Jake nodded in appreciation at his new Stats, both his health and stamina having been heavily boosted by the armour and accessories, even his mana having increased. Adding in their Abilities, he felt far stronger than he had before. Curious, he checked the last piece of equipment he had, one that he had actually gotten quite early on in the Quest chain.

Warrior’s Amulet of the Wilds

An amulet made of stone and enchanted with powerful natural magics.

Accessory.

Effects:

+2 Power

+1 Agility

+1 Vitality

Ability: [Empower]

Soulbound

Quality: Epic

It was arguably better than most of his other accessories, giving more stat points, but what had his attention was its Ability.

Empower:

Increase Base Stats by 50% for one (1) minute. Reduces Base Stats by 90% for ten (10) minutes after use.

It was strong, but obviously a trump card, only to be used when Jake was sure he was going to be able to wait out the ten-minute long debuff. He almost kicked himself for not reading it sooner, wondering if he would have been able to defeat the Shadow Wolf Alpha faster if he’d used it. Maybe he wouldn’t have been infected by the Corruption if he had, but he also would have missed out on getting [Shadow Magic] and one of his Titles, as well as a Fate point.

Shaking his head, Jake just went through his ever-growing list of Titles instead of thinking about it.

Unique Title

Unlocks unique interactions with other Champions and certain creatures.

While he didn’t fully understand the effects of each Title, Jake knew that they were probably beneficial in some way or another. The ones that caught his attention the most were the last two. Jake had no idea what ‘mind altering effects’ meant, but he was glad he had extra resistance against them now. The most mysterious was the effect of the last Title though. It hinted at other gods or Primals also having Champions, though Jake wasn’t sure what kinds of ‘unique interactions’ he could have with them, nor what to expect from the ‘certain creatures’ part, either.

Checking the menu again, Jake saw that he could set a Title as ‘Active’, which would allow others to see when they used a Skill like [Observe] on him. Shrugging, Jake assigned his first Title as an experiment, seeing it be highlighted as he did so. Looking down at his body, he didn’t feel any different, so he just assumed it had worked.

Luna gave a soft whine beside him, Jake looking into the tent as the soon to be mother huffed and puffed inside. The two of them had taken a slow walk back to Jake’s camp after Gaia had finished explaining some of the finer points of magic to Jake, before simply vanishing with a quick goodbye. Now it was late morning, and Jake sighed as he checked the last of Gaia’s ‘gifts’, a new Quest that had appeared just as the goddess had left.

Quest: Lay of the Land

Gaia, Primal of the Wilds, has tasked you with fully exploring the Dark Woods.

Objectives:

Progress: 29%

Rewards:

Magic Map

Jake sighed as he read over it, not knowing exactly what a ‘Magic Map’ was, but once again assuming it would be beneficial. He was actually somewhat surprised that he had already covered as much ground as he had, but it was still far from done. Looking back at Luna, Jake stood and stretched, walking to the edge of the clearing, and stepping through the Safe Zone’s barrier. Once back in the woods proper, he began to run.

------

Gaia watched as her newly minted Champion began to jog through the Dark Woods, quickly picking up speed as he dodged between trees and over roots, spirally out slowly from the Safe Zone in the centre. She observed him for a while longer, smiling at the determined expression on his face, before turning away and looking elsewhere.

She traversed the continent in but a blink of an eye, coming to another wood at the base of a mountain, peering in and finding her target. A simple flex of her will, and the wolves all looked up, several rising from their home and running into the woods. It would take a while for the new wolves to reach the Dark Woods, but she helped them along, blessing their journey as only she could do.

Looking up, she stared at the late morning sky, letting out a sigh of satisfaction as she allowed herself to be immersed in the wonder of the world. Of her world. A flash of power beside her made her frown, turning to look at the other Primal as he hovered in the air beside her, both invisible to any that may try to pry.

“Gaia,” Sol, Primal of the Sun said flatly, “You have chosen a Champion?”

“Yes,” she replied curtly, “And what of it?”

“You have opened the flood gates, so to speak,” the other Primal shook his head, “You know what your actions shall reap. Especially for choosing a Traveller.”

“Of course,” Gaia laughed, the sound like the chime of birdsong and rustling of leaves, “The other, lesser, gods shall begin to choose their own Champions soon enough.”

“And you have no regrets of this?” the man asked, Gaia shaking her head, “Very well. Then I shall choose my own from the Travellers as well.”

“Of course,” Gaia nodded, “Now, do us both a favour and return to your realm, I don’t enjoy your ever-present heat.”

“Very well, Mother of All,” the man snorted, before vanishing into nothing, Gaia just shaking her head as she tried to return to her joy, finding it somewhat lacking now.

“Ass,” she muttered, “Always seems to be able to show up just in time to ruin a perfectly good moment.”

Shaking her head, Gaia flitted through the Wilds once again, making sure that everything was still in order and chaotic as it should be. After all, it wouldn’t be too long before the Travellers started to venture into her domain, and she had to make sure it would be ready and waiting for them.

------

Jake blinked as the notification symbol appeared in his vision, sighing as he pulled it up. He had been running for hours now, night having fallen and barely slowed him down. His [Sprint] Skill had levelled up multiple times, now sitting at level nine, almost ready to be Ascended. Shaking his head, Jake glanced at the screen, almost tripping as he read it.

One (1) Hour until your pet gives birth.

“Shit,” he grunted as he turned back towards his camp and the Safe Zone, bolting between the trees as fast as he could, “I completely forgot about Luna!”

He raced forwards, pushing himself as hard as he could, finally bursting out into the clearing with barely ten minutes to spare. Jake shook himself off, ignoring the feeling of sweat beneath his armour as he rushed to Luna’s side, the wolf panting heavily as she twitched, looking up at him in pain. The glance made Jake flinch, quickly moving to kneel behind her as she yipped loudly.

“I’m sorry, girl,” Jake panted back, still slightly out of breath from his mad dash back, “I’m here now, so let’s do this. You’ll be a proud mom in only a little while.”

Jake blinked as the screen appeared in front of him, reading it over quickly.

Your pet is giving birth!

Y/N?

“Yes,” he said, the screen vanishing as Luna whimpered, lifting her tail as a sizable orb was pushed out of her.

Jake grabbed the sac before it could hit the ground, popping it with his thumb nail and ignoring the fluid that spilled out onto his sleeping roll and knees. He quickly freed the pup from the confines of its amniotic sac, placing it down beside Luna as he tossed the fleshy membrane to her, the wolf quickly gobbling it up. The next orb came soon after, Jake repeating the process as he slowly soaked his gloves and pants in fluids, the pups gathering beside their mother as she alternated pushing, eating the membranes and trying to clean them off with her tongue. Finally, the seventh, and last sac emerged, Luna groaning and panting as she barely had the strength to lift her head, Jake just nodding to her as he popped the last sac, placing the final pup beside its mother.

A moment later, a new screen appeared in his vision.

Successful Birth!

Jake smiled as he fell back, still ignoring the fluids that were soaking into his bedroll and armour, surprisingly exhausted as he watched the new mother continue to clean her pups. It didn’t take long for all of them to wiggle to her stomach, quickly starting to suckle as Luna lay her head down with a sigh. Jake just continued to smile as he watched, checking her Status Page to be sure that she was fine.

Mother of the Pack

Jake nodded as he saw that she didn’t seem to have anything wrong with her, though he wasn’t actually too sure how to check. He did notice that her old Title of “Mother-to-be” had vanished, replaced by a new one. Curious, he opened and read it.

Mother of the Pack

The greatest joy can be Motherhood.

Mother to the current pack.

“Great,” Jake smiled, stroking the now tired wolf’s back, “I’m sure you’ll make an excellent mother, Luna.”

Name Shadow Wolf Puppies?

Y/N?

Jake blinked as the new screen appeared, before quickly accepting the prompt, a screen identical to the one he had use dot name Luna appearing.

“Okay, girl,” he said as Luna looked up at him, “What are we naming them?”

Luna just huffed, laying her head back down as Jake chuckled, looking over the pups once again. Each was quite large, their bodies squirming beside each other as they drank. Shaking his head, Jake sighed, thinking over the naming patterns they used back at the Bio-Dome. A pang of longing flashed through him, surprising Jake as he looked back down at the pups, shaking it off as he pointed to the first, and largest, to have been born.

“You’ll be Alpha,” he said, watching as the prompt vanished, only to be replaced by an identical one, asking for the next name, “Beta.”

The pups were quickly named, with the three girls being called Beta, Gamma, and Zeta, while the boys were Alpha, Delta, Epsilon and the smallest, Eta. Jake watched the pups as they finally seemed to be satisfied with their meal, curling up close to their mother as they promptly fell asleep.

“Well,” Jake said as he shuffled back out of the tent, looking up at the dark night sky, “Guess it’s back to running for me.”
