After 2 hours of wave warp, or what seemed like an eternity to Nian, the vessel had dropped out of wave warp and approached an enormous semi circled disc that covered up a fair portion of space. This was in fact the station and area where Nian and Aun would begin their training as warden recruits.
Aun glanced at Nian and was laughing heavily.
“hahhahahahaha! this was the best trip I’ve ever had...I never knew it was possible to puke that much... Sorry about that…”
Nian, gasping for breath, fixed Aun with a piercing glare.
“You...bastard...I'll get you for this….my stomach is inside out...urgh..”.
These words only made Aun laugh harder, but it didn't last long as the vessel soon docked causing it to shake slightly. Of course, the puke had already been cleaned via the internal systems of the vessel which were designed for it.
Aun and Nian took their time getting off as they followed the others, some of which didn't fare any better than Nian. Nian glanced at the female who had screeched as he puked in front of her and watched her rush off as though afraid he was going to turn into a fountain again.
“Thanks Aun...I'm sure this is going to end nicely!”
Aun shrugged and gave Nian a pat on the back.
“Don't feel bad. It's normal from what I hear “
Aun smiled for a moment but as soon as they came out of the vessel their eyes widened in amazement.
Inside the docking back were an incredible amount of mancers, as well as vessels going back and forth. Wardens and recruits could be seen, some looked to be their age and some as old as their fathers.
“This is going to be awesome…” Aun said as he clenched his fists and looked around.
Nian also felt oddly happy here. He looked around to see that everyone had a proud or hard working attitude. He felt that this is truly where he belonged. A place where everyone had a chance to grow and become stronger, regardless if they were from a clan or not.
“People who have exited vessel-1345G please follow me and line up” A stern sounding voice called out.
Nian glanced over seeing a man with a tablet like device, identical to the women whom he had met at the entrance of the vessel before they left.
“That's our vessel Nian, let’s go.”
Both Nian and Aun followed the others and lined up in front of the man.
“Firstly, I want to welcome you all to Helios. This is one of 1000, yes, 1000 warden stations across the border that separates humanity from certain doom. Secondly, I want to tell you all that this isn't a game… You are all here to become wardens, meaning, to try your best and become stronger.”
“1000 stations, can you believe that… There must be so many wardens. I heard from the recruiter before we left that a station can hold at least 20 million people, 30 at most” Aun quietly whispered to Nian.
Nian quickly did the math, and his face paled somewhat.
“Thirty billion...are you kidding me?”
The recruiter seemed to have heard Aun and Nian whispering and quickly called out.
“You two at the back. If you think we have a large amount of wardens, then why are we still outnumbered 3 to 1 when it comes to devourers? And that's only from what we know of, now shut up, I'm speaking!” The man growled.
With the man calling out to both Aun and Nian, it made the surrounding recruits laugh quietly causing the two of them to quietly settle down. Despite the smiles on their faces, the recruiter gave a nod and continued.
“You will receive further explanations from your mentor. When I call your name, come up and receive an information tablet. The device will help guide you around Helios as well as direct you to where you will be living for the next few years, and all the basic crap. So once you get your tablet, head off to where you will be living and change into your uniform.”
The recruiter uttered out without care despite the recruits laughing. He only weirdly shook his head at the bunch of idiots that thought this was funny.
“Okay, firstly” the man began to call out names one by one.
Recruits, when called out, would come forward and be given a tablet. After confirming where to go from there by utilising the tablet’s navigation system, they would then head off.
Soon Aun was called up.
“I'll see you soon Nian.” He said as he gave a clumsy salute and headed off before vanishing past the mechanical doors in the distance following many other new recruits from the surrounding areas.
“Nian Mer...” The man began to speak a name.
Nian was very careful to quickly call out and say that he was here to not alert the remaining recruits of his clan name. The last thing he needed was rumors to spread.
“I'm here!” Nian called out.
He rushed over towards the female who wore a strong uniform similar to the one at star mancer academy but gave off a more proud strong presence.
She nodded and smiled at him.
“This tablet will help guide you around and act as a communication device with you and your mentor. Your uniform will have a section where the tablet can fit in. Please head off to where your room is. You will be sharing it with another student.
Please note that each month a D rank devourer core will be given to the student with the top marks. In addition, every month an E rank devourer core will be given to the second student and an F rank core for the third student. We reward those who work hard, so try your best.”
The girl gave Nian a strong smile before she waited for the next student.
Nian nodded and headed off. His heart beating quickly, a wide smile adorning his face.
Finally my first step to becoming a warden. I'll make a name for myself. I'll grow and prove to everyone that I'm not useless and rub it in their faces. He uttered out fiercely in his mind.
Raising the tablet, he could see a holo map being displayed and mark out his location. It began to direct him to his room by using a glowing light to note the path to be taken. After walking for a good 5 minutes, Nian finally arrived at his room. He felt somewhat nostalgic as he glanced up at the door.
“3232...I’ve never seen such a large room number before…” he said as he stared dumbfounded, before walking closer.
He noticed there wasn't a handle on the door. Instead, a scan pad was located to the right of the door. He blinked before quickly reaching for his tablet and moving it close to the pad. It made a mechanical sound as a light flashed silently and then the door opened for Nian.
The interior of the room was much more than he expected. It was at least 15 meters wide and had a clean look about it. Two decent single beds were placed on each side of the room. At the end of each bed was an assortment of drawers for clothing and the like.
Nian entered and the moment he did the tablet flashed as a mechanical voice spoke out.
“Uniforms will be synthesized after size is input into Warden Tablet.”
Nian glanced and didn't hesitate as he remembered his size from when he had to get a new uniform at star mancer. After taking the time to input everything required, the uniform was synthesised from a surface drawer.
Nian knew the technology was similar and that the tablet would keep track of his body’s growth using the several microchips embedded in the uniform.
After changing, he sat on his bed and looked around.
“I wonder who my roommate is.” As soon as he spoke a voice called out.
“No way! Nian? Haha, what luck, seems like we are destined to be rivals.”
Nian blinked as his throat clogged up from the feeling of puke that the owner of the voice had made him suffer through.
“Shit… Aun, you're my roommate?”
Aun who was standing by the doorway laughed and nodded as he stepped in to show he was wearing his own uniform.
“Yep yep, you got that right. I went off to find the cafeteria. After talking about food for so long on the trip here, I got a bit hungry.” Nian coldly smiled, wondering who could feel hungry after seeing him vomit for so long.
“Well, you find it? “ Nian asked.
“Yep, want to head off and grab a bite?” He said whilst nodding.
Nian smirked and stood up.
“Hell yeah I do… You made me empty my stomach…”
Aun laughed, and soon, both of them began walking down the hall. He took out his tablet and used the navigation function to help guide the way as he hadn’t memorised the way completely.
“So it says we can basically do whatever we want within zone 1-5 as these areas are for the new recruits, but we have to stay within. Anything above is for the seniors and are where mancers are repaired and weaponry is maintained.“ Nian said as he was using his own tablet to look up some basic information.
“I heard tomorrow we will be going to meet our mentor who will test what we are good at” Aun replied with a nod.
Nian blinked and stared at Aun, dumbfounded.
“Wait, what we are good at? In the end, aren't we all going to be mancer pilots?” Nian asked.
Aun chuckled and shook his head.
“Not every warden uses a mancer. There are a lot of wardens that can't even earn the right to use one, and have to stick to manning large spaceships like this. But there are a lot of smart people who prefer to maintain weaponry or work on technology. These people will help us or be sent to the guild to assist in research.”
Nian was stunned at Aun’s knowledge. He looked carefully at him.
“You know quite a lot, is that info from the tablet?” Nian asked.
Aun shook his head.
“I doubt it. I’ve always dreamt of being a warden… So I did my research. But I'm sure the mentor will tell you tomorrow. But today, lets enjoy ourselves and eat till we drop!”
Nian glanced around and saw a fate link. This was the 40th time he had seen one and it confused him.
“So many… What are they trying to do here?”
Aun glanced and carefully examined.
“No idea. Maybe they’re trying to make us spend cores. Maybe one of us will get lucky and strike gold, which they could use to help the warfront?”
“When you put it like that it makes sense.” Nian replied and nodded.
After speaking, Aun and Nian entered the cafeteria that was booming with hundreds of recruits wearing the same uniforms as them. Aun smiled wildly while Nian glanced in shock. He had never seen so many people in one area, especially an eating area, where it was so large.
The two went over and found a seating place in the corner away from all the talk and issues after getting themselves food.
“Are you planning to be a warden with a mancer, or a researcher?” Nian asked curiously.
“Pilot all the way. I'm sure stabbing a devourer feels great, and it's the best way to make a name for myself.” Aun replied.
Nian chuckled softly.
“You have some weird ideas… but I guess you're right. If you’re a researcher, you won’t get famous unless you make a big discovery, right?”
Aun and Nian both conversed before several awed sounds echoed across the cafeteria. The two couldn't help but glance at the entrance seeing a group of 10 students who wore a uniform that was the same as there’s but bared a large emblem on the chest.
This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it
Whispers began to echo around. But the students were too far for Nian to hear. He only glanced seeing that there were four females who looked both attractive and strong as well as 3 boys who looked handsome and emitted a noble presence.
“Probably from a well known clan.” Aun spoke as he stuffed his mouth with food.
Nian turned around quickly as one of the females, the one with a pair of glasses, turned to look at him with a casual cold gaze. Nian returned to eating his meal.
“I almost forgot there are warden clans. heh.” he uttered.
“You would be surprised. I heard there are five great clans in total for all wardens.” Aun said.
Nian blinked.
“Wait, only five? There are so many wardens, why that many?” he asked.
Aun soon laughed.
“Well, there are other clans but the biggest difference is whether or not they have an SSS rank warden. When you compare anything else to that alone, it’s hard to top it…”
Nian’s body shuddered. He felt hungry for more information so he pressed a bit further.
“So, who are these clans? Help me out here!”
Laughing softly at Nian, Aun nodded.
“Well, firstly there’s the Minerva Clan. From what I know their SSS rank warden is a freaking drop dead gorgeous beauty that is matchless!. Her clan renamed themselves to Minerva after her mancer Athena, but I think it's a different sort of naming thing regardless.”
Nian nodded. “Ahh yes. That's it. Minerva is the ancient roman version of Athena. Now it makes sense.” Aun continued.
“The Minerva clan specialize in training a lot of females who end up becoming incredible mancer pilots. They usually only take pilots of A rank or higher as potential husbands. Keeping the blood strong I guess.”
Nian frowned. This was something he knew all too well. Aun continued again. “The second clan is a bit more on the serious side. Clan Augur. They are crazy, in that they worship their SSS rank mancer. They call it Haruspex. I heard it's pretty merciless against devourers.
The third clan is Meiyo Dynasty. Don't let the name fool you. They’re really a clan, but I heard their roots go all the way back to our original world, earth. Something about being descendants of an imperial family or some stuff like that. Anyways, their SSS Mancer is Suzaku.”
Nian smiled as he was enjoying his meal. He glanced over as he saw from the corner of his eye that two females and a boy were walking towards them. The others were dealing with what seemed like recruits trying to get on there good side. Nian saw some offer new trays of food to them as if they were servants.
Nian had seen this all to well before at star mancer academy. It happened once to his step sister and brother. “Yo Nian, you still interested?” Aun spoke and Nian quickly turned to look at him hoping the three people weren't really coming this way. “Sorry, go for it.”
Aun nodded. “The next one is a bit crazy if you ask me. They’re called Asgard. I mean, Clan Asgard doesn't really sound good right? But anyways, I think the meaning of the name has something to do with it. I read up a bit on this and it seems that they’re the strongest of the 5 clans.
I heard they only take wardens who have good battle potential and enjoy fighting devourers and people. There SSS rank mancer is called Yggdrasil. I have a hunch it has something to do with... hmm… oh yeah, the mancer that holds everyone together.
I'm not sure what they mean though, who am I to doubt the strongest mancer right?.. I saw pictures of all five on the net, and he looks the craziest… If I were a devourer less than SSS rank, I’d crap myself if I met him..”
Nian couldn't help but laugh. “Well obviously a warrior clan is going to have a mancer that is geared as hell. Damnit, makes me wish I took more interest in their pictures..” He said.
Aun chuckled and tried to console Nian a bit, but continued on with his explanation.
“I guess that leaves the the Vexelian Clan. These guys are more of an organisation if you ask me. I heard they are the richest of the five clans and monopolize cores S - SS rank despite how insanely rare those devourers can be. There mancer Arklez is pretty crazy strong. They didn't bother hiding his signature move. I think it was... well, basically the name has to do with it.
The warden managed to get a SS Rank Sword called Excalibur or something like that. Basically, I saw short clips from wardens mancers. The thing basically turns into a giant sword of light and cuts anything within its range in half. But it's nothing special. All the SSS rank mancers have SS equipment, so this Excalibur isn't anything special compa-...”
As Aun was about to finish, a voice spoke out. “How dare you speak ill of our Vexelian Clan’s sacred weapon!..” A strong yet feminine voice called out which attracted Nian, Auns, as well as surounding students attention.
Nian glanced at the figure. It was the female with glasses that had shot him a cold look. She was currently crossing her arms under her fairly well developed bust and tapping her right foot on the ground.
The female beside her had her hands behind her back with an innocent yet menacing smile. The male of the trio acted in a way that if he took a breath of air from near them it would poison him.
“Sorry, did you say you're Vexelian Clan’s treasure?” Aun glanced at the emblem on their chest and remembered it was indeed from their clan. His body quivered and he laughed.
“Ah, you guys really are from that clan. What luck I have..” Aun quietly spoke, enough for those 4 to hear.“Shut your mouth, filth….and apologize!!” The female replied with a glare.
Aun remained quiet, he grinned and looked to Nian who was feeling the rush. He looked up at the girl who glanced at Aun, waiting for an apology.
“Well, how can he apologize now that you told him to shut up? Hahaha you're not very forward thinking are y-” Nian said.
However, before he could finish, the boy who was quiet suddenly pulled out a steel dagger. Possibly a family heirloom judging from the decorative symbols on the blade. With a swing, the boy stabbed it into the metal table, managing to get it in a couple of centimeters. He glared at Aun.
“Shut the fuck up, trash… she wasn’t talking to you.” He declared. Nian was frightened and taken aback. The boy grinned seeing Nian scared. However, he felt his collar being pulled and with it, he was pulled over the table. Opening his eyes, he was faced with Aun giving him an evil look.
“You think you’re great scaring my friend like that?” Aun asked. The boy panicked a bit as he wasn’t used to people talking back to him. Noticing his hand was still grasping onto the dagger, he aimed the pointy end towards Aun and tried to stab him.
But this action caused the two females to panic. Everyone knew that if you harmed a warden inside a station it would mean dire consequences, even for a member of the five clans.
Aun grinned before sliding his arm over, clasping onto the boy's wrist in a fluid motion and twisting it. Then, pulling the collar down the boy’s head smacked against the table causing him to scream in pain as he dropped the dagger and clenched his face at the same time.
Within moments, people were shouting, watching with awe, wondering what was happening. Aun stood up and glanced at the two females. The two were stunned but when they came back to their senses, walked away.
“You bastard!!” One of the males came rushing over trying to tackle Aun to the ground from the side.
“Piss off…” Aun sidestepped while at the same time plowing his right knee into the boy’s abdomen making him wince in pain. Aun glanced over at them, grinned, and called out for everyone to hear.
“You think you guys can bully us because we aren't part of the five clans and we aren't as popular as you! Think again!!” Aun declared.
His words had weight behind them. Aun wasn’t from a clan, and the majority of the recruits weren’t either. If anyone of the five dared to act, it would mean that they would be proving him right and they would think every recruit here was trash. Meaning, not only would their reputation be tainted, they would also gain hundreds of new enemies.
The female glared at Aun, knowing the predicament she was in. She then looked at Nian and glared fiercely before she motioned towards the other clan members to help the injured so they could be on their way.
But it was too late. At the same time they tried to walk away, two men wearing staff uniform came by and took two of the clan members for questioning as the other two helped the boy who was injured away. In addition to the two clan members, Aun, and Nian also had to stay behind.
“I'm telling you, they started it… They went ahead and interrupted us while we were talking” Nian spoke with annoyance to one of the uniformed staffer tasked with keeping an eye on the recruits.
“Relax buddy, between you and me, the major clansmen usually always start trouble on the first day. It's become a sort of habit. This time, it just so happened to be the Vexelian.” The staffer replied.
Aun narrowed his eyes, gazing passed the man talking to Nian and eyed the two Vexelian members carefully.
I doubt they plan to let this off so easily, I’ll have to be careful. Aun thought.
After Nian, and Aun finished, the man recommended they head back to their room and wait till they met their mentor tomorrow. Of course, the two boys also thought this was the best action and followed orders. It wasn't long before they were both in their rooms.
Nian was sitting on the side of his bed going through the tablet’s database of information to study more about mancers. He couldn’t help but think that something was amiss.
“Vexelian. I'll remember that clan…” Nian mumbled to himself. Aun who was resting on his bed with his hands behind his head spoke up.
“Don't worry. As long as we stay on guard, I doubt they will do anything. I'm sure after we finish we won't even be stationed in the same regions as them.”
Nian nodded while glancing at the tablet that showed where to meet his mentor.
Tomorrow is when things heat up...I'll be sure to put as much effort as I can and make something of myself. I’ll outshine my entire clan on my own. Nian decided to rest for the night. After searching through his own tablet for information, Aun also decided to call it a day.
Meanwhile, within another section of the facility. The vexelian recruits were standing in front of a man who was seated behind a desk wearing a sharp military outfit. One that gave him a refined look but also made one feel his presence.
“You're saying two recruits managed to make you look so bad in front of the others? Hahahaha” The man began to laugh hysterically before he calmed himself down.
“Lesia, I expected more from you. You already went and started trouble, but karma seemed to hit you instantly.” The man spoke in a lecturing tone.
The female Lesia, who wore the glasses during the small confrontation in the cafeteria, was currently flustered while clenching her fists.
“U..uncle….this is not fair...they stained our reputation...why are they being let off so easy?” She asked.
The man grinned and replied.
“First of all, from what the footage suggests, you started it. Secondly, if word got out that we went ahead and picked on nobodys with clan resources, how would that make our reputation appear? Third, they will be having mentors and no doubt a relationship will be established if we pick on the mentors student.
No doubt we will be bothered by that mentor as well as the ones on their side. Let this go Lesia. And you Calam, you're lucky you're not in a cell after threatening a student with a weapon. There were a lot of witnesses, and it took dabbling from my end to keep things calm. So for now, don't cause me trouble…”
The man glared at Calam, the boy who had threatened Nian. Calam shivered slightly at the man’s hawk like glare and nodded.
“I apologize Sir…”
As they left the man’s office, he turned around on his chair and gazed at his tablet.
He looked carefully at Aun’s and Nians information. Noticing a detail he chuckled.
“Meris huh, seems like one has strayed from the pack to see the real world. I wonder what this will lead to.”
