Chapter 4: Heaven-Borns.

Chapter 4: Heaven-Borns.

Town of Artes, near the tavern. 26th day of February 1467 AD.

...

"Aval... What is a Heaven-Born?" I asked with curiosity, I flushed because of his hand on my shoulder. But I suppressed that awkward smile on my face instantly. How the hell could I act like a shy woman?! I am a man, for fuck sake!

He was still ecstatic, so he kept laughing for a while before calming down. Being a Heaven-Born surely meant something good. But when I look back to it now, it wasn't that big of a deal. Aval looked at me with a lively smile and explained to me.

"A Heaven-Born is someone that was born with the power to wield magic, but it is different from mages. Heaven-Borns can only use their innate magic, any other magic needs to be learned through ordinary means. And not every heaven-born has an immediately useful magic, some can only evoke fire from their fingers, and only to the size of a candle. Others can immediately imbue freezing ice on a sword and kill everyone he touches. It is a power that is engraved on their spirit, and it grows along with it. I am a heaven-born myself, one of the Slayer-class at that."He said with a proud smile on his face. But then his smile instantly disappeared, his expression became somber and it seemed he had remembered something bad.

"What's the matter?" I asked worriedly.

"Nothing... Just bad memories. You see, some powers are volatile and can't be controlled easily, others are hard to even notice. That is why the Heaven-Born has to train their spirit and not only achieve better control over their powers, but also make their powers stronger."Aval said with a gloomy face.

"How can you know I am a heaven-born?" I pushed him for more information, as everything was still too vague.

"Heaven-Born have two things in common. They can sense aura and they have better senses than normal people, as well as instincts. These differences become bigger when a Heaven-Born gets to a higher stage." Aval was explaining carefully, it looked like he was used to teaching people.

"What stages?"

"There are three stages of power for a Heaven-Born. The first stage is Spirit Awakening, where he unlocks his powers and become a true Heaven-Born. Both senses and ability are crude and unrefined that way, sometimes even being dangerous. At that stage, their powers are limited to their own body or touch range. The second stage is Form Coalescing, When you can sense things with instinct and not really need only your five senses that much. You also become able to detach your power from your body, and they become stronger as well as more practical. The third form is the most powerful, the Complete Possession. You become able to materialize your spirit in a way that it covers your body, it not only enhances your body to a certain extent but also makes your abilities more versatile and powerful, to the point that even if you have a weak ability, you will be equal in power to the lowest level mage!" Aval was excited as he spoke about the prospect of a third class. It may sound dumb when it is compared to the lowest level mage, but the lowest level mage can kill fifty people with a few spells! If a normal person tried to kill fifty humans it would take much stamina and agility, even if they were unarmed! The power to do such thing is unthinkable for normal people, but it is reachable for a Heaven-Born!

"But how can a heaven-born achieve higher stages? And how can I discover what my power is?"

"No one knows, usually getting to a higher stage happens after a harsh battle or during a moment of enlightenment. As for discovering your power... you can only discover by yourself... ever noticed anything weird?"Aval had a helpless look as he said that.

I was in deep thought as I tried to remember previous things that happened, and I suddenly remembered something that happened long ago.

I was walking through the alleys when suddenly I heard a voice. It was the voice of a thief that was planning on robbing me, but it was incredibly loud. I could escape that thief because of that. It also happened when I heard my boss speaking bad things about him especially loudly.

I then extended my arm and grabbed Aval's shoulder.

I instantly heard a voice.

"""Why is he touching me? Is he trying his power?"""

I then thought.

"""I think I can read minds..."""

Unexpectedly, Aval heard me. Even though my lips hadn't moved. His face changed, and then he shook his head,

"It isn't an attacking power, so you can't become a Slayer-class, at least for now. People like you are called, Support-class. You should train your power more, then it may have more effects."He said as he comforted me.

I became downcast as I heard that. Who knew that I had such bad luck.

"Okay. No need to get sad. It is Dark already, let's go to the camp. I want to introduce you to some people.”

I nodded and then went followed him towards the camp.

...

We traveled to the outside of the town, a few miles away from it actually. I was excited to meet his company, but soon my happiness disappeared...

It was the first time I saw that woman... the one that would make the disgust in my heart grow to an extent I never imagined.
