Chapter 8: Magic

Reading through the book with Ennis, I understood a few of the basics.

Apparently, every human has some form of magical energy, but it’s still rare to have enough for someone to cast spells.

It can be broadly classified into four categories:

[Battle magic] --- Anything related to hurting a target, or defending from such attacks [Summoner’s magic] --- Calls a beast or item out [Light magic] --- Often related to healing or priestly actions, but it can also be used to illuminate.

That seems to be the kind of magic that the weird priester guy used on me while I was in pain.

The last one is called: [Creation magic] --- The ability to create new magic spells by manipulating the very fundamentals. This type, however, is Archaic, which is why the individuals that can possess and use Creation magic can be counted on two hands so to speak.

Secondly, to even be able to use magic, you will need two things:

Energy paths that spread out all over your body that are strong enough to channel magical power, and use it as well without weakening or destroying the user.

These pathways exist in every human and are hereditary, but the strength and width of them determine how much power a person could possess.

They take formation when the individual is about three years of age, but they aren’t completely finished with construction until at the age of sixteen, which is the same age as adulthood in this world.

So theoretically, I should be able to cast magic.

Another important aspect is the ability to weave magical threads.

A magical thread is a type of invisible, intangible energy that can be woven together with other threads to create complex spells and magical effects.

Practitioners must be able to select and combine threads to create complex spells and magical effects, requiring a great deal of skill and precision.

To do this consciously is to master the fourth type of magic, Creation magic.

However, no one can bind magical threads intentionally, and use incantations or magic circles instead.

“then, do incantations allow the user to subconsciously form created magic spells...?” I muttered.

“Huh?” Ennis hummed.

“A-ah, it’s nothing. Oh, hey, look at this over here.” In an attempt to steer the conversation away, I tapped my finger against a rather interesting page.

“’Create a rock’..?” The young child uttered.

The page contained rather simple instructions on how to use your gifted magical abilities for the creation of rocks. It seemed too easy, too simple to be true. But then again, we were just children, and maybe this was the kind of magic that we were capable of.

“I’ll go first, then.” I declared.

I stood up, anxiety resurfacing in the back of my mind again, held my hand in front of me, and closing my eyes, I focused on the magical energy flowing through my body, and imagined it pooling in my right hand.

Then, I recited the words on the book.

"From earth and stone, with power unknown, form in my hand, a rock to command!"

As I continued to channel the energy, I could feel a weight and pressure building, as though something solid was forming within my grasp. The sensation grew stronger and stronger, until finally, I opened my eyes to reveal a rather large piece of rock plopping down on the wooden planks of the room.

While Ennis sat there with an expression of amazement, I slowly retracted my hand and looked at it in disbelief.

“The book says that the rock was supposed to be the size similar to the size of your hand, but yours is more of a big ball!” He yelled out in excitement.

“Ahaha, thank- aah!”

This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.

Suddenly, an unbearable pain struck my heart and stomach, and I fell to the ground in agony. It was like a powerful blow, overwhelming my senses and leaving me gasping for air.

“A-are you okay?!” Ennis shouted with a certain panic across his face.

I had felt the same feeling that had struck me before my reincarnation, though that was a cardiac arrest.

“I-I’m fine... Aaah...!” The pain left me no time to think about it’s cause, but it was most likely related to the usage of magic in such an early age.

“Hang in there, I’ll get an adult here and you’ll-”

“Don’t!” I yelled out.

“Who knows what they’ll do if they discovered us here...” I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, focusing on slowing down my breathing. As I calmed down, the throbbing pain in my chest began to ease up, like a receding tide. I could feel my heart rate slowing down to a more regular rhythm, and the tension in my body gradually loosened.

“See? I'm getting better already,” I said, trying to hide the pain in my voice.

Ennis sighed in relief, and immediately reached for the book just a few seconds later.

“Wait.” I said.

He turned around. “What? I also want to try it.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but promptly closed it.

This could be a chance to understand more about how magic works for children.

There was a two year age gap between us, which means our bodies are at different stages of development when compared.

It could also be interesting to see how Ennis would cope with trauma to the heart, if he’ll get it anyways.

...How low have I fallen... I asked myself after I realized what I was thinking of.

“Are you sure about this...?” I asked with a weak tone.

Ennis looked at me with a determined expression. "I want to try it, Finian. I want to see what it feels like to use magic."

I silently nodded.

Ennis's hand trembled slightly as he spoke the incantation, and I could sense a hint of fear in his voice. But he remained focused.

He closed his eyes and focused on the magical energy flowing through his body.

Then, he recited the incantation that I had used before.

"From earth and stone, with power unknown, form in my hand, a rock to command!"

As he spoke the words, I could see his hand glowing with a faint magical light. He continued to channel the energy, and I could see a small rock beginning to form in his palm.

And then it grew.

And it didn’t stop growing.

Something went wrong. The rock grew too large, too fast, and before we knew it, it had exploded from his hand like a cannonball. The sound was deafening, and I felt the shockwave ripple through my body.

I gasped in horror as the rock shattered the wall, sending debris flying in all directions.

Before I realized, a piece of stone was heading straight for me, barely avoiding my forehead as I instinctively ducked.

Ennis stumbled backwards, clearly shocked by what had just happened.

I rushed over to him, checking to make sure he wasn't hurt.

“I-I...” The poor kid stuttered for a moment.

“I didn’t want to do that...”

I held his shaken hand, and looked at him in the eyes with a smile.

“I know. It’s okay.”

At the same moment, Sophia and a few other caretakers rushed over towards the scene of crime with swords and staffs drawn in anticipation against an imaginary enemy.

“Ennis, and Finian?!”

When they saw us, however, their expressions turned to one of confusion and concern instead.

Sophia ran straight over to us with an embrace.

“Are you guys okay?” She said, checking for any signs of trauma on our bodies.

“Sophia...” One of the caretakers called as he pointed towards grimoire.

She looked at the Grimoire, and then looked at the big rocky ball next to it, and shifted her attention to the hole in the wall.

“...Boys, did you practise sorcery in here?”

Ennis looked downward, and I stood in silence.

“I need to know which one of you recited the spells in the book.” She asked, more firmly this time.

“...I created the ball right here, and Ennis created the hole.”

“...I see.” She muttered.

I grimaced. “Please don’t punish us for using magic or destroying the wall. I’ll help Ennis fix it...”

“Oh no, you boys won’t get off that easily.”

She said with a bittersweet smile.

“You’ll both be receiving an education to control your powers.”

“I had a feeling Ennis was some kind of prodigy by the way he acted, but Finian as well?” Raphael asked Sophia, his eyes narrowing in contemplation.

Somehow, Raphael had been able to sleep through the commotion that we created.

Sophia smiled awkwardly, darting her gaze all over the room.

“Ahaha... at any case, are they allowed to train with your students?”

Raphael's gaze swept over us in scrutiny, his single hand caressing his mouth and chin as he pondered. Finally, he let out a deep sigh.

“They’re too young to attend in the same classes as the others. Normally a child awakens by the age of eight or nine, and though six isn’t unheard of, Finian should have been dead under normal circumstances. No child could have gone through that successfully.” He concluded.

Raphael’s gaze went back to me, the corners of his mouth raised upwards.

“Well, no ordinary child anyways”.

I couldn't help but smile bitterly. I knew I wasn't ordinary. I wasn’t even supposed to exist in this world.

I never really gave it any thought, but wasn’t I deceiving everyone by lying about my identity, or about who I really am?

But then again, Raphael says that I should have died back then. Maybe there is a purpose for me in this world...

“And you,” He said looking at Ennis, his voice stern. “the spells that you cast aren’t supposed to be this strong, you scoundrel!”

Ennis flinched, but then started laughing as Raphael playfully rubbed his head, making the boy yelp and squirm. We all laughed along with them, but Sophia quickly brought the focus back to the matter at hand.

“So, Raphael, what will it be?”

The man stopped head-locking and torturing the child, and responded swiftly to the question.

“I’ll tutor them privately, on seperate hours. They have too much potential to just be thrown away.”

I gulped.

I didn’t hear that much praise since the death of my... My mind wandered off to the past.

I shook my head.

I screwed myself over in my first life, I can’t afford to do that in this one.
