Chapter 5 - The First True Loss

Chapter 5 - The First True Loss

Jude tried running towards Jack but the uneven ground and the lack of movement he had in one arm made it quite tricky.

Jack was a man in a red and black workout top. He was a couple inches smaller than Jude and had a black crew cut that came down and joined light stubble.

“The hell happened to your arm?” Jack asked.

“Some guy broke it in a fight.”

“Did ya’ at least win?”

“Yeah…” Jude said the most unconvincing lie he had ever said. The other three with Jack all just looked at him judgingly.

“Anyways why are you guys here. You were at the Urban zone.” Jude stated.

“Yeah, we got killed.” Spoke one of the other two guys with Jack. A skinny man with short light brown hair.

“Yeah, Rafe went to scout and when he didn’t come back the rest of us went looking for him. One of the teams are moving as a full group. Next thing we knew we’d respawned here.” Jack explained the whole situation as briefly as he could.

“Come on Jack!” Rafe shouted as he and the other two had begun to move. Jack had turned around, looked at Jude’s arm and patted him on the back.

“I gotta go man. But you stay here and find the rest of the Jungle team.” With that he and the rest of his squad took off.

The size of these arenas were not that big. The perimeter of all six zones put together was approximately a kilometre. It would take the group about five minutes to get back to the Urban environment if there were no major hold ups.

Jude stood there trying to weigh up his options. The Jungle, whilst small, was thick and unsteady. If he were to try and find his team there was no guarantee that he would not just be lost for the next forty-five minutes. He may even meet the other team that had split up their members.

As he thought, he was oblivious to the shadow that hovered over him. He was processing his options to realise that there should not be moving shadows in a simulated Jungle. It was not until he looked up to clear his head did, he see Tired Eyes floating above him.

Suddenly Tired Eyes dropped at an incredible pace. He was hurtling towards Jude, who blinked. When his eyes opened next, he was stood in the exact same position.

The cold metal corridors he’d been stood at before he’d gone in now surrounded him again. His right arm flopped down; gravity dragged it to his side. His cast and break had both gone. There was a dull thud as Jude fell to his knees. Sweat slid down his face and dripped onto the floor below. He took sharp breathes, fear had set in.

He knew at that moment if this was not a test he would definitely would have died. He did not take care in assessing his surroundings and it could have cost him his life.

Whilst Jude was wallowing, there was a battle going down in the Jungle.

Nerissa swiftly dodged the attack from Red Jumper. His Wind-Up Punch barely missing her, the air from the attack brushed against her face.

As she went to twist into her counterattack, she had gone for the same kick as last time, a hand grasped her ankle. It was another member of the Blue Team, probably one of the ones that she’d run away from before.

Though they had stopped her momentum there was a new opportunity provided to her.

Keeping her foot stuck in the man’s grasp she used it flick her other foot into Red Jumper’s face. There was a loud crash as he slammed into the moist mud below.

The instant Red Jumper smashed into the mud Nerissa was pulled by the foot towards her captor.

An elbow buried itself into her gut. She spat all the air in her lungs out as the pain exploded out through her body.

She felt her hair dampen with the mud that stained the silver. Her body followed her head as it went limp on the ground.

Opening her eyes, she saw her captor and another enemy bound by vines. As she heard the splattering of footsteps behind.

“Hey you bitch! We told you not to run off.” Two girls came to pick Nerissa up, the other two members of the Jungle team.
