Abduction

James Ward sighed as he packed his things into his worn-out backpack, the reality of his final high school day sinking in. He glanced around the classroom, taking in the familiar sights that had become a backdrop to his teenage years. The empty desks, the faded posters on the walls, and the chalkboard covered in half-erased doodles all felt strangely poignant. Life was about to change.

“James!” Lilly’s voice rang out, snapping him from his reverie. She bounced up to him, her pink hair bobbing with each step. Her blue eyes sparkled with the excitement of the day. “Can you believe it’s really over? High school, I mean!”

James smiled, albeit a bit wistfully. “Yeah, it’s surreal. Just yesterday we were clueless seventh graders.”

Lilly laughed, a melodic sound that had always lifted his spirits. “Speaking of clueless, have you decided on which university you’re going to?”

“Albion Academy,” James replied, zipping up his bag. “They have an incredible program for future weapon technologies. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.”

“Future weapon technologies, huh? Sounds intense.” Lilly leaned against the desk beside him. “I haven’t made up my mind yet. I’m thinking about taking a year off to travel and figure things out.”

James nodded. “That sounds like you. Always the adventurer.”

Just as he slung his backpack over his shoulder, a whirlwind named Angelica barreled towards them. Her arms wrapped around both James and Lilly in a tight embrace. “I’m going to miss you guys so much!” she declared, her voice tinged with genuine emotion.

“We’ll miss you too, Angie,” James and Lilly replied in unison, sharing a chuckle at their synchronicity.

Angelica’s boyfriend called out to her from across the hall, and she reluctantly let go, giving them one last smile before dashing off.

James and Lilly walked down the hall towards the parking lot, the echoes of their footsteps mingling with the scattered conversations of other students. “So, last walk through these halls, huh?” Lilly mused, her tone a mix of nostalgia and excitement.

“Yeah,” James agreed, looking around one last time.James and Lilly walked over to his motorcycle, a sleek black machine with polished chrome accents. James grabbed his helmet off the handlebars, and Lilly did the same, her pink hair spilling out as she adjusted it.

“Ready for one last ride home?” James asked, securing his helmet.

“Always,” Lilly replied with a grin, fastening her own helmet.

James pressed the start button, and the crystalline engine glowed a vibrant blue, casting an ethereal light around them. The soft hum of the engine filled the air as they mounted the bike. James felt a rush of anticipation mixed with a tinge of sadness. This routine ride home marked the end of an era.

They took off out of the parking lot, the wind whipping past them as they sped through the streets. James couldn’t help but think about how everything was about to change. College, new people, new challenges—he felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty. The familiar scenery blurred past, each landmark holding a memory of his high school days.

When they finally pulled into James’s driveway, he parked in the garage and turned off the engine. The blue glow faded, leaving only the warmth of the afternoon sun.

“Thanks for always taking me home,” Lilly said, removing her helmet and shaking out her hair.

“No problem, especially since we’re neighbors,” James replied with a smile. “Besides, I enjoy the company.”

Lilly laughed and waved as she ran across the road to her house, her helmet swinging by her side. James watched her go, feeling a sense of comfort in their routine, even as it was about to end.

Stepping inside, James was greeted by the familiar scent of his mother’s cooking. “Hi, Mom,” he called out as he walked into the kitchen.

“Hey, sweetheart,” his mom replied, stirring a pot on the stove. “How was your last day?”

“It was…weird,” James admitted, leaning against the counter. “Kind of sad but exciting at the same time.”

His mom smiled warmly. “That’s normal. It’s a big change. Your dad’s at work, but he’ll be home soon. He needs to check over your college supply list letter.”

“Right,” James said. “I’ll get it ready for him. Thanks, Mom.”

James headed upstairs to his room, thoughts swirling in his mind.

He changed into his Lancaster Hornets soccer uniform, the familiar yellow and black giving him a sense of purpose. Today was the last practice before the big game this weekend, and he needed to be at his best.

“One step at a time,” he told himself, grabbing his gear. “Focus on today, deal with tomorrow when it comes.”

James headed back to his motorcycle, the crystalline engine glowing once more as he started it. The ride to the soccer field was a time for him to clear his head, the rhythm of the bike beneath him a comforting constant.

When he arrived at the field, his teammates were already warming up. He parked his bike and joined them, determined to make this practice count. As James entered the field, he spotted Coach Bevens intently looking over the schedule, his clipboard clutched in one hand. The coach’s graying hair and stern expression were as familiar as the field itself. James felt a wave of nostalgia wash over him.

“About time you got here!” boomed a voice from across the field. Mick, the team’s towering six-foot-two-inch goalkeeper, waved a gloved hand at him. His grin was as broad as his shoulders.

James jogged over, shaking his head. “Oh, come on, Mick. I’m only fashionably late.”

“Fashionably late? More like leisurely slow,” Mick retorted, laughing. “You’re lucky we don’t start without you, superstar.”

“Yeah, yeah,” James said, rolling his eyes. “Just try not to let any balls through today, alright?”

“Ha! You wish. Nothing gets past me,” Mick replied, puffing out his chest in mock pride.

Their lighthearted banter continued until Coach Bevens looked up from his clipboard and blew his whistle. “Alright, team! Huddle up!”

James and Mick exchanged one last grin before joining their teammates in the huddle. The coach’s serious gaze swept over them, making sure he had everyone’s attention.

“First game of the season is against the Sparrows,” Coach Bevens began. “They’ve got a strong lineup, but we’ve been training hard, and we’re ready. Today, we’re focusing on a few key plays. Pay attention.”

Coach Bevens pointed to the clipboard. “First, we have the ‘Hornet Sting’—James, you’ll fake left and pass right to Liam, who will drive it up the field. Mick, be ready for their counterattack. Second, we’re working on the ‘Buzz Blitz’—a fast break where Alex will sprint down the right wing, crossing to Daniel in the center. Timing is crucial here.”

He paused, looking around at his players. “Lastly, the ‘Swarm Defense’—everyone falls back and closes in on the ball. No gaps, no openings. Got it?”

A chorus of “Yes, Coach!” echoed across the field.

“Good. Now get into positions and let’s start practicing!” Coach Bevens commanded.

James moved to his spot, feeling the familiar rush of adrenaline. As the whistle blew, he faked left, executed a perfect pass to Liam, and sprinted down the field. The team moved in sync, each player knowing their role and trusting each other.

Alex was a blur of speed as he dashed down the wing. “Over here, James!” he called.

James passed the ball to him with precision, watching as Alex crossed it to Daniel, who narrowly missed a shot at the goal. Mick was already in position, ready to defend against the incoming counterattack.

“Great hustle, team!” Coach Bevens shouted. “Again!”

The practice continued, each play honed and refined with every repetition. James felt a deep sense of camaraderie and determination among his teammates. This wasn’t just a game; it was their last season together, and they wanted to make it count.

As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the field, James wiped the sweat from his brow. “One step at a time,” he reminded himself. “One goal at a time.”As James finished packing up his gear, the sound of hurried footsteps across the field caught his attention. A woman, moving with a determined stride, was heading straight towards the team. The atmosphere tensed immediately, a palpable shift that didn’t go unnoticed by anyone.

“Miss, you cannot be on the field!” Coach Bevens shouted, his voice laced with a mix of concern and authority. He stepped forward, attempting to intercept her, but she moved as if she hadn’t heard, her eyes locked on James with an intensity that made the air around seem charged.

“Who is that?” Mick muttered, his eyes narrowing.

“I have no idea,” James replied, his brow furrowing. “But she looks serious.”

Two security guards, stationed at the edges of the field, sprang into action. Their movements were calculated and swift, aiming to intercept the intruder with practiced precision. The first guard reached her, his voice firm and commanding. “Stop right there!” he barked.

The woman didn’t falter. Her stride was unfazed, her eyes still fixed on James.

“What the hell is going on?” Liam whispered, glancing around at his teammates.

“No clue, but this doesn’t look good,” Alex added, his voice low.

In an instant, the scene erupted into chaos. The second guard, taking a more direct approach, grabbed her shoulder, attempting to restrain her. What happened next was a blur—a swift yank of her arm freed her from his grip, followed by a lightning-fast kick that sent the guard sprawling. He landed with a heavy thud, his body limp and unconscious before he fully hit the ground.

The team and onlookers watched in stunned silence. The reality of her capabilities was becoming terrifyingly clear.

“Holy crap, did you see that?” Mick whispered, his eyes wide.

“Yeah,” James replied, his voice tinged with disbelief. “She’s not normal.”

The first guard, now trembling with a mix of fear and determination, drew his stun baton. The electric hum of the baton sliced through the air as he approached her aggressively. “This is your last warning!” he shouted.

She was a specter of speed and agility. As the baton came down, she vanished, leaving the guard swinging at empty space. The crowd gasped, their eyes darting to locate her. She reappeared next to him with ghostly silence, her movements almost too fast to follow. A sharp jab to his face was all it took; his body crumpled to the ground, unconscious beside his companion.

The field fell eerily silent. The display of her prowess left everyone in a mix of awe and fear. James, who had been watching with a blend of fascination and apprehension, found himself rooted to the spot.

“Who the hell is she?” Alex whispered, his voice shaky.

“I don’t know,” James said, his mind racing. “But I have a bad feeling about this.”

The woman’s gaze locked onto James, a silent message passing between them before she even spoke.

“Hello, James,” she said calmly, her voice carrying across the field. “We need you to come with us.”

James’s heart pounded in his chest. “What do you want with me?” he demanded, trying to keep his voice steady.

“Questions later,” she replied. “You need to come with us. Now.”

Before James could react, a sudden darkness enveloped him as a blunt force met the back of his head. The last thing he heard was the distant, panicked shouts of his teammates as he spiraled into unconsciousness.

When James regained consciousness, he found himself in a dimly lit room, his hands bound. The woman who had taken him stood before him, her expression unreadable.

“Where am I?” James croaked, his voice hoarse.

“Somewhere safe,” she replied. “For now. But you need to understand, James, your life is about to change. Drastically.”

James struggled against his bindings. “What do you mean?”

She leaned in closer, her eyes boring into his. “You’re special, James. And there are things in this world you need to know. Things that can’t wait any longer.”

His mind raced with questions, fear, and a burgeoning sense of destiny. Whatever lay ahead, he knew his ordinary life was well and truly over.James looked up as the door to the dimly lit room creaked open. To his surprise, Lilly and Mick walked in, their faces familiar yet strangely out of place in this unfamiliar setting. His confusion deepened as they approached him.

“Lilly? Mick? What the hell is going on?” James demanded, his voice a mix of relief and bewilderment.

“Hey, James,” Lilly greeted him with a soft smile. Mick nodded in acknowledgment.

Lexi, the woman who had brought him here, greeted them both. “Glad you could make it,” she said. “We have a lot to discuss.”

James’s eyes darted between his friends and Lexi. “Wait, you know this crazy lady?” he asked, incredulous.

Lexi crossed her arms, a hint of annoyance in her expression. “I’m not crazy, and you don’t need to be so mean,” she replied, her tone sharp.

Lilly walked over to James, her face softening as she looked into his eyes. “Welcome to Messorem, James.”

“What are you talking about?” James asked, his confusion growing. “Messorem? What is this place?”

Mick stepped forward and began untying James. “It’s a lot to take in, but we’ll explain everything.”

James rubbed his wrists, the red marks from the bindings stark against his skin. “You didn’t have to be so rough,” Lilly told Lexi, her voice edged with disapproval.

Lexi laughed, a light, almost musical sound. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt your precious boyfriend.”

Mick chuckled slightly, adding, “Yeah, you might have gone a bit overboard there, Lexi.”

Lilly shot them both a death stare. “Not funny. Can someone please explain what’s going on?”

Lexi gestured for James to follow her. “Come on, we’ll explain everything. Just follow us.”

James got to his feet, still feeling the lingering dizziness from his earlier encounter. He followed Lilly, Mick, and Lexi out of the room into a long, brightly lit hallway. The stark contrast from the dim room made him squint.

“So, where exactly are we?” James asked, trying to piece together the fragments of information.

“This is Messorem,” Lilly explained. “It’s a secret organization. We work to prevent another Great War.”

“The Great War?” James repeated, memories of history class flooding back. “The one that ended three hundred years ago?”

“Exactly,” Mick confirmed. “The war between the MindLinks, like you, and the EverLinks, like Lilly.”

James’s brow furrowed. “MindLinks and EverLinks… The MindLinks had no magic but were technologically advanced. And the EverLinks were magic users and mythical beings.”

Lilly nodded. “Correct. We’re here to stop those who want to reignite that war.”

James blinked in surprise. “Wait, you’re saying you’re part of the EverLinks?”

Lilly smiled, a playful glint in her eyes. “You might think you’ve never met an EverLink, but in fact, you’ve been best friends with one.” She opened her mouth slightly, revealing a pair of sharp fangs.

James took a step back, his eyes wide. “You’re… a vampire?”

Lilly’s smile widened. “Surprised?”

“To say the least,” James replied, his mind racing. “How did I not know?”

“We’re good at hiding,” Lilly said, her tone light. “Plus, I didn’t think it was necessary for you to know—until now.”

“Why now?” James asked, still trying to wrap his head around everything.

“Because,” Lexi interjected, “the threats we’re facing now are different. More dangerous. We need all the help we can get, and you, James, have skills and potential that can be invaluable to our cause.”

“What skills?” James asked, skeptical. “I’m just a regular guy.”

Mick shook his head. “No, James, you’re not. You’re a MindLink with untapped potential. Your technological expertise and strategic thinking are exactly what we need.”

“Okay, but how do you two fit into all of this?” James asked, looking between his friends.

“We’ve been part of Messorem for a while now,” Lilly explained. “And there’s a specific reason you’re here.”

James’s confusion deepened. “What reason?”

“Frangotta has chosen you to be the new recruit to take over Alpha Squad,” Lexi said, her tone serious.

“Frangotta?” James repeated. “The leader of Messorem?”

“Yes,” Mick confirmed. “You’ve been chosen because of your unique abilities and potential. You’re meant to lead Alpha Squad.”

James’s mind reeled. “Lead? I’m not a leader. I don’t even know what Alpha Squad does.”

“You will,” Lilly assured him. “You have what it takes, James. We believe in you.”

James nodded slowly, still processing everything. “So, what happens now?”“So, what happens now?” James asked, still trying to wrap his head around everything.

“Now you meet Frangotta,” Lexi said. “It’s time to meet who you are to be bonded with.”

“Bonded? Do you mean partnered?” James asked, his confusion deepening.

“It’s more like a marriage,” Lexi explained. “But it goes even deeper than that.”

James frowned, not fond of this idea at all. “I don’t know about this. I didn’t sign up for some forced marriage or whatever this is supposed to be. I mean, shouldn’t I have a choice in the matter?”

Mick shook his head. “There’s no use in trying to fight this, James. There are some things not worth dying for.”

“Dying for?” James’s voice rose. “Do you mean I’ll be killed if I refuse?”

“Pretty much,” Mick said, his expression serious. “The chosen do not get to choose.”

James felt his legs give way as he sank to the floor, his mind racing with fear and confusion. “What the hell have I gotten into?”

Lilly stepped forward, her expression softening with concern. She knelt beside him, and before James could react, she sank her teeth into his neck. His eyes widened, and he tightly gripped her arms as a wave of calm washed over him.

Lilly released him from her clutches, wiping her mouth delicately. “What the hell was that for?” James asked, scared and bewildered.

“Well, I’ve always wondered what you tasted like,” Lilly said with a sly smile. “And I must say, it’s very good. But more importantly, a vampire’s saliva has a calming agent in it, and you seemed like you needed it.”

“Thanks, I guess,” James muttered, still feeling a bit dazed.

Mick helped James to his feet. “Come on, we need to keep moving.”

They continued walking down the hallway until they reached a large, ornate door. Lexi stopped and turned to James. “Well, James, this is where we leave you. You must meet Frangotta by yourself.”

James took a deep breath, feeling a mix of dread and determination. He took a big gulp and pushed on the doors, stepping inside to face whatever awaited him.
