2.2 - The Heart

"And this is… the chemistry lab! This one isn't that dangerous normally, as the most dangerous chemicals are locked and you need permission either from a teacher or a few students that have shown to be responsible. There are still, however, ways to hurt yourself or damage the equipment with the less dangerous compounds. You will learn lab etiquette in the first chemistry class, but if you miss that you must ask someone, as that's a requirement for attending chemistry classes."

With his hand outstretched, Markus swung the door open, showing the kids the almost empty room. The desks looked similar to the ones they had in their temporary classroom if a little bit bigger and more solid. They were all empty, except for a dozen or so in the back, full of different types of glass tubes and vials.

"Usually whenever someone uses the lab outside of class, they clean after themselves. I'll have to see who used it last and… huh?"

As he looked in the back, Mark noticed a blurry shape hidden behind the tubing, pouring a liquid into one of the vials before turning the valve on. A few seconds pass, and the different fluids in the system start to bubble before the valve turns back off without anyone touching it.

"Huh?" The silhouette said, before standing up, revealing a girl with curly blonde hair and very bright blue eyes. She looked around the room until spotting them. "Oh, Mr. Mark… I see you have two new kids with you! Are they the awakened? Are you showing them the school? Good luck! See you-"

"October, did you check that the output container was air-tight?"

"Yeeeee- no, I didn't. It was unsealed wasn't it?" The girl, October, planted her face in her palms

"Yes. And knowing you, you were either about to blow up half of the class or poison the entire school." Mark turned to Sebastian and Tom. "See kids, this is why the rules we have in place are so important, the consequences for not following them can be very dire. Even October knows this, which is why she won't complain when I tell her she's banned for two weeks…"

"Wh-" The girl tried to complain before Mark finished his sentence.

"At least."

"I'm going to clean the room, bye!"

"I'm going to announce Mr. Web later today, good luck! Come on kids, let's keep going." Mark closed the door as he pointed forward, signaling for the kids to walk in front. At least this way he won't leave them behind.

"Mr. Markus, I have a question, about the girl." Sebastian said.

"Oh, October? Yes, she does this fairly often, the girl gets lost in her own thought very easily, especially when performing an experiment."

"No, I was just wondering, it's October a month."

"...Yes. Yes, it is. But it can be used as a name, same with other months, or words. Such as… June. The origin and use of words is a very complex field."

"...oh, ok then." Sebastian conceded, as 'this is someone else's problem' was the perfect dismissal.

"Let's see, what's next… the other workshops are similar to the painting one… Well, we're going outside next, time to show you the school gym, this will be fun."

They walked through the snaking hallway for a long time, they were sure the place was just as big, if not bigger than the outside park. Finally, they reached one of the doors leading to the outside, on what was probably the other side of the school. They opened the door to be blinded by the bright light from outside, as it had brightened by this time. As their eyes adapted, they could see a giant flat space, empty of anything except for grass and some equipment laying on the side. On the other end of the field was a smaller building, at least relatively speaking, in the shape of a box.

If the school was almost entirely empty, almost as if abandoned, the field was teeming with people. Ten, to be exact.

"The building you see there is the indoor gym, to be used when the field isn't available, such as when it's too cold outside or raining."
