Chapter One

The beginning of the Age of Magic

The Age of Magic began a few hundred years ago, in the year 1058. What exactly caused it is not known, but what is known is that the Core of our world, Avernias, suddenly opened up and began pouring a new resource into this world.

Mana.

It is the lifeblood of magic, and without it, no form of magic would be possible. The creatures who were blessed with the ability to manipulate this new resource were known as either "Magic-Born", or as "Mages", depending on their sentience. The Magic-Born were simple, and fairly understandable. They were simply the beasts of the world that had gained the ability to manipulate Mana, and had begun passively improving themselves with it, using their instincts and unknown talents. This made them stronger, faster, harder to kill, and, in a few rarer cases, elementally charged. This, for example, allowed for things such as "Frost Wolves" to appear in the north, which were fast, durable, and ice aligned creatures. Just like wolves, they could be tamed, and multiple people living far north ended up with them as pets.

What was notable about them, other than being an entire sub-species of Magic-Born, was that they were so thoroughly aligned with the ice element that their attacks would cause frostbite, and they were unnaturally resistant to the cold. There were multiple other forms of such kinds of creatures, natural species, twisted by magic to be resistant to certain kinds of harm, while also dealing said harm. But, however, life continued on. Very few things changed, though a few villages fell to the sudden influx of more dangerous creatures, and one small city was notably damaged beyond recovery, although a large portion of it's people survived and fled to other settlements nearby. Despite these things however, again, life continued. Very little changed.

Then the Mages appeared.

It started small. Children capable of causing sparks on command, people who were slightly better at persuading people to do minor things, just small, local things that were not that notable. Then it got bigger. The children who could make sparks got stronger as they grew, and began being able to make small fires. The people who could persuade and bargain better, got better at it, and harder to resist. Random villagers figured out how to throw strange ingredients into pots, stirring and cooking them up to create elixirs of various styles. Some would cause a deep rooted yet short duration poison to rush through the body. Others could mend just about every injury, although they had limits to how much they could heal at once. Yet others would grant vision in the dark, while others would make you faster, or give you the ability to breath water. Then, it was figured out.

It was the Mana. And the people who were manipulating it, were like the Magic-Born beasts. They, like the beasts...

Could use magic.

This revelation sparked a golden age. Mages became stronger, kingdom funded, and more common. Searches for these rare Mages began throughout most kingdoms out there, because those who controlled magic after all... could control so much more. The first mages gained more knowledge, began to teach the younger mages, who in turn would grow old and teach the next generation what their teachers, and themselves, had learned. It was a snowball effect. Whereas the first Mages only knew what they had learned themselves, the next generation knew their own knowledge alongside the knowledge of the first mages, and the next generation learned their own knowledge, and the knowledge of the previous generations, and so on. It only got more extreme, to the point where the oldest and the most learned Mages had become so powerful, that they were living hundreds of years older than any other creature, they were nigh impossible to harm, and they could manipulate almost any element, perfectly.

And thus, started the Age of Magic.
