Chapter 56: Fight For Survival

Chapter 56: Fight For Survival

Aurelia barely wriggled out from the tightening coil of the snake, her small, larval body slipping through by mere inches. Her soft skin brushed against the rough, hard scales, but the narrow escape allowed her just enough space to scramble away. Her legs worked frantically, instinct driving her forward, but no matter how fast she moved, the snake was always just behind her.

The forest floor trembled with the serpent's massive movements, each shift of its body sending ripples of dirt and leaves scattering in all directions. Aurelia's entire being pulsed with a primal urge to survive, her thoughts racing as the snake's cold, predatory gaze locked onto her again. She was no match for it. It was too fast, too strong, and far too experienced.

Behind her, Caelum lay gasping for breath, his body weak from the venom that still coursed through his veins. His eyes fluttered open, catching brief glimpses of the chaos unfolding before him, but he was too drained to do anything but watch. Aurelia, his only companion, was now facing the snake alone.

I have to... fight, Aurelia thought, but doubt clawed at her. Her movements felt slow compared to the snake’s fluid grace. She wriggled faster, aiming for the snake’s exposed underbelly, but every time she got close, the serpent reared back, its fangs glistening in the dim light.

The snake lunged at her, jaws wide open, moving with terrifying speed. Aurelia jerked to the side, barely dodging the strike. The snake’s fangs snapped shut, missing her by mere inches. The ground where she had been moments earlier exploded with dirt and debris as the snake’s head slammed into the earth.

Aurelia felt a jolt of fear shoot through her. She had no real offensive abilities—her sting was weak, and she was too small to inflict any real damage on something so massive. But if she could keep it distracted, just long enough for Caelum to recover, maybe—just maybe—they stood a chance.

The snake hissed in frustration, its long body twisting and coiling as it realigned itself for another attack. Aurelia wriggled around in frantic circles, trying to throw it off balance, but the snake was faster, its movements fluid and relentless. The predator was playing with her, toying with her in the same way a cat toys with a mouse before the final strike.

Focus... focus... don’t stop moving... Aurelia told herself, but the pressure was mounting.

Suddenly, the snake lashed out again, this time with its tail. The thick, scaled appendage came down with crushing force, slamming into the ground next to Aurelia. The impact sent shockwaves through the earth, causing her to lose her footing. She tumbled head over heels, her tiny body spinning uncontrollably as she was thrown to the side.

She hit the ground hard, the wind knocked out of her. Dazed and disoriented, she tried to regain her bearings, but before she could recover, the snake was on her again. It struck faster than she could react, and its body coiled around her, trapping her in a suffocating grip.

Aurelia felt the crushing pressure as the snake’s powerful body wrapped around her, squeezing her tighter and tighter. Her soft body contorted painfully under the weight, and she could feel the strength draining from her limbs. The air was forced out of her lungs, leaving her gasping for breath.

Caelum... She called out through their telepathic link, her thoughts a desperate plea. She knew he could feel her pain, but she also knew he was too weak to help her.

The snake’s grip tightened, and the world around her seemed to close in. Her vision blurred, and the edges of her mind began to fade. Was this how it would end? Crushed under the weight of a predator that was far beyond her ability to fight?

No, she thought, a surge of determination rising within her. I’m not done yet.

With one final burst of energy, Aurelia twisted her body, forcing herself to wriggle free from the snake’s crushing coil. Her body ached, bruised and battered, but she managed to slip through the tight grip. She hit the ground, writhing in pain, but she was free—at least for the moment.

The snake hissed, frustrated by her escape. It reared its head, preparing to strike again. Aurelia could feel the tension in the air as the predator coiled its body once more, its eyes fixed on her with deadly intent.

But she was weakening. Each escape left her slower, and the injuries were building up. Her movements, once frantic and precise, were now erratic, her tiny legs struggling to keep up with the snake’s relentless onslaught.

The snake lunged again, its fangs glistening with venom. Aurelia darted to the side, avoiding the bite by a hair’s breadth. But the snake’s tail was waiting for her. With a powerful swing, it lashed out, striking her full force in the side.

The blow sent her flying through the air like a ragdoll. She slammed into the base of a nearby tree with a sickening thud, the impact knocking the wind from her lungs and leaving her dazed and disoriented. Her vision swam, the world spinning around her as she tried to regain her senses.

No... not like this... Her thoughts were sluggish, the pain overwhelming her.

The snake slithered closer, its massive body looming over her like a dark shadow. Aurelia could barely move. Her body ached, her strength fading with each passing second. The injuries were too much—she couldn’t keep up with the relentless assault.

I can’t... I can’t do this...

The predator's eyes gleamed with malice as it prepared to deliver the final blow. Its body coiled once more, its fangs bared as it hissed in victory.

Aurelia, panting and beaten, tried to crawl away, but her body refused to cooperate. She pressed herself against the base of the tree, her breath coming in short, painful gasps. The weight of her injuries pressed down on her, each movement sending waves of pain through her small form.

She glanced back toward Caelum, her vision blurry. He was still lying on the ground, barely moving, his body weak from the poison. He was alive, but only just. And here she was, unable to protect him, unable to even protect herself.

The snake reared back, its fangs glistening as it prepared to strike.

I’m not strong enough... she thought, despair creeping into her mind. But a faint spark of determination still flickered inside her. She wasn’t done—not yet.

With a strained wriggle, Aurelia forced herself to move, dragging her battered body back toward the tree for what little cover it could offer. The snake hissed again, its patience wearing thin.

As it slithered toward her, ready to finish what it had started, Aurelia’s body screamed in protest. Her movements were slow, sluggish, and the snake was gaining on her fast.

I won’t let it end like this... she thought, her mind racing for a plan. But there was no time. The snake was too close.

With a final, desperate lash of its tail, the snake slammed into Aurelia, sending her flying once more. Her small body crashed into the tree with brutal force, the impact jarring her to the core. She crumpled to the ground, unable to move, her vision fading as darkness closed in around her.

Caelum... she sent one last thought, her mind filled with desperation.
