CHAPTER 14

[Pelica, Terror of the Night Sky, Witch]

[Human Empire, Klenneth—Mansion of Serra]

I stood by the front of the gate. It was a massive gate.

A mansion was beyond that gate, made with an extensive amount of decoration that could make your eyes blind if you stared at it long enough. The mansion in front of me belonged to the Noble House of Serra, a benefactor of the Demon Territory after the peace treaty that happened 500 years ago.

My left hand was holding a letter to deliver, and my right was holding my pointed cap and broom.

“Excuse me~”

I asked the guard standing next to the gigantic gate. He was the common guard you’d see in a human city. One of their features is that their clothing depends on which city you’re currently in. This guard, in particular, was wearing light armor because of the relatively hot climate of the place.

The guard looked around to see where the noise might have come from.

I jumped a few so he could see me in his peripheral vision. Once he noticed me, he bent his body a bit to get down to my height.

“What do you want, child? If you’ve lost your parents, then there’s a barracks there for you to ask how you can get home.”

“Aha?”

Child...... how rude of him to call me as such.

“Can’t you see my clothes? Ahhh...... humans these days.”

“Hmm?”

The guard investigated me with his lecherous eyes.

“Geez, if you’re going to stare at someone like that, can’t you be less intense? Despite my appearance, I’m a proper lady, you know?”

He frowned for a while before coming to a realization.

“A witch?”

“Bingo!”

“What might a witch be heading here for? Is there a business you might be attending to? I have not heard of anyone coming here, let alone a witch. The place is quite busy at the moment. You can return later if you’d like.”

“Hmm~ hmm~”

I showed him the seal of the letter I was carrying.

“This is a matter between the Demon Lord Sitri and the Noble Head of Serra. It’s a private message to put it lightly. If you see this as a fraud, then do receive all the repercussions of this message being late.”

“Ugh. Tsk. You may go in. Just remember, though, if it is a fraud, then I’m not the one to be punished.”

“Hehe~ Appreciated~”

The guard opened the gate with a resigned look while I eagerly waited to hop through. It’s good to see people with common sense.

I passed through the front door and was met by a cluster of people inside. The hallways of the mansion were busy. If someone were to say how busy it was, it would be as busy as a market. It was so busy that you could bump into someone if you were going to space out, even with just a fraction of a second. It is a tiresome place to navigate.

I asked around for the Head of Serra’s location and wandered around for a while before someone led me to a room in the middle of the mansion.

A servant opened the door for me.

“Are you sure about this Demon Lord Seere? Despite the insistence of Demon Lord Sitri?”

Upon entering, a beautiful woman sitting in front of a man with horns was talking to each other.

“Serra, this isn’t her business. I’ve had my gripes with that annoying noble for quite a while now. So, what do you expect me to do? Let him run like some chicken gawking his mouth all the time?”

“Having me take care of the silencing of your own representative...... such a brutal Demon Lord.”

“Ha. This is nothing.”

The ones talking inside the room were two people. One of them had blond hair and sat elegantly on an ornate chair, sipping on tea, whereas the other had gray hair with a stern face. They talked for a while and didn’t even notice me walk in. They chattered about trade routes, resources, and all the boring things that aristocrats talk about all the time.

I’m a person with patience. Yes, yes. That much is evident from all my 300 years of living. But......

“Ehem!”

I made a loud noise.

They looked at me. Both Demon Lord Seere and the Head of Serra stopped their talk altogether.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

I intervened in their little chat. Was I rude? No, they were taking their time talking, so it is only appropriate to intervene. I’m bored, so it isn’t so uncommon for me to break that boredom.

“Pardon me~”

“HAH!? Who the fuck might you be!?”

Demon Lord Seere exclaimed.

“Apologies for my disgraceful act. This little witch is here upon the request of Demon Lord Sitri. You see. She’s tasked with delivering this.”

I walked towards them and handed the letter with grace.

Demon Lord Seere snatched the letter from my hand and began to read it. He made an unpleasant face and handed the letter to the Head of Serra. She knit her brows while reading the letter.

“It is quite logical to silence some of the representatives, but also to plan the silencing of a Demon Lord……”

“That fucker is a wimp. Don’t mind that. We’re cleaning up our tracks. Do you suppose we let him spread the word? He’s a traitor of traitors. Even traitors have standards. Plus, that fucker is quite cunning. He even used his own son as a decoy when we expected him to arrive at De Gracia much earlier.”

“Still.”

“It’s Sitri’s words. Not mine.”

Demon Lord Seere shrugged.

The Head of Serra folded the letter and placed it down on the table.

“How about Demon Lord Barbatos? Wouldn’t she get involved if we started to target other Demon Lords? It is rather scary thinking about it.”

“Sitri is the one moving here. I doubt she’ll get caught. Even someone like Barbatos would find it hard to track her down.”

“I hope that’s the case.”

Oya, oya? Do they really think I’m not listening? How should I go about this?

They’re talking about disposing of a Demon Lord—someone who has the title of one of the highest in the demon territory, like it’s nothing. If these were any other people, then they would be beheaded on the spot.

Demon Lords are demon-kin that were chosen by the Demon Monarch herself. Not just anyone can get this high of a title. If the Monarch were a deity, then Demon Lords were kings and queens serving that deity. To talk about them in such derogatory words, even if you yourself are a Demon Lord, is not an insult to the Demon Lord you insulted, but to the Demon Monarch herself. The Monarch takes pride in each of the Demon Lords, no matter how low other demons deem them to be.

That’s why there’s a strict rule for not letting Demon Lords fight each other. Even if they were to fight each other, there should be a solid reason behind such a thing. But, but. I’m not finding any noteworthy reason here other than pettiness.

Well, that’s not my problem now, is it~?

“Oh, honorable ones, there is still one more letter.” I extended my arm. “A message from the guest mansion of De Gracia, Miss Serra.”

I gave another letter. This time, its seal was something else even I couldn’t recognize.

After some small strategic positioning of my head, I could take a glimpse of what’s in the letter.

‘The mice have been eradicated. The goose is complicit. He’s proposed to secure his safety with the knowledge of his father.’

Mice? Goose? What’s this?

The Head of Serra then handed the letter to Demon Lord Seere. He tilted his head while his eyebrows created a hill and a valley, a strange way of trying to comprehend what was in the letter.

“Agnh? What the fuck does this mean?”

“Seems like everything went fine. But his son wasn’t taken care of, I believe.”

“The one ambushed in the carriage? So that means your personnel are goddamn incompetent? One thing was for him to be rescued by someone from the useless mercenary you hired, but for him to survive this too? This is getting funnier by the second.”

“It could have been that he was nearly killed and begged to be saved.”

The Head of Serra pointed at the letter.

“Look, the wording says it. Complicit. He’s under us now. We can use him to lure out his father. This is an advantage, not a mishap on my part.”

“Whatever you say.”

Demon Lord Seere fixed his posture.

“If you’re going this far to defend that brat being alive, then I expect you have something he’s worth taking part in.”

“Yes, Demon Lord Seere. That is correct.”

The Head of Serra gave a smug look. Demon Lord Seere continued to crease his brow—it was now a mountain and a trench.

“Little witch, Demon Lord Sitri has sent you, correct?”

She faced me.

“Why yes, Miss Serra. Though my alliance with her is merely contractual.”

I bowed my head.

“That means I can trust you to work with me too, correct?”

“Once the delivery of the letter has been deemed to be received by the receiver, then it is possible.”

“Then let me accept the letter, and I’ll task you with something. How does that sound?”

I tipped my head in acceptance and gave her a stamp made for accepting received packages.

She smiled at me and stamped the letter. While doing so, she also grabbed a piece of paper from the tabletop where the tea was put and wrote something on it.

“Now, what I’ll ask of you is relatively simple. Go to the guest mansion of De Gracia and find someone named Deilos, and give this to his servant.”

“His servant? Not the person named Deilos himself?”

“Yes.”

The Head of Serra produced a pouch from a drawer and gave me a gold coin along with the note.

“I see. Upon receiving this task, this little witch will act upon it with all her power to do so without fail.”

I bowed elegantly.

“The sky is our territory, and we shall govern it with our might. As a member of the Terror of the Night Sky, may it be in harshness, in pain, or in death, this little witch will take care of your inquiry.”

After declaring my acceptance of a new task, I promptly walked outside to address it quickly.

Another letter delivery. Well, what can I do? Despite my current work being as an errands girl, it gets stale when you’re tasked with another one immediately after the other. It isn’t tiring per se, just mildly boring once it gets too monotonous, though getting from one place to another is quite a fun experience.

Traveling to De Gracia from here would only take about a few hours flying on my broom, depending on the weather, at least. It’s already noon since those two talked for about 3 hours on end—a painful 3 hours.

“Hah~ when will the requests be more interesting?”

I looked at the paper in my hand and stared at it while walking towards the exit.

A letter to a servant......

Such a weird task.
