Chapter 17

The dawn broke, casting a faint glow through the windows of the fire station. As the light filtered into the room, I stirred from my restless sleep, my mind still burdened by thoughts of the choices that lay before me. It was a new day, and with it came the urgency to prepare for the challenges that awaited us.

I rose from my makeshift bed and stretched my weary muscles.

The fire station was already abuzz with activity. The survivors moved about with purpose, tending to their tasks and fortifying our defenses. Black Star, wearing a disheveled appearance, stood at a table, fiddling around with a HAM radio.

I made my way towards the center of the room, where Twilight Aster lay, still unconscious. Jennifer was diligently attending to her, her expertise as a nurse and a caregiver evident in her every action. Her face reflected a mix of concern and determination, refusing to give in to despair.

A woman in her late 20s to early 30s, she stood tall among the survivors in the fire station. She carried herself with a sense of calm and authority that spoke of her strength and resilience. Her dark, wavy hair cascaded down her shoulders, framing a face with warm, almond-shaped eyes that held both wisdom and determination. Her complexion was a rich, deep brown, and her features were a blend of delicate curves and strong angles, reflecting an ambiguous heritage.

"How is she?" I asked, my voice filled with a mix of worry and hope.

Jennifer turned to face me, her eyes weary but determined. "She's stable, but her injuries are severe. We've done what we can for now, but she needs proper medical attention. We need antibiotics and disinfectants for her, at the very least."

I nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. Our resources were limited, and finding medical aid in the midst of the chaos outside would be a daunting task. We couldn't afford to waste any time.

"Have we heard anything from outside?" I asked, hoping against hope that help was on its way.

Black Star responded with a shake of his head, before responding with a solemn tone. "No sign of any organized rescue effort yet. Communication lines went down, and it seems like everything’s gone to hell outside. I’ve been trying to get in contact with other survivors over short range radio.”

His words weighed heavily on my heart. The realization that we were on our own, at least for the time being, settled over me like a heavy blanket.

We needed to rely on ourselves and our ingenuity to survive. I looked around at the group of survivors, each one carrying their own burdens and fears. Some wore expressions of determination, while others displayed worry and uncertainty. But in their eyes, I also saw a glimmer of hope, a resilience that refused to be extinguished.

I approached Jennifer, who was still tending to Twilight Aster, and gently asked, "Is there any chance she'll wake up soon?"

Jennifer sighed, her eyes filled with concern. "It… it's hard to say. Her injuries were severe, and she's been through a lot. It might take some time for her to regain consciousness. But I'll do everything I can to help her recover."

I nodded, understanding the uncertainty of the situation. We couldn't rely solely on Twilight Aster's guidance, at least not for the time being. We had to make decisions and take action to ensure our survival.

I found myself approaching Black Star once again. He seemed to have a grasp on the situation, his mind constantly working, analyzing, and adapting. Hopefully I could gain some insight into our next steps.

He turned to face me, his eyes assessing and thoughtful. "We need to gather more information about the situation outside. Our best chance is to find a way to scout the area and assess the level of threat we're facing. We can't stay holed up in this fire station forever."

His words resonated with me. We needed to be proactive, to take control of our circumstances rather than passively waiting for help. If there was any chance of finding answers and solutions, we had to be willing to venture out into the unknown.

"I agree," I replied, determination coursing through my veins. "Umn. I did have a question about the [System] and leveling. Do you happen to know if improving my physical attributes with skill points would hamper any natural growth?

Black Star grinned mischievously, his playful nature shining through. "Hah, Sienna, you worry too much. Putting skill points into attributes won't hamper your natural growth. Think of it this way, they're added supernaturally on top of whatever strength, agility, constitution, and all that jazz you can gather naturally. It's like getting a magical boost without sacrificing your baseline development. A lift to your genetic ceiling, even.”

His words lifted a weight off my shoulders, and a sense of relief washed over me. I had been concerned about the consequences of allocating points into my attributes. But Black Star's reassurance gave me the confidence to explore my options without fear of hindering my overall growth.

"Thanks, Black Star," I said with a grateful smile. "I appreciate the advice. I guess it's time to make a call."

I reopened the interface, studying the options before me with renewed focus:

The choices remained the same, their allure and uncertainty beckoning to me once more. But now, with the weight of responsibility upon me, I felt a newfound clarity.

I couldn't rely solely on increasing my own power. Our survival depended on working together, on utilizing the skills and abilities of each individual. It was a daunting task, but we had to become a formidable force against the darkness that threatened to consume us.

I wanted to ask Twilight Aster for advice, to gain insight from her experience as a seasoned Magical Knight. But she was still unconscious, and her current condition made it impossible to seek her guidance.

However, Black Star's words lingered in my mind. This was my story, my journey as a Magical Girl. I had to trust in my instincts and make choices based on the information I had. There was no time to waste, and I needed to take action to protect myself and the others.

I made my decision, the path forward becoming clear in my mind.

‘I choose to learn a new skill: Intuition’

As I confirmed my decision, a surge of energy coursed through my body, a palpable shift in the air around me. I could feel the magic within me responding to my choice, embracing the path of intuition.

A warm glow enveloped me momentarily before dissipating, leaving me with a heightened sense of awareness. I didn’t really feel all that different, but I assumed it would rear its head when I needed it.

Frowning, I turned my gaze to the attributes panel. The events of the past few days had made it clear that I needed to strengthen my physical capabilities to endure the trials ahead. I allocated three skill points to increase my Constitution by two points, aiming to improve my endurance and resilience. Running around had left me constantly winded and fatigued, and I was cutting it far too close for comfort.

Next, I focused on my magical abilities. The battles I had faced thus far had drained my MP quickly, leaving me vulnerable. Recognizing the need for greater magical energy, I allocated two skill points to increase my MP pool and regeneration. With a larger reservoir of power and a faster recovery rate, I hoped to sustain my abilities for longer periods, ensuring I could face whatever challenges lay in our path.

That left me with thirteen points to allocate, and I deliberated on how best to use them. The upgrades to my existing skills were tempting, offering the potential to increase my combat capabilities as well as my utility. On the other hand, there were new skills to consider.

With so many options before me, I found myself torn between upgrading what I already had and exploring new avenues of power. Each choice came with its own risks and rewards, and I needed to weigh them carefully.

I ruled out Luminary Nova right away, as I didn’t feel like I needed a wide area effect ability that could potentially harm my allies. Presence Amplification seemed interesting, allowing me to enhance the effects of my aura and potentially influence others, but I wasn't sure how effective it would be in practice.

Resilience caught my eye once again. The chaotic and dangerous world we now lived in demanded a level of resilience beyond the physical. This skill could potentially enhance my mental and emotional fortitude, allowing me to better withstand the hardships and horrors we would undoubtedly face. It was another gamble like [Intuition], but I allocated nine skill points to learn Resilience, hoping that it would grant me the inner strength needed to face the challenges ahead.

[You have chosen to learn the passive skill: Resilience]

That left me with four points.

With my choices made and my skill points allocated, I felt a sense of satisfaction and purpose.

I closed the interface and took a deep breath, ready to face the day ahead. The weight of responsibility settled on my shoulders, but I knew I couldn't let it consume me. We had a fort to protect, wounds to tend to, and a world to navigate in search of answers.

I made my way back to Jennifer and Twilight Aster, grateful for Jennifer's dedication to the injured Magical Knight. "Jennifer, thank you… thank for everything you're doing," I said sincerely.

Jennifer smiled tiredly. "I'll do my best, Sienna. We're in this together, after all." She paused, her eyes filled with concern. "But I'm concerned about her. She developed a fever overnight, and it's worrying. If we don't find a way to get her proper medical care soon, her condition could worsen."

I frowned, the worry creeping back into my mind. "Is there anything we can do? Any other options?"

Jennifer sighed, her gaze shifting towards the boarded-up windows, before shaking her head. "It’s too dangerous to venture outside at the moment. The monsters are still roaming the streets, and we don't have the supplies or manpower to ensure a safe journey to a medical facility. Our best chance is to hold out here until help arrives or the situation outside improves."

I bit my lower lip as a sense of frustration washed over me. Twilight Aster's condition was deteriorating, and we were helpless to provide the care she needed. I couldn't sit idly by, hoping for the best while her health continued to decline.

"Maybe... maybe I can try," I said, my voice filled with determination. "I can go out and look for medical supplies. There must be something nearby that we can use to help her."

Jennifer's eyes widened in concern, and she shook her head. "Sienna, it's too dangerous. The monsters are out there, and we can't risk losing you too."

"But if we don't do something, she could die," I pleaded. "I can't just stand by and watch that happen."

Black Star, who had been listening to our conversation, chimed in. "I hate to say it, but she's got a point, Jennifer. We can't afford to lose Twilight Aster. Sienna has a [Talent] that lets her negate that blue energy if she gets to a victim quickly enough. That's why I decided to stick with her.”

I gave Black Star a side-eye, before turning to him with a snort. “Really? That’s why you decided to stick with me? Because of my [Luminary Conversion]?"

"Hey, it's purely a matter of practicality," he replied, a smirk playing on his lips. "If it makes you feel better, it’s as much because of your charm and personality. But that little blue energy trick of yours is pretty damn useful too.”

Jennifer watched our exchange with a mix of concern and amusement, her eyes softening. "Sienna, I understand your determination, but I can't let you go out there alone. It's too dangerous."

"I won't be alone," I replied, my voice firm. "Henry will accompany me. Besides, we can't just sit here and hope for the best. We need to take action."

Black Star raised an eyebrow, a hint of skepticism in his expression. "You're really asking me to go out there? Do you have any idea what we're up against?"

I met his gaze, my own eyes filled with a mix of determination and a touch of defiance. "I know it won't be easy, but we have to try. Twilight Aster's life is at stake."

Black Star's playful smirk faded, replaced by a more serious expression. He understood the gravity of the situation, and I could see the gears turning in his mind as he weighed the risks against the potential rewards.

"What’s in it for me?" he finally said.

Black Star's question caught me off guard, his flippant and self-serving nature shining through even in this dire situation. A part of me felt a twinge of annoyance at his attitude, but I knew better than to expect anything less from him.

I took a moment to collect my thoughts, trying to find the right words to appeal to his pragmatic nature. "Look, I know you're not the selfless hero type. But think about it this way. If we can find the necessary supplies and save Twilight Aster, we'll not only be helping her but also increasing our chances of survival. She's a seasoned Magical Knight, and her experience and skills could be invaluable to us in this fight. Plus, we have a better chance of getting out of this mess if we work together."

Black Star's smirk faded slightly, replaced by a pensive expression. It was clear that my words had struck a chord with him, even if he was trying to play it cool. He was a survivor, like the rest of us, and deep down, he understood the importance of unity and cooperation.

"We'll go with you two," a baritone voice spoke from the side. "We've faced danger every day, and if there's a chance to save Twilight Aster, I'm not going to let it slip away."

Danny and two other firefighters stepped forward, stepping into our conversation. The three of them were dressed up in full protected, modified equipment.

The other two firefighters nodded in agreement, their expressions reflecting a mix of concern and resolve.

Black Star's sardonic smirk returned, though there was a glimmer of respect in his eyes. "Oh look, the red shirts are here," he said with a shrug. "I'm in. But don't expect any heroics from me. I'm just doing this for the sake of self-preservation. To be frank, if we see anything like that giant muscular juggernaut or antelope, I’m out."

I couldn't help but roll my eyes at his response while Danny chuckled morbidly, but I was grateful that he had agreed to accompany us. Having someone with his experience and combat skills by our side would undoubtedly improve our chances of success.

“Can you write down what we should keep an eye out for, Jennifer?” Danny asked.

Jennifer nodded, understanding the urgency of the situation. She quickly grabbed a notepad and pen, jotting down a list of medical supplies and their descriptions. As she wrote, she spoke aloud to ensure we all understood.

"Alright, here's what we need to prioritize: antibiotics, antiseptics, bandages, and painkillers. There’s a Danny Reed on West 7th street nearby. Check for any signs of recent activity or other survivors if possible. And remember, safety first. If the situation seems too dangerous, retreat and regroup. Don't take unnecessary risks."

She handed me the notepad, the list of supplies neatly written on the page. I took a moment to read through it, committing the information to memory. Each item was crucial for Twilight Aster's recovery, and failure to acquire them could have dire consequences.

"Thank you, Jennifer," I said, gratitude evident in my voice. "We'll do our best to find what we need and return as quickly as possible."

Jennifer nodded, her eyes filled with concern. "Please be careful, Sienna. And look out for each other. I'll keep an eye on Twilight Aster and do what I can to stabilize her condition until you return."

I gave her an affirmative bow, before turning to Black Star. "Thank you, Black Star. I know I’m cramping your style, but I think we can make a difference together."

He rolled his eyes playfully. "Yeah, yeah, don't get all mushy on me. Let's just get going before I change my mind."

Jennifer sighed, her expression torn between worry and understanding. "Promise me that you'll prioritize your safety. If things get too dangerous, don't hesitate to retreat. Twilight Aster wouldn't want you risking your lives for her."

With our resolve firmly set, the five of us gathered our supplies and prepared to venture out into the unknown. I took one last look at Twilight Aster as she lay on the makeshift bed, vulnerable and in need of help. Despite her unconscious state, there was a quiet strength that radiated from her, a reminder of the power she possessed and the hope she represented.

I found myself drawn to Twilight Aster's side once again, watching as her chest rose and fell with each shallow breath. I reached out, placing my hand on the girl's arm, hoping to offer some form of comfort.

"I promise you, Twilight Aster," I whispered softly. "We won't let you down."

I whispered a silent prayer for her recovery, hoping that we would be able to fulfill our quest to save her. Her fate and the fate of Ladder 37 rested in our hands.

As we stepped outside, I couldn't help but take one last look at the fire station, our temporary sanctuary. It stood as a symbol of our vulnerability, a fragile refuge amidst chaos. But it was also a reminder of the hope that burned within us, a beacon of resilience and determination.

I turned away from the fire station, my gaze fixed on the path ahead. It was time for a simple mission. Search for the supplies we needed to save Twilight Aster, and come back alive.

No pressure, Sienna.
