Chapter 2: The Dreaded Tutorial Part 1

Chapter 2: The Dreaded Tutorial Part 1

Harry was a small black-haired boy with eyes the color of purest emeralds. He was currently sitting with his arms wrapped around his legs in the darkness of the cupboard under the stairs. Why was he sitting in a cupboard, you ask? Well, unfortunately for young Harry this was not unusual. This was something that was rather commonplace for him as this was his bedroom. Yes, quite appalling is it not. He was quite frequently stuck in this tiny cupboard even though his aunt and uncle had plenty of space.

They were not very nice people although if you asked them, they would of course inform you that there was no finer family than them, The Dursley’s. Of course, they did not include Harry in this. As Harry was a very unique young boy. He often made extraordinary things happen around him. The Dursley’s, however, did not appreciate this feature of the child. Harry was the only son of Petunia Dursley’s sister Lily who had died when Harry was only 15 months old. Petunia was a bitter, hateful, jealous women who many would comment resembled a horse. Harry would probably feel bad to make said comparison as that was an insult to the poor horse. Afterall horses are gorgeous creatures. We apologize to horses everywhere.

As for the rest of the family, well they quite deserve each other. Petunia married a prejudiced and angry man by the name of Vernon Dursley, and he was very large man who heavily resemble a walrus. Again, my apologies to the animal in question. Vernon worked as a Director at Grunnings, a drill company. He spent his day verbally abusing the people he worked with, and this was, apparently, good business practices, but I digress. Petunia was a stay-at-home mom who spent her free time watching daytime drama, celebrity scandals, or spying on the neighbors. She had plenty of free time owing to the fact that she made her nephew Harry do all the housework while she took the credit for his efforts to those same neighbors. Such a sense of entitlement and superiority.

Lastly, we have Dudley Dursley. Now in our resolution to stay away from insulting poor innocent creatures. I will just this is a young man who very much takes after his parents. Especially his father looks wise. He started out as a round pink beach ball and just continues to increase in size with each passing year as his mother and father spoil the boy abominably. Now you’re wondering, ‘How will things ever improve for our adorable black-haired green eyed little bean?’ Well, I don’t know why you're asking me I’m not a Seer. I don’t know any more than you do. Oh, but wait, there appears to be something happening with little Harry. Ah, I see now, the clock has struck midnight. “Happy Birthday Harry, it’s not every day a young man turns six, is it?”

XxxxxxMGVHPGxxxxxxMGVHPGxxxxxxMGVHPGxxxxxxMGVHPGxxxxxx

Harry heard the wall clock quietly chime. It was midnight. He was officially 6 years old. “Happy Birthday Harry,” Harry whispered to himself. Just as he was getting ready to stretch out and go to sleep something appeared in front of his eyes. This was concerning because the cupboard was very dark. It was so dark in fact that he could not see his hand in front of his face. Not to mention his eyesight was not very good either, due to all the time spent in a dark cupboard and getting hit over the head. Harry struggled to put the glasses his aunt had gotten out of a bargain bin on his face in the darkness. As soon as they were in place he saw a blurry light purple box in front of his face that said the following.

[Welcome to Magic’s Game.]

Harry tried poking the box, but his finger just went right through it. He thought to himself, ‘Is this real?’ That appeared to be sufficient acknowledgement as a new box popped up.

[Congratulations! You have been chosen by Magic to be her Champion. You will need to work with others to change the magical world. This will not be easy. Explore and learn about your new abilities and the options it provides. Make trusted allies and friends. Be careful who you trust and share this power with. You have 4 Player Interfaces that you may gift to others. After that you will have to use special points to purchase them. Once this message disappears the tutorial will commence. This will walk you through the basics of the Player Interface, Instances, and combat. The tutorial is an Instance that functions outside of time; it cannot be stopped, cannot be interfered with, and will return you to the same time and place that it was instigated from. As soon as you select yes, the tutorial will commence. Begin Tutorial?]

[Yes] / [No]

Not knowing what else to do Harry moved his hand and clicked the yes button. At once the box went away and a shimmering film expanded around him getting into all the nooks and crannies.

[Current space is small. Beginner level instance covers the space of a small bedroom. Would you like to enlarge this space? It will not affect the outside world and will revert when the instance ends.]

[Yes] / [No]

Harry once again pressed yes. Then watched in wonder as his cupboard enlarged to a full room the size of Dudley’s second bedroom.

[A word of caution. As it may look odd for you to be in public seeming to poke at empty air, merely focusing on what you want in your head will be sufficient. Also, while in your screen you may get a vacant and/or glazed expression. It is ill advised to open your screens while others may be paying attention to you. So, pay attention in school. School is important.]

Harry blushed and giggled at the box. He had to admit it was right. Many people already found him odd he did not need to add to it.

[Now normally you start on the status page. However, we are going to start on the quest page.

‘Ah, I wonder if that’s to make sure that I don’t miss certain things. Is it trying to help by giving quests that I can’t refuse,’ Harry pondered this as he continued.

[Objective Complete! Proceed to the Quest screen.]

He did as he was told and the box disappeared and a full screen appeared before him with 2 tabs Jobs and Quests. Jobs was currently empty so he went to Quests and his current quest popped up. An arrow pointing the quest was blinking so he clicked on it. The quest expanded out to the right and showed everything he just read except it now had 2 objectives complete.

He noticed symbols on the bottom left corner. A set of footsteps, a thumbtack, and a question mark. Focused on each as an arrow appeared pointing down at them. The footsteps are a way to track a course to your current objective, but is not foolproof as you must have an idea where you need to go for this to work. If you are searching for something it may provide a search area. Example: you need to go to the local grocery store and have never been there before but you have a general idea where it is located. This will work. Finding the Lost City of Atlantis will not.

Harry snorted at that, rather amused to discover that whoever Magic is, has a sense of humor if these boxes are anything to go by. He knew the interface had told him he was Magic’s Champion, but he wasn’t sure what that meant and his aunt and uncle had told him that magic did not exist. He was not sure what this was. Maybe he was going crazy after spending so much time in the cupboard. At least he wasn’t bored. Moving to the next one a thumbtack and it said this is a way for you to track your current quest. When you choose to pin a quest, it will stay at the top of the list and show up at the side of your view without having to open the quest menu. You can switch this at any time without harming your progress. Keep an eye on your Jobs and Quests as some will have a time limit and if the time runs out, you will lose the quest and it may hurt your reputation with that party or giver of the quest. Harry nodded that all made sense and he guessed the last one was if he had questions or was having problems. The description confirmed his guess.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

Done with the quest page other than to pin the quest he closed the screen and thought Status. Harry was a little overwhelmed with all the information.

‘So much information,’ Harry’s head felt like it was going to explode. Although he was glad to see that as he worked his way through the descriptions condensed into a little book tab in case, he needed the information again. He was sure he managed to figure it out, although some of those titles and debuffs and shocked and pissed him off. He hoped there was a way for him to sit down and plan what to do next later as it was late and he needed to get up early to make breakfast as usual. ‘I’m going to have to touch back those debuffs before finishing the tutorial,’ Harry rubbed his forehead and closed the window, deciding to just move on.

[Objective complete!]

‘Ok, then that would make inventory next. Inventory,’ Harry said proceed to the next objective on the list. A screen opened with 2 sides on the left there was a picture of a person with lines leading to open boxes. Some of the boxes had images in them. Dudley’s Old Shirt said it was a worn shirt that offered no protection. Poor quality. So that was the chest piece and below that is the pants which said the same thing just pants. The last piece was his glasses called Bargain Eyeglasses offers little aid improving vision as these are not prescription and are just reading glasses. Broken quality. An arrow was point to a box at the bottom with a picture of a suit of armor. Harry focused on it and the picture changed to all empty box except for the same glasses as the other page. ‘Well at least you can have something set to be equipped to both,’ Clicking the casual button on the left to go back. He nodded, ‘this will be useful switching between outfits. Let’s check out the inventory on the other side, maybe I can set preset outfits to equip quick.’ Looking to the right he was happy to see tabs. His main inventory had 15 slots and was empty. There were symbols at the bottom that he discovered were for money as there was pounds and pence, however he did not recognize the G, S, and K symbols. He moved to the closet tab, which he was happy to see had 5 slots, and an armor/combat tab with 5 slots as well. There was an information box at the top of each describing the function of each and was mostly self-explanatory and it was nice to know he could place weapons in the armor/combat tab. ‘Ooh, so I can purchase expanded space for my inventory. That’s cool. Well, that should do it for Inventory.’ Exiting that one and moving on to Knowledge.

[Objective complete!]

Before he could see much other than some tabs another box showed up in front of the Knowledge screen.

[Everything you know appears in your knowledge screen. You have a school tab for your notes and homework, your journal that holds whatever you want; self-study, personal notes, plans, and ideas, etc., skills are whatever skills you possess and their level of mastery, and the spell page is the same but with spells you have learned. Lastly there is the Album tab for pictures you have taken. I have taken the liberty of filling this tab with pictures from prior to this point including before arriving at the Dursleys.]

Harry’s eyes widened in shock and tears started to fill his eyes. With a shaky breath he thought, ‘Album.’ The new tab opened up with pictures of him. They weren’t that great in his opinion because of the Dursleys. He was always alone. The only thing amazing about them was he was moving in them. “What’s going on with these pictures,” Harry asked the System.

[These are magical photographs. Magical photographs capture a moment in time and the people in the photos can move in a loop of the event.]

This was so amazing. He continued through the pictures until he came to a series of pictures involving events and people, he had no memory of. The system was kind enough to put descriptions at the bottom of the pictures as well as the time and date. There was a picture of a young girl with long dark red hair on a swing set caught in a moment of jumping and floating gently to the ground. Another of her with a skinny dark-haired boy. Lily Marie Evans the summer of 1967, was written beneath the pictures.

Another of 4 boys although one sidled out of frame as soon as he looked at it. There was a boy in the center who looked a lot like him with a second dark-haired boy on the right and a sandy brown-haired boy on the left. A dumpy blond-haired boy scooted out of the frame from the left. The ones left in the frame were good looking boys. The description below said from left to right Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin, James Potter, and Sirius Black Hogwarts in the Fall of 1973. There were so many pictures of all of them. Then Harry found the wedding, baby, and holiday photos.

Harry could no longer see the pictures through his tears. They loved him. He could see it in the photos. How happy they were. He, Harry, had been loved. He scrunched up into a ball, wrapped his arms around himself, and cried into his legs. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Harry sobbed out.
