Goodnight

You stand above the lifeless bodies of the gods. Their smug faces now forever frozen in horror. As you remember the countless times you knelt before them and earnestly prayed for help which never came you hear a faint ticking. As you remember your family and the slavers that took them so long ago you feel the ticking get louder. It seems that something knows the gods are dead and is coming to collect. The ticking is deafening now and you can also hear the faint sound of bells. You used to love bells, they heralded the arrival of the caravans which filled your small desert town with excitement and wares for the days to come. Now you only feel dread and a faint sense of curiosity. The bells are getting louder and you wonder what claims Death when it dies. As the ringing turns deafening and you bask in your revenge one last time everything shifts. You are once again safe in your soft bed, the desert outside may be cold but you have a comfy blanket, the same blanket your mother gave you on your birthday. Your family is just down the hall and you are safe. You turn to the source of the ringing. The small alarm clock was apparently set for the middle of the night, this is most likely your brother's idea of a joke. You turn it off and drift into more comfortable and joyful dreams.
