CHAPTER 476
Perhaps Madeline's desire to earn more money was too strong, for her prayers were soon answered. After she was done shopping and having a meal, she received a call from Sam when she was heading home with the kids.
Sam said that his friend wanted her firm to help look for someone.
Since his friend had made such a request, it was considered her firm's business, and they would have to charge a fee. Therefore, she became energetic in an instant. "Can you tell me more about the person, Sam? Or should I give your friend a call directly?"
After giving it some thought, Sam replied, "I guess I'll tell you more about that person. Don't ask my friend about it when you see him, though. Perhaps he'll be too embarrassed to talk about it."
"Got it," Madeline said.
Other than the cases the main family couldn't solve, the ones they took on were usually secrets that couldn't be exposed to the public. She understood what Sam meant.
Sam went on to say, "My friend's name is Jericho Clarke, and the person he wants you to look for is Peachlyn Lewis."
"Jericho?" Madeline was slightly surprised. "I've met him before, Sam."
The Clarkes were one of the wealthiest families in Worrick. When Madeline still lived in the Taylor Residence back then, she never went anywhere else other than her company. She didn't have many friends, but she had seen Jericho in the Taylor Residence before.
"Oh, yes. You've seen him before." Sam fell into a dazed state all of a sudden.
Although it had only been a short time since she left the Taylor Residence, he had forgotten that she grew up in his family and got to know many of his friends.
Perhaps they felt guilty, and at the mention of Madeline, they would think of Phoebe and her daughter. Therefore, Madeline's name had become taboo in his family, and no one was willing to bring it up.
As he listened to Madeline talk about the incidents in the past, he couldn't help but walk down memory lane.
Noticing that he had remained silent for a while, Madeline called out to him, saying, "Sam?"
"Well…" Sam snapped back to reality. "Peachlyn is the Clarke Family's adopted daughter. The Clarkes wanted to strike up a relationship with the Soulsbys, and the eldest son from the Soulsby Family was rather fond of Peachlyn. Therefore, they got engaged. However, the eldest son from the Soulsby Family was involved in a road accident two months ago and is now bedridden. The Soulsbys want Peachlyn to marry their eldest son as soon as possible, hoping it would help him get better. Unexpectedly, Peachlyn ran away."
Madeline frowned. "Although what Peachlyn has done is unrighteous and selfish, it's hard for her to marry a bedridden man since she's a young woman. Do the Clarkes want me to look for Peachlyn so that they can force her to marry the eldest son from the Soulsby Family?"
If that were true, she wouldn't want to take on this case regardless of how much money the other party
would pay her.
Peachlyn had dumped her fiancé just because he was involved in a road accident. There was no denying that she was selfish, but that was her choice, and she had the freedom to do so. No one had any right to bring her back against her will.
Madeline could criticize Peachlyn or even despise her, but she wouldn't want to capture her and force her to do things the latter didn't want to do.
Both of them wouldn't be happy in such a marriage.
Sam explained, "No. After Peachlyn ran away, the Clarkes announced they would sever ties with her. The Soulsbys felt humiliated because Peachlyn despised their son, so they called off the wedding between the two." Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
After hearing that, Madeline asked, "In that case, why does Jericho still want to look for her?"
"That's because Peachlyn had taken the jade emblem of the Clarke Family away," Sam replied. "Every junior in the Clarke Family has a jade emblem specifically made for them, and it represents their status in the family. Since Peachlyn is no longer part of the Clarke Family, she should return the jade emblem to them. Besides that, she also brought the betrothal gift from the Soulsbys with her. Since the wedding has been called off, the betrothal gift has to be returned to the Soulsbys. Otherwise, that will be against the norm, and the Clarkes will be laughingstocks."
Both the Clarkes and the Soulsbys had become laughingstocks now.
If Peachlyn didn't want to marry her fiancé, she could've talked to the Soulsbys in private and come up
with a good reason to call off the wedding. However, she didn't do it. Instead, she had run away with a man.
The man was her schoolmate, and he was also from a well-to-do family. They had run away together.
Even though the Clarkes and the Soulsbys tried to cover it up, the word still got out in the end. Prestigious families like the Clarkes and the Soulsbys certainly had their fair share of enemies.
The daughter of the Clarke Family, who was supposed to be the Soulsby Family's future daughter-in- law, had eloped with another man. Needless to say, the enemies of these families spread the scandal around and humiliated them.
The patriarch of the Soulsby Family was so furious that he went to the Clarke Residence and kicked up a storm. Knowing they were in the wrong, the Clarkes could only appease him.
After he was gone, the patriarch of the Clarke Family fell ill after getting infuriated.
It wasn't until a month later that the patriarch recovered from his illness. Still feeling vexed over this matter, he ordered Jericho to find Peachlyn and bring back the jade emblem that represented a member of the Clarke Family's identity.
They also had to get back the betrothal gift and return it to the Soulsbys.
Madeline took on the case without hesitation upon hearing the story. "Alright, we'll accept this case. Do you know where they've been? For example, has anyone seen them appear somewhere recently?"
"Yes," Sam replied. "According to Jeric, someone told him they were seen in Wendel City recently.
That's why he instantly thought of your firm."
Madeline sighed in secret, thinking that a business like hers would do well in Worrick.
Her master had been running his business in Worrick for years, and he had earned a name for himself. Whenever anyone needed help, they would instantly think of her master's firm. If her firm would be as famous in Dusktown as that of her master's firm in Worrick one day, she wouldn't have to worry about not having clients anymore.
"Alright, it'll be easier to find them since they've been spotted in this city," Madeline said. "Don't worry, Sam. It's a piece of cake. As long as they're still in Wendel City, I'll find them soon."
"Sure, I have confidence in you," Sam replied. "With that said, there's no rush as your wedding is more important. Don't let this case hold you up."
"Don't worry. It won't hold me up," Madeline reassured with a smile. "Those people from my firm have come to Wendel City to attend my wedding. They can't sit still, so I'll tell them to look for Peachlyn and regard it as taking a stroll and doing some exercise."
Initially, they were all in Dusktown, but they had tagged along when she returned to Wendel City. When Sebastian came over, these people would keep her company and return to Dusktown with her.
Although it was troublesome, they were willing to do it so that she would have more friends with her at the wedding. In other words, her colleagues were all in Wendel City now.
Those people could never sit idly by. Instead of staying in the Wendel Residence with her, they had gone out to explore the city.
That wasn't a problem. With just a call, they would be ready for work.
