Chapter 1.1: Escape from the beast (1)

I was around a hundred and eighty years old when I started my first solo experiment in the private library of our house.

I won’t bore you with the details but I was constructing a magic circle to summon a lower Feywolf. My plan was to trap this summon and absorb its magical power through necromancy to increase my innate amount of mana.

Good plan and it worked, sort of. I summoned a Feywolf and I did manage to gain positive results from it in the end.

But not without consequence.

Standing close to the summoning circle I felt my magic draining and arcane power flowing towards the circle at a groundbreaking speed. Turns out I made a mistake when drawing the dwarf runes into my circle (I found out later when travelling with dwarves that you are supposed to write their magic runes hollow, who knew?).

What stood before me in my circle was a ferocious looking wolf almost touching the ceiling of the library. Fangs as thick as my arm and a feral aura that could make any brave man feel like they were hit by a greater fear spell.

Stolen novel; please report.

Of course me as a youth, with my already immeasurable amount of wisdom, had the bright idea to take as much distance as I could the minute I looked into its glowing eyes. With the serenity of a sage I sprinted about 12 or 13 steps (opposite direction) before the next thing occurred.

You see… summoning the beast (although an accidental feat not easily replicated) did not do much for the amount of ambient mana that was continuously sucked into the circle itself.

A small note for the reader in case he/she knows little of magic: Any mage/wizard with a beginner guide on summoning could tell you that a circle or ritual can only have a certain capacity of mana.

Second interesting thing to note: The mana will continue to gather into the circle until the creature is fully summoned. Usually the amount gathered is exactly enough with possibly a small excess due to variables.

Have you guessed the situation already reader? If you guessed that there was an overcharge of volatile mana due to an incomplete summoning, you’d be right.

But what happened then?

Well, I gracefully blew up
