A Michfied Exodus
Prologue
*sniff* *sniff*
The midnight sky was filled with dark black clouds shrouding the Earth in shadows. The air smelled of an impending storm. It was the kind of night that would make you want to pretend to sleep if you had to.
*sniff*
A small girl, alone in her room wrapped in a blanket, her eyes red as she wipes them once more. This would be a sad sight if you ignored the fact that she was just watching anime in the dark and was damaging her eyes in every way possible.
“The people on the forums were right, Demon Beats, what a truly formidable foe.”
She had just finished watching a marathon of Demon Beats after being dared online to try finishing it without crying. Just as she finished, walking across her screen was a little maid.
“Hurry up and sleep! If you don’t have rest, how are you going to have the strength to play the new VRMMO that’s launching tomorrow?”
The maid was an AI created by her brother, a playboy genius programmer who enjoyed “seeing how a human reacts under certain conditions.” In short he was a terrible manipulative human.
Michiko, on the other hand, was an introverted person who studied diligently in order to get good grades. She had turned 18 this year, and was a senior in high school. She was 5 feet tall, had a slightly frail build, light brown eyes, and long wavy jet black hair. Her life motto was, Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi which stood for, “no peak, no fall, no meaning. In short, if nothing good happens then nothing bad can happen either; life is meaningless.
With her unique alarm modeled after [REPLACE here] even those with lack of sleep would be fine. She got up and started her daily routine. First she fixed her bed, then went to the bathroom to shower and brush her teeth. She went back to her room to put her uniform on, and went down to eat breakfast, just like any other normal day. Needless to say she looked at herself in the mirror and mad a sad face as she checked up on her ‘growth’.
“Hmph. Nii-san once told me not to worry because a flat chest is a symbol of status” she said this but didn’t believe him at all.
However, today slightly differed from other days. It was the day the new game titled “Exodus™”, would be launched worldwide. The game was developed by the most advanced AI of all time. Five years in the making, using all games popular and unpopular from the last century as references. It was dubbed a miracle game, a game that would change gaming experience forever.
Like most of the rich ‘hardcore’ gamers, she had pre-ordered the game and all the necessary equipment to play it. All she had to do was get through the day at school, and it would be smooth sailing from there. She already had her name picked out, her class, and even what she wanted to do before she even started.
Due to her small physique, most would expect her to be playing as a support class, however, she had different plans. It took a while, but she managed to decide on Dual Wielding Broadswords, with Magician as her secondary class to strengthen her swords and allow them to be imbued with elemental properties in battle.
The reason it took her so long to decide, was because every class you could imagine was available in the game, she had to pick one main class at level 10, and at level 200, she gets access to her secondary class.
It was said to be one of the most outrageous ideas in games. Imagine a priest fighting upfront instead of standing in the back healing, or maybe even a necromancer that wasn't squishy, or even having a dancer as a main source of damage The possibilities were endless.
As soon as she was ready, she left for school. As a senior she already had her license, but her parents were nice enough to afford a driver to take her to school and the minor issue that her legs didn’t extend far enough to touch the pedals. Although the school was only a five minute drive away, they wanted her to be safe. As the driver pulled into the student parking lot she saw the government’s final recruiting effort. There was a sign with big bold black letters that said “Gamer Recruitment”.
As luck would have it “Exodus™ Online” was to launch on a worldwide scale.
It was due to the nature of the game, and the objective: raise your level, conquer new lands, set sail towards unconquered territories and establish your kingdom.
As dumb and cliche as it might seem, this was virtual reality, we are talking about a second world, and many countries saw that as their opportunity to redeem themselves, or even to get revenge. Due to this, every country was engaged in a wild recruitment campaign for gamers in order to build and strengthen their virtual army.
Someone called out to her as she walked by.
“Hey you! You look like a gamer how would you like to fight for good ol ‘merica? I can promise you will be paid accordingly depending on your performance in game, hell, we’ll even provide medical, dental, and life insurance.”
‘There they go again with their crap. I don’t give a damn about fighting for the pride of my country in a virtual game. All I want is to grind, level up, get some badass armour and maybe even meet a cute ouji-sama. It would take more than that to sway my decision.’
“Sorry, not interested” Michiko answered and walked away.
She slowly approached a pair of automatic doors. When she walked through, she saw students walking in groups while having a conversation in the hallway, couples walking to class together, and teachers yelling “The bell is going to ring soon!”.

‘My last year in this shithole, when this is all over, I can watch all the (BL) anime and play all the (ero-)games I want. (duhuhu)’
She walked towards the hall where her first class was, and after walking 5 minutes she arrived, she was surprised at the scene that greeted her.
Chairs and desks were pushed along the walls, and in the middle of the class was a big map, with the teacher standing on one side explaining the beginning areas. She also explained her hypothesis as to where good hunting grounds would be located in proximity of water, food sources, and shelter.
“Michiko, you are welcome to join the class today at the launch.”
“I’m sorry but I haven't bought the game yet Coach Johnson.”
Looking annoyed Coach Johnson responded.
“Your brother told me that you’ve got one of the first 100 manufactured copies in the States.”
‘Thanks bro, thanks a lot.’ She thought.
Now annoyed Michiko retorted.
“Oh? So was that where he was last night?”
Blushing, Coach Johnson backed off.
“What a tool. I bet she thinks she’s better than us. Let’s hunt her down when the ban for player-killing is lifted.” The class raged.
All except one girl, Luna Eidos the class outcast, and candidate for weirdest girl of the year based on the schools underground website. She was quietly sitting in the corner of the classroom drawing while reading some weird comic with two guys on the cover page, of course I recognized it but there was no point announcing it.
‘I wonder if she’s going to play the game. Well I doubt it. She doesn’t seem like the gamer type.’
Throughout the day, none of the classes were held. Class time was used for strategic meetings that covered every aspect of time game. A day ingame was 6 hours in real life.
The school had planned time for meals, bathroom breaks, and even offered excused absences to those who wanted to devote themselves to the game. But these students were also given homework.
When the bell signaling the end of the day finally rang, all hell broke loose. It was as if someone had pooped in the pool, and everyone was evacuating.
Bodies collided with one another, feet were stepped on, while others were trampled. No one cared. They wanted was to get home as quickly as possible and prepare for the worldwide launch that was held later that day.
Michiko sat in silence as she knew that would happen. Thinking she was the only one in the classroom she started to hum an old tune from a movie she had watched when she was younger.
She was startled when she heard a chair slide behind her and saw Luna get up and walk out of the door.
‘What the hell! I didn't even notice she was still there’
Soon, she started to gather her things and was about to leave when Luna walked back in.
“Please take this” She said giving her a note sealed with a heart shaped sticker.
‘.....’
“Ummm, Thank you.”
‘What the hell am I supposed to say?'
“So..... Are you going to play Exodus™ Online?” asked Michiko nervously.
‘Wow why the hell did I ask someone I barely know about a game. This is why I’m a loner’
“Yes, I will start playing today” Luna answered in a shy small voice.
‘Wow shes so cute. Screw my motto if she wasn’t so weird, I would definitely try to be friends.’
“Oh, ok well if you want you could give me yo—”
Luna didn't even let her finish her sentence, she simply walked away.
‘Well that went well...’
Not wanting to run into Luna again, she delayed her departure for a few minutes. She then walked out of the school premise, towards her car.
