Intermission. Creating Monsters

Intermission. Creating Monsters

"Sir, we're running out of leeches! That other party already decimated our previous stock, so we need more soon!"

"Make some more, then! What are the mages doing?! In the meantime, throw those grasshoppers at them."

"But they didn't take the grasshopper quest! We still have plenty of caterpillars, but those will take some time to travel there."

"You're kidding, right? They'll make short work of the caterpillars. We need monsters that take more effort to defeat!"

"How about the mantises?"

"Those are too high-levelled right now. They're like wandering field bosses."

"Whatever that means..."

"Anyway, just toss over anything easier than a mantis and harder than a caterpillar. Even hobgoblins will do."

"The design team says they haven't finished the regional variants. Those are slated to be completed next week."

"Whatever, we can have some strays wandering in from elsewhere. The variants are just to spice things up anyway."

"That's not what you said yesterday..."

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

"This is an emergency situation! No one expected them to jump in through that temporary portal. Now the portal team is rushing to make it permanent, and we probably have to brace ourselves for an influx of more players too."

"Any plans to let the second pair back to Earth? They seemed pretty desperate the last time I saw them."

"They're settling in fine now. Apparently their original portal location was unstable. I'll have the team look into setting up another permanent one there after their current job."

"I hope so. Feyril says he doesn't want to have to deal with another Earthian rights issue. That new guy, Taka-something, was really hounding him about that."

"Hah! New guy? Taka was one of the founding members, you know. He was the one who came up with the idea of having monsters that could disappear. Saved us the trouble of having to tame actual creatures to be fodder for the players."

"Yikes! That sounds terrible! I would never have joined the team if that's how you were doing things."

"Right? We're much more eco-friendly now. Although the mage department keeps complaining about being overworked for some reason."

"Good thing I'm a Conjurer, not an Illusionist. I guess it can't be helped since that affinity is uncommon."

"Yeah, and it doesn't help that people keep quitting too. By the way, the players having statuses was all my idea."

"Oh really? I thought that was Feyril's. He's the one always explaining it to players after all."

"Nah, Kazu-san's been on PR since the project started."

"Don't let him hear you call him that though. I heard someone say he's determined to live out his life as an 'elf'."

"Pfft. The next thing you know, someone'll be suggesting animal-eared folk too."

"You Earthians have weird ideas."

"Blame it on our literature. Anyway, you're getting paid because of our ideas, so don't complain. And go settle the monster issue already!"

"Oh yeah, I almost forgot about that! Talk to ya later, boss!"

"Sheesh, these Shyi'eldians are far too laid back."
