Prologue - Comfort into Despair

Prologue - Comfort into Despair

Today is a day for comfort, spring had just come into full bloom. The snow had ended its reign for the year and the trees were budding. The grass was growing and the air held a warm breeze, telling tales of what is to come this summer. It was Currently 4pm on May the 14th, 2025.

Walking down the street with a spring in her step was Kara, wearing a black skirt that came to her knees and a red blouse. Her hair was a rich auburn colour that paired well with her warm amber eyes.

She had just escaped the prison known as "School", where the walls are cold and the windows are filled with that mesh steel. At least they dont have bars across them. This would be Kara's last year in high school and she was glad of that, she prefered to spend her time day dreaming of adventures and fighting terrifying monsters. Exploring vast unknowns that fill the hearts of many with the urge to know what is on the other side of that veil.

Kara was of course a young woman now, having turned 18 only a couple months ago. Her parents held hopes in their hearts that Kara would do well once she had graduated from school, though they feared she would spend all her time daydreaming at work much like she did at school.

It only took a few more minutes and kara was at her favourite park, it was a fairly small and tucked away place that a few of the nieghbors had put together a few dacades ago. They had planted trees and put in a small pond where there was once just a field of grass.

The trees had grown since and were quiet large now, enough so that she could hang a hammock between them. Here she found comfort in reading outside while the weather was accommodating enough to allow it, just as today was. So just like many other days, Kara began to read her book in peace and quiet, falling asleep after many hours of reading.

As it so happens, you wont always wake up where you fell asleep. So it appears to be for me, tonight I found myself laying beside a crack in the world. It was no simple crevice, heat boiled the water out of the air as it rose from this chasm. The sweat on my face vanished as soon as it appeared. Rising to my feet should have been impossible, same with surviving this inferno, though i had no time to consider any of it.

There was a rumbling coming from behind, I felt the earth quaking beneath my feet. Fearing what was behind yet knowing no way forward; I turned. A mass of black blotted out the sky, a mountain that once held a forest on its shoulders was now set ablaze. Molten rock flowed out like the tears of a mother weeping for her lost son, ash rained down a blanket of grey as if to comfort those it buried, and at the top of all of this was a figure. Clad in fire and ash, and rock. His foot steps leaving a trail of fire set in stone.

This being did not wander aimlessly, he was coming down from the very top. An impossible feat among men, though clearly he was no man. And I appeared to be his target, for his eyes looked into mine, as though he was claiming me. Fear filled my heart just as much as curiosity filled my mind.

"Do not fear, child. I have not come to harm all in my path, though many today will perish at my coming. For it is in my nature that as i walk forward, those behind me burn. Today only those at the feet of my mountain up untill where you stand shall suffer this fate, as i have chosen you."

Kara, hearing these words spoken to her as though the nameless being coming down the mountain was right in front of her, felt little comfort in the words yet. She was lost, not undersanding what was meant. Confused at how the words reached her. Magic? It only took a couple minutes for the being to be face to face with Kara. Stretching out its hand, the being placed a finger on her forehead.

Burning, that was all she knew untill her eyes came open once more.
