CHAPTER 4

The next 2 weeks passed with a blur.  Working a job at the Alchemy shop, while wearing the Ring of Atlas was taking a huge toll.  I was getting really tired of all this “other world” nonsense.  I just want to go home and sleep it all off.  Sure, I was getting stronger and learning new things, but sometimes, you just want to go to Taco Bell, order a crap load of food, eat until you’re completely full, and do absolutely nothing but watch TV afterwards until you fall asleep.  Being poor sucks.  I have a much greater appreciation for my parents.  I’ve never had to work or do anything in my life other than study.  Apparently, I was not suited for any sort of working career at the moment.

Anyways, I learned a lot of skills while I was here.  They were all basic skills, but they made my life so much easier.  “Those who master the basics are more likely to succeed in life.”  These small basic skills made it easier to move around and do things while wearing the Ring of Atlas.  Before the Ring of Atlas, I was hoping for some crazy, awesome skills that would make people look at me in awe.  By the end of the day, any little skill that made wearing the Ring of Atlas easier was more appreciated than even something like a Kamehameha technique from DBZ.  I’d rather be able to stand without a problem, rather than gain super saiyan abilities and be crawling on the floor in pain.

The first night in this world, I was having a lot of troubling sleeping.  I seriously considered removing the Ring of Atlas so I could sleep in peace.  I eventually decided against it, because if I took off the ring now, I don’t think I would ever put it back on.  Valdus wasn’t kidding about the pain and fatigue.  I hoped I’d be able to pass out soon, but it wasn’t happening.  I was just too uncomfortable.  Eventually, my door slammed open.

“Why the hell are you making so much noise?  Shut up and go to sleep already!!”  Shelby was pissed.  Apparently the walls are paper thin and she can hear me rolling around.

“I can’t fall asleep.  I’m too uncomfortable wearing this ring!”

“Then take it off already and sleep!”

“I can’t.  If I do that, I won’t ever put it back on…”

“You damn wuss, it’s just a gravity ring.” She sighed.  I bet she’d be singing a different tune if she was wearing this ring.  “Alright, I’ll give you a mild sleeping potion.  Hopefully, you’ll shut up and fall asleep soon.  Otherwise, I might end up killing you…”

Thankfully, the sleeping potion did the trick, and I was able to fall asleep.  When I woke up, I had received a few new messages.

You have learned a new skill!

Skill Name:Skill Rank:Skill Level:Basic Sleeping Mastery (Passive)CommonBeginner Level 3Through sleeping under pressure, you have developed the Basic Sleeping Mastery.  Normally, this skill developed through peaceful sleep at some point throughout their life.  People who develop this skill recover more of their stamina and energy.

Effects:

6% more Stamina is recovered when sleeping

As your level increases, it becomes proportionately easier for you to fall asleep

Your ability to naturally resist the Ring of Atlas increases as you sleep:  1.2%

I’ll be able to sleep better now so that’s a great skill.  When I’m awake, my resistance to the ring was less than a percent.  It was actually greater while I was asleep.  Thank God for small amounts of mercy.

The next time I got a skill or two is when I was working the next day with Shelby.  That woman varying from being extremely nice, to being a demon when working.  This woman… I think it might have been better that I didn’t accept this job.  I had no warning.  While I was working, she snuck up on me and stabbed me with a poisoned dart.  I fell over and started seizing.  I swore I was going to die, as it felt more difficult to breathe and my life start to slip away.  Then, before I croaked, she fed me a healing potion that she had made.  I felt my life return temporarily, but the poison was still active, and so my life started slipping away again.  She repeated the process of feeding me health potions over a dozen times.  Eventually, I received a notification.

You have gained Poison Resistance!

Your Poison Resistance has increased by 0.1% to a total of 0.1%.

Every time you are poisoned, that specific group of poisons are a bit less likely to affect you.

Your Vitality has risen by 2 for resisting death against a poison for 30 minutes.  Your gain was less due to being in a controlled environment and not resisting death on your own.

“Hmmm.  You are a lot weaker than I thought.”  She finally gave me the antidote.  “People from my world can shake this poison off after a few minutes with no risk of death.  You were laying there for thirty minutes, and I wasted a lot of potions keeping you alive.”

“Does that mean you’re no longer going to jump me with poison?  You could end up accidentally killing me.”

“Nope.  It means that I’ll probably doing it twice as often.  You’re so weak, it’s pathetic.  These poisons are like that ring.  It’ll hurt, but you’ll live in my hands.  If you ever decide to leave this city, there’s poison everywhere.  Most plants and animals have developed some sort of mechanism to survive.  That alone will kill you if you venture into the wild.  If I sensitize you now, you’re more likely to survive.”

“But doesn’t it cost a lot to do this?  You’re wasting so many potions!”  I was futilely trying to get out of more pain and struggle.

“Nah, it’s fine.  If you are going to work here, you are going to be handling poisons anyways.  You don’t want to be poisoned by your own poisons, right?  That’s the dumbest thing an alchemist can do.  All alchemists develop some degree of resistance to poison.  It’s an occupational hazard.  I don’t know how many times some idiot comes here to buy some poison, and then tries to poison me with it, so no one will ever find out who bought it.”

That sounds dangerous…her own costumers trying to poison her?  Wtf was I thinking when I took this job?

She saw the shock and dismay on my face.  “You know, you can quit whenever you want.”

“…………..I’m not a quitter.”

“…It took you a long time to respond…”  She was looking at me with disappointment.

“I was thinking about quitting obviously.  I don’t like quitting something I start, but who would want to work a job where your own costumers try to kill you on a regular basis?”  Sometimes people need to have the obvious stated to them.

“Oh, don’t worry about that.  You are safe here, for the most part.  I know how to handle those kind of people.”  She smiled at me, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.  “Let just say that they get knocked out by some poison gas, and then get used in my experiments until they eventually expire, never to be seen again.”  Woah, this person is DANGEROUS!  She basically admitted to torture and murder!

“So you torture and kill these people and expect me to stay?”  This woman was unbelievable.

She frowned at me.  “It’s in our laws.  Don’t worry.  Anyone who buys poison and then tries to kill its maker, isn't going to do anything legal with it.  I’m allowed to do whatever I want with anyone who tries.  I could give them to the authorities, or give them my own version of capital punishment.  Either way, they are going to die.”

This world is messed up.

“So anyone can just come in, and buy poison?”

“Of course.  If you want to survive this world, poison is an effective means to kill the monsters outside of the city.”

I think I’m going to get a headache again.

“Why are you helping me out this much?  I still don’t get it…”  I was really confused.  Her explanation didn’t make much sense to me.  I was obviously getting more out of it than she was.

She thought for a while, and then said, “I want to see how far you’ll go.”

“Really?”  She’s really nice!  No one has ever believed in me before.

“Nah, I’m just bored, and I want to test out and make new poisons.”  …I think I hate her.

“……”  No wonder nobody wants to work with her.  Well, being exposed to poison did increase my vitality, and she does tell me the truth, no matter how irritating it might be.

So life went on.  She put me to work, and gave me a few recipes on making basic potions.  Making these potions was a struggle because controlling my grip and maintaining finesse while producing potions was difficult.  Many of the potions would explode if too much was mixed in.  To reach a point where I could even do anything was difficult.  I kept trying and eventually gained 10 points of dexterity over time from repeated practice.  Eventually I gained a few new skills.

You have learned a new skill!

Skill Name:Skill Rank:Skill Level:Basic Alchemy Mastery (Passive)UncommonBeginner Level 1Through continuously mixing different potions and poisons, you have developed the Basic Alchemy Mastery.  If you have the ingredients, you have the ability to make healing potions, mana potions, and stamina potions.  As you improve your skills, you can make stronger and more variable potions.

Effects:

You can make:  Minor Healing Potions, Minor Mana potions, and Minor Stamina potions.

You have learned a new skill!

Skill Name:Skill Rank:Skill Level:Basic Handicraft Mastery (Passive)CommonBeginner Level 1Through continuous use of your hands under pressure, you have developed the Basic Handicraft Mastery.  Your capability to do activities that require fine use of your hands increases as this skill increases.

Effects:

Dexterity gain by 2

Permanent Ability to naturally resist the Ring of Atlas:  0.04%

The first skill will eventually be useful to make all sorts of potions, assuming I can learn how to do everything.  The second skill was another godsend, with the ability to resist the Ring of Atlas.  I really need to level these skills up so they get stronger.

A week later, she sent me on a task to retrieve some books from the library on the other side of town.  Apparently I had to come back in two hours, or else she’d use me as a test subject for her poisons all day.  I agreed to it because I really wanted to get out of the shop for a while.  I had already assumed that I was going to fail.  I (probably) wouldn’t die, but I don’t like feeling completely helpless like that for a long period of time.

She gave me directions and I walked there surely, but slowly.  At the rate I was going, I was going to make it back in six hours.  That woman must have known this.  I decided to try and push it, and tried to run.  It hurt my feet, but I would survive.  I looked like an idiot, and people were starting at me, but it was faster than walking.  After a short while, I received another notification.

You have learned a new skill!

Skill Name:Skill Rank:Skill Level:Basic Running Mastery (Passive)CommonBeginner Level 1Through continuous use of your legs to run under pressure, you have developed the Basic Running Skill.  Normally, to develop this skill, one must run continuously for a full day.  People who develop this skill use less of their stamina and energy while running than normal.  As this skill improves, the amount of time you can run increases and it takes less energy.

Effects:

2% Less Stamina is consumed when running

Permanent Ability to resist the Atlas Ring: 0.04%

Jackpot!  Another skill that lets me resist the ring.

After a somewhat long struggle, I finally made it to the library.  It was the biggest, most beautiful library I have ever seen.  It was almost like a cathedral for books.  In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I am the biggest nerd you will ever meet.  The library is one of my favorite places to go.  There are so many books to read, and it had stretched my imagination back on Earth.  Of course, spending all that time reading made me physically weak.  It was taking all of my effort not to stay here and read.  I really should have tried to find a job here.  If only I had known about the library in advance.  So many books, so little time.  I went up to one of the men at a desk.

“Hi, I’m here to pick up a number of books for Shelby.  Can you direct me towards someone who can help me?”

“Yes, I can help you.  Are you talking about Shelby, the owner of the Alchemy shop on the other side of town?  I believe we received an order from her the yesterday.”

“Yup, that’s her alright.  Where do I get the books!”

“Everything you need is right here.”  He gave me something that looked like a tablet.  “It’s all our newest research on different kinds of poisons that have appeared in nature recently.  She probably wants them because antidotes are always in great demand.  Either adventurers want to buy them, or our doctors, healers, and hospitals need them.”

“Wait…what’s the difference between a doctor and a healer?”  This was becoming kind of confusing.  “Aren’t they the same thing?”

“Ah, you are an Outworlder, aren’t you?  Yes, I see.  That’s why you don’t know already.  A healer is someone who uses magic to treat major or minor injuries and return the body to perfect working order.  A doctor is someone who evaluates and treats illnesses, using magic, medicine, or both.  Generally, the two professions have some overlap, and if you become one, you learn the other as well.  Anyways, here are your books.  Please give Shelby our regards.”

Damn, I really can’t help myself.  “Is it possible for me to borrow some books too?”

“Of course.  However, you need to be able to buy one of these tablets yourself.  A cheaper one allows you to borrow a book for a shorter period of time.  We magically infuse the information into the tablet, which you can read on the tablet, and after a number of days, the magic runs out and the book disappears.  The better the tablet, the longer the book can stay with you.  The best tablets we have can retain books for years.

Some people also have been known to make their own tablets.  We charge them a bit more for each book they ask for, but on the other hand, some of their tablets are able to keep the information for decades, so it isn’t a bad deal.”

“How much is a tablet?”  This was going to be very expensive.  I probably don’t have the money.

“You’re an Outworlder, right?  You don’t have the money, but you could always be charged in contribution points to the city.”

“What do you guys get out of that deal?  We owe the city, but not you?  What do people that help us out get out of this deal?”  This whole contribution point system seemed to be missing a few details.

“Let’s just say that the city owes us.  If we want something, we’ll have the influence to get it.”  Ah I get it.  If they want something shady done, the city will look the other way and help as much as they can.

“I see.  So how much does your cheapest tablet cost?”

“5 silvers.  Don’t expect it to last long, as the materials are very low quality.  Or you can pay in contribution points.  You could even get a better one.”  This guy was trying to get me to buy something more expensive so that the city would owe him more.

“Just the cheapest one for me please.  It should be 5 contribution points, right?”

“Yes, it is.”  He narrowed his eyes at me in annoyance.  He was definitely trying to milk as much as he could out of me.  “What books would you like?  Each book is a single copper to borrow.”

You now owe a total of 10 contribution points to the City of Ritvale.

Five for the tablet, and five for earlier, when I tried to go for training at the Training Hall and Magic Academy.

“Give me a book on the basic history of the world and what it is like right now.  I really would like to get my bearing in the world.”

“Ah.”  He smiled.  “I have just the book.  It should give you a decent outline of what you want to know.”

Even though the librarian was trying to get out of me as much as he could, he was still a competent and professional person.  If he gave me a book that I didn’t want, I would either never come back or get him fired from his job.  The library would be hurt either way if that happened.  They had to maintain a reputation for helping their costumers so they could keep the inflow of money and remain open.  He chanted some magic that infused the book into the tablet.

“That should last a week.”

“Thanks.”  I handed him a copper.

He looked at me with surprise. “I would have thought that your book would also be bought with contribution points.”

I snorted.  “Who is going to use a contribution point for one book?  A contribution point equals one silver coin.  There’s a huge difference between a copper and a silver.  A hundred coppers for a silver, right?  If I’m going to use a contribution point, it’ll be when I get a hundred books at once.”

“Clever one, aren’t we?  How did you get the money? I hope you weren’t stealing!  I doubt you found a job…”  He looked annoyed again.

“I did find a job.  I work for Shelby.”  I enjoyed how his face turned pale all of a sudden.  Apparently Shelby’s reputation preceded her.  That guy looked like he was going to wet his pants.  Maybe it wasn’t all that crazy for me to have taken a job under her.  It seemed like I was afforded some measure of protection from the people in this city.

“I…see…Please give Shelby my regards.  Have a great day!”  He was visibly shaken and couldn’t get away from me fast enough.  I think he realized he may have crossed a line with me, and was afraid of retribution from Shelby.

I was in such a good mood when I was on my way back from the library.  I had a new tablet with a book about this world, and I was able to run.  I didn’t even care that I looked stupid while doing it.  I was quite literally skipping on the way back home, jumping over small obstacles like cats in the street and small packages lying in front of shops.  I received another notification.

You have learned a new skill!

Skill Name:Skill Rank:Skill Level:Basic Jumping Mastery (Passive)CommonBeginner Level 1Through continuous use of your legs to jump while under pressure, you have developed the Basic Jumping Skill.  Normally, to develop this skill, one must jump across a greater number of obstacles in a row.  People who develop this skill use less of their stamina and energy while jumping than normal.  As this skill improves, the distance that you can jump increases and it takes less energy.

Effects:

2% Less Stamina is consumed when jumping

Permanent Ability to resist the Atlas Ring: 0.04%

On the way back, I also received a notification here or there about my running skill leveling up on the back.  Finally, I reached back to shop.

“What took you so long?  You better have a good excuse, otherwise I’m going to use you as a test subject for the rest of the day!”  It looks like Shelby was really irritated with me.

“Look, I got your tablet, with all of the books you requested!  I also got a tablet with a book on this world for myself!  I even obtained the running skill.  Next time, I’ll be even faster!”  I was too happy to realize that Shelby wasn’t going to be sharing in my enthusiasm.

“If you didn’t think you could do it, then you should have said so!  It’s been about four hours!  You even stopped and spent time getting yourself a tablet!  Do you know why you were given a time limit?  It’s because the hospital needs an antidote for a particular poison I do not know!  They need the antidote immediately.  Now help me with this, and I’ll deal with you later!”

Oh crap.

So we made the antidote as quickly as we could, and rushed it to the hospital.  Luckily, the patient was still alive and our antidote was able to do the trick.  It would take that woman a lot of therapy, but she would make it out unscathed.

When we got home, she took me into the laboratory, and I was sulking.  Before I had any time to react, Shelby had stabbed me with a needle, and I felt the poison start to run through my veins.

“This is the poison that woman was enduring while you were having fun.  I have been giving you dilute forms of weaker poisons every day.  As a result, I don’t think you have a proper appreciation for what we do here.  So far, you probably have gained an overall poison resistance of 0.3%.  This poison is a much stronger, undiluted version.  Don’t worry.  I’ll keep you alive, but this time, you are going to experience the full effects without the antidote.”

I was completely out of it.  I had a headache and was feeling very dizzy.  At some point during the night, I might have started having seizures.  Random notifications popped up repeatedly, but I was too out of it to pay any attention.  I think Shelby might have been pouring health potions down my throat the entire time, but I’m not sure.

At one point, I start hallucinating.  I saw things that I can’t even begin to explain.  They were all probably a figment of my imagination.  I saw something dark.  I can’t explain it in words.  It was trying to consume me and everything around me.  No matter what I did, I wasn’t able to stop it.

At some point, to retain my sanity, I opened up the Book of the Mind.  I started doing the puzzles.  I know this because the moment I summoned the Book of the Mind, it opened a room in my mind and everything became clear.  It seemed that the book was protecting me from what was happening to my body.

You have learned how to access the Book of the Mind!  In the future, all you need to do is think about entering this place, and you will.

Please state the group of puzzles you wish to work on.  You have 5 minutes to decide before you are ejected from this room.

I have nothing better to do, and I really don’t want to go back to reality.  There was the list of all of the available puzzles on screen on the wall of the room.

Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.

“I would like to try to solve the Beginner Elf puzzles.”  I wanted to see what kinds of puzzles other races had. It should be an interesting experience.

A piece of paper appeared in front of me.  There was some symbols that I couldn’t understand in a 3X3 table.  I can’t solve this puzzle.  I wasn’t written in a language I could understand!  Apparently I would have to learn the Elven Language before I could even begin to try this puzzle.  It looks like being a puzzle master is a real pain.  It looks like I have to go to the library to find a book on elven language.  Maybe I’ll look up some other languages as well.  I should probably look up some books on magic too.  If the mage academy won’t teach me right now, I should try and learn the basics on my own.  Maybe a geography atlas so I can get my bearings too.

“I would like to switch to Beginner Human Puzzles.”  If I couldn’t do puzzles for other races because I didn’t know their language, then I would go ahead and do the puzzles for a race I do know.

The puzzle changed to a simple riddle that I could read.  I read it and smiled.  If all of the beginner puzzles are like this one, I could breeze through them quickly.  I started answering different types of puzzles.  These puzzles didn’t require any special knowledge to solve.  Every time I solved one of the puzzles, I would receive the exact same notification.

Something within you has changed.

I had received this notification after I finished each puzzle.  I wonder what was changing inside of me.  I thought that I would receive notifications on increasing intelligence and wisdom when I solved a number of puzzles, but it never happened.  Apparently, the Puzzle Master title’s effect of increasing those attributes doesn’t carry over to the Book of the Mind.

Apparently, being a puzzle master was more than just putting pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together.  Yes, that was one of the puzzles I just answered.  It seemed that being a puzzle master meant finding the correct solution to any given problem.  Sometimes, it required logic.  Sometimes, it was attention to detail.  Sometimes, it was just detecting the underlying pattern to find the answer that worked.  Sometimes, it was all of those and more.  Being a Puzzle Master was like being a detective, you had to look at the big picture along with details to figure out the solution.

I don’t know how long I was out, but eventually I finished all of the Beginner Human Puzzles.  I received a notification.

You Have Completed All of the Beginner Human Puzzles!

Because you have unlocked all of the puzzles for this race, you have been given a unique choice.

You can accept each group of puzzles individually to undergo your changes immediately, or you can wait to finish all the current race’s puzzles before undergoing the changes.

You are given a choice:

You can immediately place into effect the changes that have occurred from solving all of the Beginner Human Puzzles.  If you chose this, you will not undergo the unique change.  This choice is recommended for those who don’t think they will be able to complete an entire race’s puzzles.

OR

You can wait until you finish all of the Human Puzzles for a unique change within.  If you chose this, the change will be somewhat different from the other one.  This choice is recommended for those who believe they will be able to complete an entire race’s puzzles in their lifetime.  These changes are unique and more than worth waiting for.

Please state your decision.

Now or later?  A unique change within?  I wonder what that is.  I really want to know.  My curiosity won’t let me off the hook.  I NEED to know.  I’m pretty sure I can pull this off.  I’ve already finished all of the beginner puzzles.  I only have the apprentice, journeyman, master and grandmaster human puzzles left.  If I keep going at that rate, I should be able to finish them all eventually.

“I’ll wait until I finish all of the Human Puzzles.”

Your decision has been noted.  Good Luck!

I decided to move on to doing some of the apprentice level puzzles.  These puzzles were far more difficult than the beginner ones.  Some of them, I was able to solve, and others, I had to skip.  It seemed like I needed specific skills to solve some.  One of them required me to find the one spot in a piece of clothing that I needed to fix, so that the entire piece of clothing would hold.

After I went through about 10 of those puzzles, I started to lose my concentration.  I slipped out of the room in my mind and back into reality.  I returned and felt all of the raw pain return in an instant and then disappear.  I almost passed out again, but managed to remain conscious.  I had a throbbing headache, but otherwise, I felt okay.  I saw Shelby looking at me with a relieved look on her face.

“Your finally back with the living.  I was worried that you might have received permanent brain damage when you went all quiet.  It made it easier to feed you though.”

I decided to take a moment to look at all of the notifications I had received in the meanwhile.

Your vitality has increased by 6.

Your endurance has increased by 3.

You have learned a new skill!

Skill Name:Skill Rank:Skill Level:Basic Consumption Mastery (Passive)CommonBeginner Level 1You were able to survive a precarious situation through continuous consumption of potions and food while under pressure.  As a result, you have developed the Basic Consumption Skill.  Normally, people develop this skill slowly over their lifetime.  People who develop this skill gain more of their stamina and energy after eating.  As this skill improves, the more energy is regained from eating and drinking.

Effects:

2% More Stamina is gained from eating and drinking

Permanent Ability to resist the Atlas Ring: 0.04%

Your resistance to poison has increased by 1%

Huh.  That’s not bad at all.  Painful and extreme.  But not bad overall.  I increased my basic stats, and spent a good amount of time solving Puzzles in the Book of the Mind.  I even got a skill.  The skill doesn’t feel all that useful, but who knows?

“I’m sorry.”  I froze.  Did she just apologize?  Did hell just freeze over?

“What?”

“I said, I’m sorry.  I might have overreacted.”  She was shuffling her feet.

“Might have?”

“Okay, so I overreacted!  Jeez!  Let it go already!”  Aww, she was cute when she was embarrassed.

“And what brought around this change?”

“I may have realized at some point that I never told you that someone was waiting for an antidote.  I might have also realized that you probably would have given far more effort had you known, or at least told me that you wouldn’t be fast enough and I would have sent someone else.”

“No. No, you didn’t tell me.”

“I probably also should have known that with that ring on, there was no way you could make it there and back in time.  I mean, I watch you every day.  It should have been obvious.”

“Yes, it should have.”  If she was waiting for me to contradict her at any point, it really wasn’t going to happen.

“Yeah, I’m really really sorry!  I’ll try and make sure it doesn’t happen again!”

“Try?  Really woman, you’re going to TRY?”  The nerve of this woman.

“I mean, it most definitely won’t happen again.”  At least she had the good graces to be ashamed of what she had done.

She left me to eat and sleep.  That day had been very tiring for me so I pretty much passed out immediately again.

The next day I started to read the book I obtained while working, and I discovered some interesting information.  With the book I got from the library and Shelby’s help, I was learning things here and there about this world over the last week.  This world is similar, yet very different from our own.  For example, they had toilets.  All I had to say about that was, THANK GOD!  On the other hand, the way the toilets works was far different from our own.  Something to do with water and teleportation magic.  I don’t know or care about the particulars.  They work, and that’s all that currently matters to me.  If you want to know, ask a artificer, not me.

Kitchens also look about the same, with some interesting equipment I’ve never seen before.  Shelby assures me that everything in there is standard, and quite legitimate.  I think she looked shifty when she said that.  Apparently, “simple” kitchens, similar to our modern Earth Kitchens, are the easiest to combine magic with to use.  In the past, before the Magic Age, they had highly sophisticated technology that outstripped anything we had on earth.  That all changed because of all of the pollution

On the outside, the world appeared to look like Victorian England.  The reality was quite different.  Even though it looked like olden times, the level of technology was fairly high.  There are many modes of transportation in this world.  People with a small amount of magic and a reasonable amount of money go around riding on horses, and other various strange looking animals, or carriages to get from one point to the next.  People who have both a lot of money and magic are able to vehicles that pretty make look like a sleeker, cooler versions of cars from Earth.  Each one is different because each owner has to make their own car so that it is completely tuned to themselves.  Apparently, lots of strong people learn how to be an artificers to get around faster.  Some people end had learned the technical skills and had the magic capacity to use flying vehicles.

Although the book mentioned it, those weren’t the only way to travel along the world.  Shelby wouldn’t elaborate, but there were skills that allowed people to travel just as fast.  It was up to people to find and learn them, if they were capable of it in the first place.

Everything was powered on Magic, and not gasoline fuel, nuclear energy, or electricity.  Magic was just the layman’s term for the certain amount of energy a person possesses that can be transformed into other forms for unlimited uses.  They had embraced and evolved their society towards magic use to stop polluting the planet.  Over time, the damage to nature and the planet had been reversed.

While there was no more pollution of the regular kind, a hundreds of years later, the existence of magic pollution was discovered.  This magic pollution is continually released by people using magic, and it affects the world in both good and bad ways.  Well, mostly bad ways.  To put in another way, for every one thing that has been randomly changed for the better by the Magic Pollution, a hundred things have been changed for the worse.  Hurray for this world!  That was sarcasm for those of you unable to pick up on that sort of thing.

Anyways, I read the entire book at different points throughout the day.  It was a short succinct book that talked about the world in general.  It talked about random things, but not details.  I think I’m going to go to the library every day or so and get a book to read.  I think it’ll be good for me in many ways.  It’ll improve my running and walking skills, and provide me with information about this world.

So another week passed, and I got better at Alchemy, which lead to some decent gain in dexterity.  Other various skills improved as I went on with my daily life.  I read a few books about this world that increased my wisdom and intelligence as well.  All of this, alongside the use of the Ring of Atlas, had lead to my current stats.
