Meeting A Mishap

“He was practicing medicine, of course, he was a healer!” Zayara squealed in excitement.

Her friends were laughing. “Then how come we have never heard of this…Tiny-Mox?” Joraci mocked.

“It is called “Smallpox” and it is being spread all over his tribe”.

“Then maybe this is something his tribe should be worried about”, Iracema pointed out.

“Hey, you three! Some men are coming! And one of them is white!” Akiwa called out, panting and running to a nearby bottle of water.

Zayara froze in shock, she looked like she was going to pass out. This is impossible! He should’ve left with a copy of the book! Did he figure out it was a copy? Was he tracking me? What will he do when he finds me?

“Za? You okay?” Iracema said as she waved her hand at her friend’s face.

“Iracema, this is bad! The white man I told you about, he is tracking me!”

“But you left a copy of the book, right? There is no way he would figure out it was a copy”, her friend reassured.

“Still he cannot find out I am here!”

Then one villager announced that the men were already there. Zayara wished that this was a nightmare. She rushed to her hut, maybe they would just be visiting so as long as she remained inside then there wouldn’t be any trouble.

“Zayara! Prepare to offer our visitors some goiaba* to show hospitality”, her mother ordered.

*goiaba means guava

The men came and they spoke in the tribe’s language. The Chief laughed after the visitors whispered something in his ear. The men were then welcomed into the tribe. Everyone kept staring at the white man with them. The clothes he was wearing and his eye color was very unique.

Kirk was relieved to have found a village nearby. He hoped that studying the new civilization’s culture would distract him from that short wild adventure he had of chasing a young woman. He wondered if she was a spy from a nearby tribe. Was that why she was rummaging around his belongings? He didn’t tell his escort about that. He would have to figure it out on his own. One thing he knew was that the girl was from a tribe not far from their camp. One of the other men reported that there was smoke nearby.

It was smart to go with friends from his mother's tribe. They could easily gain the trust of natives in America and southern areas. They already visited El Dorado, and the visit was fantastic. Then a few tribes in the south. Kirk had a feeling that they were heading out of the new land. It must be a new continent. He wrote down everything he discovered so far.

Then they finally arrived in the village. The people stared in a suspicious gaze. Kirk felt like they were all staring at him specifically. A man walked up to them. He was dressed in more detail than everyone else.

This must be the village chief.

He spoke in his native tongue: What brings you here travelers?

One of Kirk’s escorts explained then whispered something into his ear. The chief started laughing then welcomed them in. Kirk noticed the entire village staring at him. He understood why, he stood out as being the only white man in this area. And the only one who wasn’t wearing revealing clothes. Thank God this land wasn’t conquered by the British. He was welcomed and went into the chief’s hut. There the chief was sitting on a straw mat with his advisor and shaman.

“So, what brings you to this land white man?” The chief asked in fluent English. Kirk was surprised by this. His eyes widened in shock.

“How are you speaking English?” He blurted.

“My shaman Caubi taught my people the language, he is from a land where people already knew all the languages you speak”, the chief explained as he gestured at the man next to him. Kirk grew suspicious.

“May I ask some questions?” Kirk asked after eyeing the shaman. The chief nodded. “What do you and your people usually eat?”

“I will show you when we have our celebration”.

“Oh…” Kirk sounded disappointed.

“But if you want to know other kinds of information…” Caubi spoke up. “My daughter would be more than happy to guide you”.

Zayara made sure to hide under a blanket in her hut. Then an older woman came in and called for her.

“Yes Potyra?” Zayara groaned. She still stayed hidden in the blanket. Potyra walked up to the younger woman and shook her. She groaned even louder in annoyance.

“Za! Your father is calling you”.

Zayara sat up and grumbled. And as she walked all the way to the chief’s hut, she quickly grabbed a plate and used it to hide her face.

“Kirk Langstrom, I hope you will enjoy your visit here, my daughter Zayara will give you a tour”.

Kirk Langstrom? What a ridiculous name! Okay just avoid eye contact and you can quickly sneak out the hut.

She bent down and walked up to the white man. Offering him the meal. The man seemed to have hesitated.

Is he hesitating? Just take the offering!

“Is there a problem, Kirk Langstrom?”

“YOU!” Kirk exclaimed.

Oh shit. She cursed as she looked up. The man was surprised but calmed down. He then cleared his throat. “Chief, I recognize this woman. We met by the river”.

Crap.
