In a castle barren of all life. Grand Halls, large dining tables, luxurious guestrooms. A castle, too high to reach, too wide to find the exit almost like a maze. A man sits on his golden throne. A man with unparalleled beauty and unmeasurable strength. A man named God.
He has existed for eons experimenting with life and his abilities. He was creating abominations that would soon roam the world waging battles with his other creations. His proudest creation was that of beings with high intelligence. He never looked down upon these types of creatures and gave them all a gift—the gift of Magic.
It is a gift that can rule others, alter reality, and be used for fights more than to help in daily life. Spells, enchantments, curses, and many more all run with Magic. With the monsters and vicious beasts inhabiting the planet, the ones with a weak body, can stand up against them with Magic and fight back.
However, after looking over them and nurturing them, he grew more and more jealous. Jealous of the challenges they had to go through. Life and Death situations. They were training to reach their full potential, several died along the way, but a handful managed to thrive. God couldn't help but be in awe.
He made his appearance look like his greatest creation, the humans. He wanted to feel what it was like to grow stronger, to fight monsters, and to feel pain.
He descended to his planet many times before. Every time he would try something new, he would excel at it, no hard work nor challenge. Being a God was a job he would not wish on his worst enemy. It was a job filled with boredom and despair. But somebody had to do it.
He wanted something new in his life. Something that would require blood and sweat, not thinking and headaches.
"Ah, shit. The king died. I was hoping he would do something that would get his name in textbooks."
The world that he was overseeing was one that excelled in magical technology more than anything. Schools for people with dreams of becoming an adventurer were more advance than the houses people took shelter. The kingdoms were in the medieval stages. Compared to magical academics, it was like night and day.
He got up from his throne and stretched his back. Then suddenly, the surroundings changed. The interior of a castle was now shifted in grasslands with a vast kingdom in the distance.
He took a huge breath and started to think out loud.
"I've had enough of this all-powerful godly bullshit. I can't even challenge beings without disintegrating them with a mere thought. It's time to be set free."
He crossed his arms then a shiny spherical metal ball appeared in front of him. It was floating and as big as his chest with a monitor like a screen for its big eye.
"Look's weird... but it'll have to do."
The floating metal ball then said
"Good day. How may I serve you?"
It sounded calm but was empty of emotion.
"First of all. I have to set a name for you."
He pondered for a while then jerked his head up to the floating ball with a bright expression.
"How about Cid? It sounds nice."
The ball responded with
"You can set my name to anything you desire, my lord."
"You can drop the formal names... just call me.... uhh...."
He dropped his head down and was rubbing his chin.
"You, my friend. Can call me Ulysses!"
He said with a joyful expression.
"As you wish, Ulysses," Cid responded.
Ulysses started to walk through the grasslands. He had a longing look on his handsome face that would make any person fall for him: man or woman.
Cid floated beside him, waiting for Ulysses' next order.
"Cid... I want you to take over the position of God."
Ulysses wanted to be a part of his world without any of his powers holding him back. He was planning to lose it all and make Cid a replacement for him.
Ulysses stopped walking and stared at Cid, waiting for his response.
"As you wish."
He smiled from the immediate answer. He intentionally made Cid cold-hearted because of the job of a god. It was too emotionally stressful, and it would drive anyone with emotions insane.
Ulysses smiled at Cid and said
"Follow me; I want to show you the world."
Ulysses started to fly while Cid was floating beside him.
They both flew over kingdoms, valleys, waterfalls, and other beautiful landscapes. Even though Ulysses had seen them over a thousand times, he couldn't get enough of it.
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
Ulysses would also explain what Cid's duties of being a god would be. He didn't have to, but he needed someone to talk to like a friend.
Soon they would go over areas where horrific war's had taken place. They could see ashes and blood in sites like these. Ulysses wanted to stop them from ever happening, but that would also mean restricting their freedom.
Ulysses started to lament over his decision to sacrifice his divinity over a stupid decision. But now there was no going back.
This day was the last day of him being the most powerful existence in the universe.
"Well... I was never a good one. Now I'm running away like a coward."
No man was perfect. Not even a god. He made mistakes and stupid decisions. Many that severely impacted the world.
Ulysses gave a lonesome sigh while flying over to their last stop.
At the end of their trip, Ulysses sat on the mountain ledge, viewing the clear blue sky and a breathtaking view of a valley and forests. Time stopped moving ever since Ulysses and Cid roamed the world, so it was still daytime.
"You're the first one of your species, The Robots. Designed to follow commands obediently and with no question."
Cid without any hesitation replied,
"Correct. I would never dare to disobey my creator."
Ulysses looked at Cid with a smile,
"And what if I command you to disobey me?"
Cid paused for a second then said,
"Then, I would follow your command. By disobeying it."
Ulysses laughed softly but heartedly.
Ulysses laid his back on the soft grass, looking up to the clouds.
He had done this many times before, but it felt different somehow. With a companion like Cid, it was a more wholesome experience.
"Cid... I'm going to descend to this world and lose my abilities and my title. If I die, I want you to find someone you think is worthy of being God."
Ulysses got up and stretched.
"Maybe one of the humans. Their kind is pretty preserving."
Cid stayed silent while staring at Ulysses.
"Something wrong, Cid?"
"N-nothing is wrong. I will do as you command Ulysses."
Ulysses tilted his head with a concerned look on his face.
"You stuttered... tell me what you're thinking."
Cid stayed silent for a while then responded.
"I'm sorry... You caught me off guard when you brought up the possibility of your demise."
Ulysses was also caught off guard by Cid's response. He didn't like the fact that he was showing emotions.
Ulysses shook his head and dismissed the idea of taking away more of his emotions. He hoped his decision wouldn't backfire in the future.
"The last thing I want you to do, Cid."
Ulysses' face turned grave.
"If there's ever a time where a catastrophe would endanger all life on this planet. A disaster that would challenge even your expertise, give me a portion of my power as a final resort."
Cid's voice sounded serious.
"If you were to use even a fraction of your power. There's no possible way for you to survive the after-effects."
Ulysses smiled and had a sad look in his eyes.
"I value this world more than my life Cid. If I ever die, please don't bring me back. Find a worthy god and serve that person. If he or she ever decides to turn his or her back on this world, then strip that monster's powers away and find a new candidate."
Cid reluctantly responded,
"As you wish, Ulysses."
Ulysses turned to face the forest that was behind him, and speak to Cid one last time.
"You can return to the castle now. I assume you know it's location."
"Yes, I do."
Ulysses looked at Cid one last time.
"Goodbye, my friend."
Cid responded with a depressed but with the usual snappy voice.
"Goodbye to you too. I hope we could meet again."
Ulysses was surprised by Cid's sudden remark.
"Yes... I hope so too."
Ulysses smiled and watched as Cid flying back to the castle.
"Ahh fuck, I may have given him a little too much emotion."
----------------------------------------
"Okay, one last thing to do, making a body to inhabit."
Ulysses waved his hand, then a mirror showcasing his entire body appeared in front of him.
Ulysses took a good look at his face. Even he got attracted by his beauty.
"On second thought, I'll just alter my capabilities... and my face, of course."
Ulysses' face shined a bright light, and after it dissipated, his heaven-defying looks crumbled to a face no one would remember.
His face looked young like someone in their twenties going through depression.
His once slim and perfect jawline morphed into a chubby one.
His dreamy eyes lost its color and turned to a dull brown one and had dark eyebags, almost like he didn't sleep for days.
His dark shiny hair lost its glow and was a mess like someone was on a bad hair day.
"Maybe I can make it a little older? I'll just stick with this one."
Ulysses looked at his clothes and scoffed.
He had an attire that a child pretending like a king would wear.
He had a white shirt, shorts, and a red cape that Ulysses tied to his neck.
"It's too comfy to let go of... all of us have to make sacrifices, I guess."
Ulysses frowned and thought of an idea for what to wear.
"Eh, I don't want to think about clothes right now... I'll just copy what the people made."
A similar light shined all over Ulysses' body. After it went away, his funny childish-looking clothes transformed into something that would fit an adventurer.
He was wearing a worn-out leather type armor with sleeves, leather pants, and long boots.
He also has a sheath for his dual wield iron sword.
"I'm pretty much all set... I'll just have to add my Unique skill now."
"Only those strong enough can awaken them. Since I'm a God, I'll just skip the hard work. It seems ironic to skip the hard work, but I want to have fun in this world to the fullest extent."
Ulysses' was deciding which ability he would give himself and was in thought for a while.
"Ah! I know. The power to see an object's info!"
Ulysses rubbed his chin and nodded.
"I'll call it Appraisal, and it lets me see the stats, name, age, and abilities of a certain object."
"I guess... time to.... time to get rid of them."
Ulysses closed his eyes and focused.
He was deep in thought, almost unconscious.
In his head, he was in a dark room.
"Huh? Where am I? and what's that figure?"
Ulysses could see someone glowing in the distance.
Ulysses tried to walk to it but he couldn't
"What the hell?"
The figure started to move towards Ulysses. It got close enough for Ulysses could see who it was.
"Th-that's me?"
The figure went in front of Ulysses and touched his forehead with two of its fingers.
"Hey, what are you-"
The figure cut Ulysses off suddenly by giving him a sensation he had never felt before.
It was tingly and an unbearable feeling.
Pain
And too much of it.
Ulysses started to scream with all his might, screaming in pain.
He closed his eyes, trying to bear it, but all he could do was cry and go through with it.
"STOP! NO, GET AWAY FROM ME."
Ulysses, for the first time in his life, felt powerless. He couldn't stop what the figure was doing to him.
Then the figure pulled back its fingers.
Ulysses fell to his knees, almost collapsing and saw the figure walking back.
Then in the real world, Ulysses opened his eyes.
His eyes were glowing a bright yellow that outshined the sun.
He felt the same pain from the figure made him feel coursing through his body.
He screamed in pain once more that could be heard from miles away.
Ulysses felt like he was about to burst.
Then the next thing he saw was him falling from the mountain from an explosion.
End of chapter one.
