Chapter 1- A Sudden Catastrophe

Chapter 1- A Sudden Catastrophe

It had been a cold, dull morning as was the usual in this place, I stood at the edge of the alleyway, watching the soldiers pass, on one side of the main market’s street walked the prim and proper soldiers, dressed in that magnificent blue that stood out against the dull grey of the walls, their silvery armor and steel weapons shining from the lights high above my head, on the other side were the more relaxed soldiers, their black cloth made them seem a lot more dangerous, not helped by the fact that it was accentuated by the black steel of their own armor, the blue’s and the blacks, is what we called them, each party careful to avoid the other,

I carefully and quickly made my way along the back of the stalls, luckily those same lights cast a dark shadow to the back of the stalls making it easier for me to be unnoticed,

‘what was I in the mood or today’, I thought, ducking under one of the tables as the shop keep turned to get something for one of his ‘paying’ patrons, off to the side of the table a sack of bright red apples hung in a netted sack, as quietly as I could I cut the side of the bag, stuffing three apples into my shirt, good thing it was three sizes too big, no one would be able to tell, I slipped from under the table moving onto another stall,  I rounded the corner only to hear the one voice I didn’t want to,

“well good morning, ya little thief”, the voice sounded, I looked behind only to see one of the blacks, a soldier I had become all to familiar with, Godric, I felt a huge tug on the back of my shirt, and soon my feet were off of the ground,

“I swear, I go to buy my breakfast and who do I see stealing at the back of the stall”, Godric said, putting me down,  I folded my arms looking away from him,

“shouldn’t you be at the self defense school, I bet those two are wondering where you ran off to”, he questioned,

“that’s where I was going, and I didn’t steal anything”, I said,

“oh really then you wouldn’t mind If I did this”, he said, grabbing me once more and flipping me upside down, the three apples fell to the ground rolling away from us, my oversized shirt falling over my face, revealing the knife I had sheathed in my belt,

“ geez, landonne, a kid like you shouldn’t be running around with dangerous weapons like these”, Godric said, gently dropping me onto the stoney floor,

“I don’t want to hear that coming from a rotten adult like you”, I shouted to him,

“besides, you have a sword and bow, whose the dangerous one here huh”, I continued,

“  why you, I have these for my job”, he shouted back,

“ohh, I didn’t know you needed such dangerous weapons to be a drunk”, I said  laughing at him,

“ugghh I swear kid, you give me a new headache every morning”, he said picking up the apples off of the ground and handing them to me,

“hey I thought these were stolen”, I said to him taking them out of his hands,

“ I won’t tell if you won’t”, he said, giving a slight chuckle, “besides I already paid for them”, Soon after the bell rang through the air, I Waved Godric goodbye running off to school,

By the time I got to the school gate it had already been closed, but that wasn’t a problem a for me, The School was surrounded by  tall grey walls, but what the sister nuns in charge didn’t know were that they was a hole dug out underneath to the far end of the wall, just big enough for me to fit, it had been my secret entrance for a while now, I took out the three apples, sticking one in my mouth, that would be mine, and holding the other two in my hands, crawling through the space under the wall until I made out the other side, before I crawled out completely I looked around, the cost was clear, I carefully made my way along the wall, heading straight for the open window, when I remembered that my class would be on the second floor today, standing under the window I looked,

“Sven, Sven”, I tried shouting as quietly as possibly, I knew he would be at the window, when a head full of orange hair, with a brown face with freckles and brown eyes popped out looking down,

“dude, your just in time, Sister Theresa isn’t here yet”, he shouted down,

“oh really here catch”, I said tossing up the two apples, “before you ask I got them from the market, Godric paid for em”,

“great but how are you gonna get in here”, he asked, I grinned widely, rubbing my hands together, I held my index and middle finger together on both of my hands and touched my feet at their sides,

“Hover”, I said, my body felt light and my feet lifted off of the ground, I remember what Godric said about using this spell, I had to concentrate on where I wanted to go and on floating at the same time, I began to gradually float upwards until I got to the bottom of the window, when I felt my body dropping back to the ground, Sven reached his hand out just in time grabbing me before I fell,

“what  the hell, I didn’t know you could use base magic” Sven said, his eyes bright with wonder,

I still held the grin on my face, “yeah Godric taught me, though I wasn’t suppose to let anyone know”,

“hmm, that drunk made himself useful after all”, Sven said his nose up in the air, I looked behind Sven, the frail looking white haired girl sat next to us lost in her own world,

“Lyanna, Lyyyaaanna”, I said into her ear, she looked around, her eyes as white as her hair, she seemed like a fairy in the stories the sisters told us, here eyes and hair as white as snow, and her skin a warm brown as though it were made of glass, she seemed magical, not of this world,

“here” I said, pushing one of the apples towards her, taking a bite out of my own, she frowned when looking at me,

“Landonne, I hope you didn’t go stealing again”, her voice always sounding on the verge of tears,

“not today, Godric bought them for us”, I said,

The door to the classroom flew open, in walked sister Theresa, followed by two more people, The first one was a tall man in dark glasses, he wore the same uniform as Godric, only more fancier, and behind was what I could only describe as a goddess, if lyanna was a fairy, she was the queen of them, her hair was as white as lyanna’s but her eyes were a cold piercing blue, Our eyes met as she scanned the room, before continuing in conversation with the sister, As their conversation went on Sister Theresa’s face grew more and more worried, The doors burst open once more, in ran a man who looked worried, he wore the same uniform with a red bandana around his head, he spoke to the two other soldiers, and all three of them rushed through the door,

“Children, Children, hurry and come to me now”, Sister Theresa called, Something felt off, Something felt wrong, we all made our way to the front of the class, The next thing I remembered was something knocking me to the ground, they lamps that lit the classroom went out, but it wasn’t dark, something else was lighting the room, I tried to get up but slipped on something,

“Sven did you, throw away”, I began to say but stopped, I looked over my shoulder, my eyes widened and filled with tears all at once, the classroom was gone, crushed, one of the large stalactites had fallen and at the edge of the ruble laid sven, I was next to him, his blood pooling beneath my feet and hands, I turned crying, trying to pull him out of the ruble,

“Sven, Sven”, I cried, his orange hair dirtied with dust,

“Sorry landonne, I didn’t mean to push you” he said, holding onto my hand with the one hand he had free,

“come on, I can get you out”, I said, moving what pieced of rock that I could,

“hey don’t worry abut me, look, Lyanna is there, you know how she is, carry her out, im sure the sisters will come get me”, Sven said, a smile on his face,  I looked behind to see lyanna regaining consciousness, confused, the building groaned and creaked around us, loud sounds of metal clashing filled the air, another explosion went off, shaking the entire building,

“Landonne go, get her to safety”, Sven said, his voice strained and weak, I rushed to my feet silently, taking Lyanna’s hand and running through what once was the classroom door, A loud crash rang out behind, the roof where we were collapsed, but I didn’t stop running, I gripped onto Lyanna’s hand even tighter, we made it outside the school, but what we found was despair, the ceiling had collapsed on both sides leaving a narrow pathway, from the direction I could tell it was close to the gate, I ran, looking back, making sure Lyanna was still there, behind us explosions went off again and again, shaking the entire ground, as we ran the ceiling collapsed behind us, faster and faster it fell, but we were almost there, we were right there when I felt Lyanna’s hand slip from mine, she had fallen,

“landonne”, she cried, the loudest I ever heard her frail voice, I turned around, reaching out my hand, but before I could save her the ceiling fell, cutting us off from each other, and sending me flying through the end of the pathway,

I opened my eyes, an orange light bounced off of the usual cold grey walls, the sound of metal beating against itself filled the air, a familiar person came into view floating high above me, Dr. Avolandis, he shot off spells that led to massive explosions, with the shadows that he was fighting, he swung the sword he usually kept at the side of his desk, he would pick it up from time to time when he told us stories about when he fought in the war, or when he showed us a spell, but his was the first time I’d ever seen him use it, I pushed my self to my feet, trying to make my way over to the collapsed pathway, another explosion rang out, I found my self further away from the pathway than where I was just now, the side of my body ached and burned,

I opened my eyes again, this time the goddess with the silver hair,

“Lyanna”, I whispered, my eyes barely staying open,

“Jud, he’s still alive, go get Saryllia”, she shouted, everything had quieted down now,

“what is your name ?, I’m Zora, we’re going to help you”, the goddess said,

“La…L…landonne”, I said weakly,

“Captain, we have to leave, Sasiria spotted General Valantis headed to our current location”, A voice shouted out, soon a tall man with dark shades appeared in front of me,

“Fine, but we’re taking the kid with us”, She said,

“Captain, he’s going to slow us down”, The man in shades said,

“I’m not taking no for an answer, in fact this is an order, we are taking this kid with us”, she shouted,

“umm, guys sory to say but we don’t have time for this”, A softer, more gentle voice said,

“fine, but zora, you owe me a week of lunches for this”, the man in shades said,

“okay great”, she said,

“Saryllia, great, heal him while we retreat, Jud put him on your back, Pyris, and lymaria, you’re in the front, Karakishi you’re bringing up the rear, and sasiria, cover me jud and saryllia, Alright soldiers move out”, She shouted,

“YES CAPTAIN”, a slew of voices shouted in unison,

I felt my body being slowly hoisted into the air, the last thing I saw that day before I lost consciousness was long silver hair surrounded by blood and ice,

10 years later

Landonne opened his eyes, , he wondered why he was remembering the day he met her, he rolled out of his bed, sitting on the edge, he looked out of the window as the wind blew through it slightly ,he softly smiled to himself, then he remembered that she had wanted him to meet her in her office early in the morning, he glanced at the clock on the wall, he had slept pass the time that he was suppose to be in her office, Landonne darted from the bed, throwing on his uniform and ran out of the door
