Miyoko was a plain girl, and she was okay with that. She had medium length black hair, black eyes, was around five foot, three inches, and completely normal proportions. She was average, plain. She didn’t care about her looks at all, but compared to her best friend, Monomi, she was a plain bagel next to a donut with icing.
Monomi was everything a pretty girl was expected to be, tall, yet somehow light, curvy, but not chubby, long hair, that was curly even! She was the perfect girl!
That came with a great curse. Everyone in the world noticed it. Old, young, boy, girl, dog, cat, octopus, everyone noted her beauty. Miyoko did too, everytime she saw her, her full lips, her smell, her kindness...
Miyoko was in love. She knew it. But girl’s loving each other wasn’t the most appreciated thing in Japan, so she had to hide her feelings. She was content with being her crush’s best friend.
The school year had started back up. Miyoko and Monomi were second years, and being best friends and neighbors, they had the luxury of walking to school together.
Monomi seemed to be a ball of light, almost like a star, Miyoko noted. Monomi was a morning person, unlike the girl who wanted to take a nap on the curb. Or the grass, wherever she fell down on.
“Miyoko!” The curly haired girl waved her friend over, who sleeply walked into a streetlamp. Monomi laughed. It was the same thing every year, Miyoko needed time to get used to being up early...at least she didn’t walk into a manhole this time.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
“Good morning!” Monomi beamed.
“Gurh moornin.” Yawned the plain bagel.
“Pardon?”
“Good morning....” She started to walk to school, Monomi followed.
”I have a request...it’s a little embarrassing...” The tall girl looked nervous for, from what Miyoko could remember, the first time in her whole life.
“Eh...? What is it?” Miyoko was curious.
”I...I need you to defend me.” Miyoko stopped, and looked over at her friend.
“What?”
“I....I don’t know why, but boys seem to want me...they want to take me on dates and get me nice things....which is jive and all but...” She sighed, “They just want my body and not...me...”
“Sorry, what does that have to do with defending you?” Miyoko asked. That was a bad thing? Of course, boys rarely talked to her. Even her dad didn’t talk to her that much, but she couldn’t blame him, he was in prison, after all.
“I want you to defend me from people who might have....lewd intentions.” Monomi covered her face. Miyoko was silent. This was perfect! A dream scenario! She could get all the boys away from her crush, and keep her to herself! Through secondary school, anyhow.
“Consider it done!” Miyoko said, her toothy smile appearing on her face.
Monomi looked through a parting of fingers on her face. “R-really? Can...I rely on the Miyoko Defense Force...?”
”The...the wha...?”
”I’m calling you that.”
“It’s not really a force if it’s just one person, but yeah. I’ll defend you.”
Monomi wrapped her arms around her new protector. Miyoko turned into a tomato, and smiled.
“Thank you....”
”You’re crushing me.”
“You know you like it...” Monomi stuck out her tongue. Miyoko has to admit, she did like it.
