challenge that dared to stand in his way.
