1- Ern

A lonely wind softly blew through the air as the trees and animals shuffled in the background. The night sky shone brightly, and in accordance with the moon's blue, illuminating a nearby stream. 

Ern sat down next to the stream, an expectant glow in his eyes. The ruffling of papers was lightly heard, mostly covered by the nature around him. 

The sound of frogs croaking filled the air, and the quiet wind, together with the sky's shine, brought attention to the black cat prowling behind a tree, cautioned, having caught its nightly meal. Somewhere an Owl hooed, and once again the land went quiet.

A few moments later, a strong gust of wind snatched the piece of parchment out of his hand. 

Master Ern, 

We are sorry to inform you that you have not fulfilled the requirements that are necessary to attend Alderp's School of Magic. Test scores follow on the back of this paper. We strongly urge you to continue in your studies so that you may be a part of our family soon!

In a world of the accepted or scorned, monsters and spirits. What will decide a person's future is his innate ability to use magic and stand out from the rest of the crowd. Accepted, if one is blessed enough. Scorned, if one were to receive nothing.

Ern hoped to be like his father, recognized for his great accomplishments and his prowess in both magic and combat. However, his final chance ended in nothing but failure. 

Destiny...is it real?

The question remained.

A thick, somber air clouded the sky, and a drop of water disturbed the steady stream. The black sky had been replaced with the gravel-grey army of clouds, waiting to assault the beings underneath. The flood gates of the sky had been opened; the splashing of rain became the most prominent sound.

Ern's tears were camouflaged by the trickling of the rain. 

"I've failed again— this last time..." His voice resounded through the forest. 

The organic smell of the earth dissipated into the sky, accepting the rain. 

The boy stood up, with all his energy, surprising the great beings of the sky, and speeding the pitter-patter of the rain. Steeling himself, he sloshed through the mud and grime of the earth, taking heavy but steady steps forward.

His face grimaced... "I'll show them!"

The words were swept by nature's wind to the ears of anyone who was listening...
