Mirror Thief
The first reflection

The first reflection

A tiled room, white. The blackness of the shower door, and the tinted glass filling it, grey. The bath adjoined on the back of it not really seen when walking in, white like the tiles below and beside it. The toilet jutting out from behind the sink cupboard, harsh against the dark cabinet. light fixtures shining down from the ceiling, softly for now. Fluorescent light illuminating the white tap and glass handles. A towel rack on the opposite side of the shower, matching the black of it’s frame. A window at the end of the room, to open up and let the breeze in- and let the unpleasant smells out. A bathroom, with a mirror on the wall.

Hung underneath the pale painted untiled ceiling, a silver framed piece of reflective glass. Silently still above the sink, suspended in place, staring back at the tiled wall and bath across from it. A circular unassuming thief in the home.

She walks in for the first time, keys in hand, the house now hers. She pauses in her inspection of the bathroom, smile on her face, and looks into the mirror. A brief moment passing as her eyes meet with her own eyes reflected, her smile only growing fuller and her eyes only widening further. 'It's mine' she whispers to herself in a tone of disbelief. Then she's gone, the door shut behind her brown. The bathroom stays silent, the whisper of the breeze against the window almost inaudible as the wind shifts by, and yet something still stirs in the silence. The peace of the house stayed unbroken, and yet slowly a thief awoke.
